Sam’s gas can says “It’s gonna be okay” with a tissue box on it So here’s the thing, if they hadn’t revivified Orym or Fearne, I think they would have stayed dead. Laudna will absolutely be resurrected by the party. Probably in the next 10 sessions, definitely before the endgame of this campaign. Imogen will make sure of that. Overall, I see this episode as a win. Can’t wait for Marisha’s temp character to flirt with Imogen. Any moments I missed? Feel free to post them here. Is it Thursday yet?
Spoiler for campaign 2 episode 129: that almost has the same energy as the: Matt: "As the battle is complete Luc, Veth's son, is dead." Commercial break: "PUUSHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!" That was burned into my memory in the worst commercial break ever xD
I don’t usually cry in these episodes but the “can you please come back? Because I’m getting a little scared” literally broke me 😭 Ashley just gut punched me
02:56:50 as fucking sad as this episode was. Travis was really giving me full on belly laughs throughout it too 😂 This has been a real roller coaster of emotions
That phrase broke open things in me I didn't even know I was locking up, it broke me open. That and the "no you are not putting her in that hole" unlocked such a tsunami of emotions and memories that I was so glad I was picking up my 14 year old daughter right then because it pulled me out of a torrent of past experiences 💔
Everyone will point out performance of Marisha, Laura and Liam and rightfully so, but for me Ashley was a standout. The way she shedded off Fearne any layers of confidence she put around herself and showed a scared little girl living at her core was exquisite.
I respectfully disagree. She seemed too worried about what Ashley would do and didn’t want to upset anyone irl. For me it removed immersion. She just seemed flustered and took 5 min in game to get off a spell that only had 30 seconds to happen. It robbed the moment of urgency and impact. Imo.
@@BigBunky yeah, I probably would have said "Orym's got 30 seconds left, a decision needs to be made" if I were in Matt's shoes. But heck, it isn't our table
@@tatersalad76 i think its because matt has a tendency to be somewhat lenient to moments like these. If it was my dm or others with the same mindset? Ashley definitely wouldn't have the luxury of properly think about it
@@BigBunky i was very surprised to see her hesitate, it seemed obvious to me that Fearne would choose Orym. So i have the impression that it was Ashley hesitating instead of Fearne.
In an ironic twist of fate Laudna and Imogen leave Bassurus the way they entered it. Separate and apart from each other. They entered with the rift of the broken rock and Imogen feeling lied to separating them, but now they leave with death keeping them apart. It really makes what Ashton told Imogen about Bassurus that much more poignant. Imogen: What made you leave (Bassuras)? Ashton: You’ll know when we get there. It’s not a good place for people. It’s not a good place for anything.
Ashley's voice when she says "Can you please come back? Because i'm getting a little scared" literally brought tears to my eyes. Felt like a child was saying it.
It's times like these that you realize all acting is, is putting yourself in the characters shoes. They aren't acting they are living! I love it. Heart wrenching but I love it.
I was riding the emotional roller-coaster at that time and was caught so off guard I nearly laughed at that. It was the," don't you dare put her in that hole", that once again had me welling up with tears. I've heard that screemed out by people or children, and even wanted to myself, particularly when a child or adult is dealing with their first death or an unexpected death of a family member, friend, or pet. That 1 line welled up so many memories and emotions that went with them inside of me from myself and other people I have helped that I'm just glad I was picking up my daughter at the time because it was too much. She managed to just pull me right back out of that near mental and emotional spiral of unexpected memories and emotions. I learned today that that phrase is cryptonite to me. I'm writing this hours later when I got back to this and and just writing that phrase down and talking about this is enough to nearly make the flood spill over again. She did a very good job of conveying with her voice the amount of pain, anguish, and distress that often goes with somebody screaming that phrase and yet she didn't overdo it but my mind can never forget what it truly sounds like.
I had somehow, up until that point, been completely dry-eyed. But Fearne’s constant repetition of “I don’t know what to do”, that little wobble in her voice when she says she’s scared, oh man. That broke me. Incredible acting this episode. I don’t think I’ve ever been this distressed about a PC death since campaign 1…
@@lyssatiny102 I know that this is acting and they are all just playing a game, but I trully felt like somehow, it wasn't Fearne, but ashley actually speaking. Somehow it felt "personal" as I heard it. I guess that speaks volumes on her acting chops.
I don’t get why everyone was mad. That was so annoying to watch everyone screaming about how they didn’t want to choose but no one was willing to vote or contribute any thing to decide.
@@TheOneNotTheOnly It's the fact that they were grieving their fallen friends, could only bring back one, and it was gonna feel hella shitty no matter which choice they made. The average person doesn't exactly wake up every morning eager to make that kind of choice. Great power, responsibility, and all that.
Marisha just slowly starting to gather her things at 1:10:00, and then at 1:10:47 catching Matt's eye and mouthing "Do I go?" and Matt's slow, solemn nod after thinking for a second I'M BROKEN. I AM BROKEN INTO PIECES
I don't think she's asking, "Do I go?" Instead, she's saying, "I'm going." She clearly waited until they were out of Liam's moment to gather her things and was just letting the DM know she was leaving the table. Marisha's too smart a player not to know that there was a 50% that her character wasn't going to survive the beginning of the episode even if the group didn't talk about what they would do in this eventuality (which I'm sure they did-any D&D table would between sessions). In D&D games, characters die. In some ways, I hope that Laudna doesn't come back because that could serve to model that point for those who look at CR for ideas of how to play D&D. The character died, player rolls up a new character, the player and the DM fit that character into the story, and the player returns to the table where their friends welcome them and their new character starts the process of joining the group.
I mean the cast have that many heart to hearts that this really isn’t that much of surprise. If they spent a little more time concentrating on the task at hand, and devising plans rather than pushing narrative and character development at every opportunity, Laudna might still be alive.
I have a theory that Fearne would have choosen Orym either way, it was a great choice for Ashley to keep the result of the coin flip a secret. It would be so chilling to have Fearne confess episodes later, in a quiet moment with Orym, that the coin actually landed on Laudna.
i think she hid the result because either way she wanted the dramatic pause to make you think she was going to save one and then say they'd "come back for them"
Oh not even a question. I mean if Imogen had been in charge of choosing she’d have chosen Laudna over everyone else, so there’s no reason Fearne should be any different. Really there shouldn’t have even been a coin flip except for the fact poor Ashley was (understandably) panicking out of game and needed something to help her focus.
For all the talk of how Chetney was Travis' attempt at making a character that his wife would never want to date, it seems like Chetney is turning out to be the most amusing of all of Travis' characters for Laura. He gets so many laughs out of her with just the smallest things, it's very wholesome.
Ashley's delivery of "Can you please come back? Because i'm getting a little scared", the entire scene was brilliant in how scared and innocent it was. It had that innocence of a child pleading for a lost friend to come back. Fearne thinks she is 120 years or more, that time she spent with Morrigan. Fearne's parents think it wasn't only several years since they saw their child. What if Fearne is a child in some ways, maybe emotional maturity or experience, but an adult in body and mind otherwise? Morrigan extracted the debt for safekeeping young Fearne and stretched their time together. That would explain Fearne's chaotic toddler energy pocketing all sorts of trinkets.
It seems to me like she did actually live for 120ish years with Morrigan, despite her parents only giving her up like 6-7 years ago. I think her personality is partly just her own chaotic nature, but also a bit of just childish nature from being raised by a grandma figure that seemingly encouraged her to continue being playful and childish, like when she 1st got her. So it seems like while she knows about things that a 120-yr-old might know and is flirty and stuff, she also has quite an innocence to her, as if she was a sheltered child who hasn't seen too many serious things. Which only makes the line hit even harder
1:03:30 I didn't notice this the first time but watch Liam and Marisha. Liam whispers to her "I love you," to which she whispers back "I love you." Both of them exchange hearts and reach out to touch one another but don't. In C1 it was Keyleth (Marisha) saying goodbye to Vax (Liam). Now it's the other way around. To quote Keyleth from C1, "I'm not ready..."
Liam's face also says SO MUCH in that moment. And this was one of the things in this episode that broke me - when my dear friend Matthew died, I was there. And when I look at Matt, I sometimes see a bit of my Matthew in his face (something about the cheekbones and the mouth). So when he said that, it just HURT all over again because I know EXACTLY what he means, and he reminds me so much of the friend I lost.
@@samuraiko Liam said something about thinking back to 6 years ago and how much there is to do when someone dies. 6 years ago IRL is when his mother passed away.
I worked 8 fatalities in the last couple years (EMR first responder), 5 of whom were people I were close too. Yeah, watching someone you care about pass on in a violent way is a very distinct experience. My sympathies to anyone else who understands that experience.
It's true. Back in 2011, I had to disconnect my dad from life support. I stayed the entire time until the end. I would never wish that on anyone, but, you do know.
The fore-shadowing of Laudna having told Ashton that sometimes she feels like it doesn't fucking matter no matter how hard she tries to reclaim her life, and evil-FCG telling Laudna she was never alive, literally earlier in that same day.
And Delilah telling her that her friends will betray her .... laudna will come back different when ressurected because having been said all those horrible stuff, that does things too oneself at an emotional level... I just know it and there will be drama, intense tension for sure.
Ashton's "call Jiana Hexum. Tell her I'll do whatever she wants" broke the hell out of me. This is the moment we realize everyone's mask drops when lives are on the line and I didn't think Ashton's desperate need to fix Laudna nor Fearne's terror at having to choose who to save would have hit me that hard.
I feel like some of us forget, and some of us don't know. As a kid, you look at a deal with the devil and go "That's so stupid, I'd never do that!" It's only once you find yourself in or watching the right situation, that you realize no. You wouldn't do it for *you*.
And then Imogen just disregarding the idea confused me. Ashton was trying to get Laudna back so you think Imogen would realize. Then Ashton didn't make it better by going to do something else and not explaining what was said.
@@Zale__ maybe she was preserving spell slots? also, they were all emotional and impulsive since the clock is ticking for revivify to work. everyone was in a panic. so was I. Goddamn this episode was intense!!
@@Zale__ Imogen understandably wouldn't understand though. Jianna Hexxum isn't an all-powerful being to her whilst to Ashton, she kind of is (as she's manipulated him to be that way).
Marisha is an absolutely incredible cast member, rp-er, player, friend, and listener. Not once did she get mad at anyone for what happened. A truly respectable and admirable person. All the love to her!! I can’t wait to get her back soon.
Why would she get mad? She's the only character to have any reasonable expectation to cheat death outside of resurrection, and also the most likely to have death directly trigger character development. It's all but confirmed with the Gentle Repose shenanigans.
I mean she belittles all the men she comes across for no reason and never mentions and good things with the fathers of her characters so she’s more of a manipulator. Also a good player? Clearly you’re forgetting when she turned herself into a goldfish instead of any other creature that can fly. She continuely forgot her monk can learn about her enemies when she punches them. She also forgot strength of the grave ability is a CHA save not a CON save so she probably could’ve survived long enough to get raised or could’ve rolled better. She’s a rp player, but that’s it.
@@MorinehtarTheBlue It's on a timer. Whether it means they have to raise her before it expires or let it go and see what's coming is the real question now.
Gives me goosebumps thinking of Fearnes "Can you please come back? Because i'm getting a little scared." I wonder how many times she's said this to herself while waiting so many years for her parents to come back...
Chetney: Do you need some water or anything? Treshi: I could use some water, actually if you have some. Chetney: Yeah, me too. I'll let you know if we find any. Cold af!
Me: Are you hungry? My 14 year old Daughter: Actually I am pretty hungry it's about dinner time. Me: Good you know where the food is and have plenty of motivation to make us something to eat. My Daughter: 🤨😒🙄 Me: love you 🥺 Daughter: 🙄 fine Me: 😏🤪 Daughter: your lucky I love you 🙄 Me: anyone would be but of course you love me I'm special 😏 Daughter: (sarcastically) your special alright, specially crazy 🤪 Me: yes we are Both of us: 😂😜🤣🤪🤣
I don’t think Fearne was planning on reviving Laudna at all. She’s a fae who follows her own moral code and I think she would’ve healed Orym because shes closer to him. The fact that Ashley decided to not show or reveal the coin toss and also had such a guilty look on her face at 3:14:40, when Imogen was thanking her really solidifies it for me. If this is the case, it was such a brilliant and in character move for Fearne
But also a really hard choice for Ashley. I think it really was hard. She kept asking others to make it for her. But they want her to grow so had her choose. I'm really proud of her.
@@oakenshadow6763 also it was her turn and her spell, plus nobody wants to be in the position. I like the OP view though. At first I thought it was hidden to keep the suspense but this too could be true. I honestly thought Orym died from spoilers since I am behind on viewing but figured in that moment Ferne has the history and connection with Orym from Exandria.
i also think that either way the coin DID help her decide who to pick. you know when you can't make a decision so you have someone pick for you and it's only then that you realize that you want the other option more? i think that's exactly what happened. either way it confirmed the decision for her
As far as we know, Fearne could've very well cheated on that coin flip. She is the only one who saw the result and quickly put it away. I'm not saying that she didn't want to ress Laudna, just that is very in character of Fearne to cheat on the result to favor Orym, the same way Imogen would favor Laudna.
I like the idea of Fearne doing something like that. I actually thought it could be what she did. And if it is the case it would certainly be interesting to see it revealed in later episodes.
orim should of left the table too there was never 600gold worth of dimonds in there posession even laura noted that talisan gave them to FCG so this meen there was not any dimond left for Orim
Isn't that kind of a DM nightmare? I mean how are you going to get your party to fight evil gods on the moon on their own if they are in touch with a super high level group of adventurers like Vox Machina?
I am several months behind and just catching up on C3. It’s such a small detail, but the way that Matt spoke as Will to make the voice seem otherworldly really helped make the moment feel more real.
Same! I noticed that too and was already in tears because of Fearne's plea and that just solidified the sobbing for me. Especially because Liam acted it so well and Matt set the tone and mood so well
Matt's face when Orym mentions contacting the lord and lady of Whitestone is priceless, the face of a DM who suddenly has to process how this is gonna happen.
It's starting to get to be like Tiberius's "I know all these powerful people back home who will help" kind of meta-gaming imo. Not saying he's out of line just yet, but that's a slippery slope.
@@LizardOnAMushroom2358 I don't think that personally, the second campaign was very disconnected and now they want to revisit old threads. Besides he was literally sent by Kiki, it only makes sense he'd contact his boss when shit hits the fan.
@@LizardOnAMushroom2358 How is it metagaming? He's one of Keyleth's personal guards (not to mention Derrig's son-in-law) and somehow Vex and Percy's existence is outside knowledge? While I don't personally feel like it is a viable option, if he hadn't suggested it, all we'd be hearing is 'Orym knows someone who can do resurrections, why isn't he saying anything?' Tiberius' schtick was Orion making things up out of thin air without even discussing it with Matt to make it all about him which is a full 180 from anything that Liam does.
@@zedre7633 The disconnect happens for me when it's more than reporting though. I don't think FBI agents can just ask favors of the president. He's right to let Kiki know that there's some fuckery afoot, but he was instead talking about having Keyleth Tree Stride to them and resurrect a stranger to her. Like I said, it's not out of line quite yet, but we're getting to the point where things are getting way bigger than the party, and the temptation to let a lvl 20 druid/ranger/fighter do some of the leg work for them may be strong.
@@Aetheria60 Whether or not is meta-gaming is between Liam and Matt, in truth, but that line is blurry due to Liam personally knowing all about campaign one's characters, since he was there. I worry that he may have undue familiarity with these characters do to his own personal relationship to them instead of Orym's. Things like asking for favors from Keyleth to resurrect their dead friend wave as red flags to me. That kind of stuff is totally within the same vein of what Tiberius did back in C1, perhaps not quite as loud, but using power you know whether personally or peripherally from your character's background to fix personal problems for your character is a slippery slope. I'm surprised Matt allowed him to make a character that was as close to an old campaign character exactly for this reason. I'm just pointing out that this is something I see as potentially being a problem.
Orym getting the full-on Deadpool 2 "you're not done yet" treatment from Will absolutely destroyed me. His story in particular has struck a nerve with me. I love Orym, I love his mission, I love his backstory, I love "Big moon little moon," and I love how much coming back destroyed him because he was so fucking close to being with his man for all of eternity, only to step away once more for the good of the world because it's right. Not just because of a vague sense of duty but because it's *right.* He knows that. Will knows that. I love them. I want them to be together forever, but not yet. Not until Orym avenges his people. God dammit, Liam, you beautiful man, you have done such a gorgeous job with this character.
Everyone talking about Marisha and Ashley’s performance, but Liam’s moment as Orym talked to Will was hard hitting, just seeing the emotions on Liam’s face.
The face Liam was making was heartbreaking. But what else could we expect from Liam “life is Shakespearian tragedy” O’Brian at this point, this man breathes for the moments like this
Even last week, she handled it all with such grace. She’s a really good player. I’m just sad because laudna was the first character of hers that I really liked
After last week, I had the thought that if they could revive Fearne and Laudna, they could ask Keyleth to bring back Orym. I'm worried that Keyleth would be more open to resurrecting Orym, who serves her, than Launda who technically serves Delilah.
@@awisefool1975 I had that thought too but I'm unsure.... True Resurrection weighed heavily on her mind in campaign 1, as it felt unfair for her to choose who stays among everyone who dies in her very, very long life. I can see her not wishing to, even though it would tear her up like everyone else who's passed.
@@awisefool1975 but on the flip side of that, knowing that Laudna was one of the sun tree victims may make her feel guilty in a way that she was only killed because of vox machina so she may save her because of that.
@@MikeyYoFool yeah that was my exact thought as well, if they give keyleth the info, I don't see how she wouldn't want to make amends for that situation.
@@awisefool1975 I also don't think Matt would let Keyleth revive Laudna. It completely undermines any risk if they have a level 20 druid sitting in the back who can quickly undo any problems the party faces. They'd probably pass it off as something along the lines of her respecting the natural passage of life and death when refusing
Yeah I could feel him upping his comedic performance in response to Laura’s goading to try to keep everyone’s spirits up. It was also really clear in the last episode when everyone was scared they were going to TPK, Travis had a very “imma go down swingin’” mentality. He knew if someone was going to die, he was going to get some licks in on Otohan before going down. You could just see that his priority is making sure everyone has fun and is safe.
I saw a Twitch comment that pointed out that this would be the first time Marisha wasn't at the table for the entire episode of the main campaign in 8.5 years of CR.
Yeah. That's a lie. She was at the table for an hour out of three, which is also on par with her general interactions on the scale of her roleplay. Clearly visible.
@@Blue_Lunacy I hate to say it, but for all of campaign 2, it really felt like Marisha had like a 25-30% attention rate. In campaign 3 she's shown a lot more attention, but yeah in 2 it really felt like she was not there for most of it, attention wise. I don't blame her though, they still worked a lot outside of the campaign and this really is still a job.
@@CyKsFuze brother she was arguably the most aware of what was going on? Her whole character required hyper awareness of everything happening all the time
@@Chibipayne They didn't mean it's metagaming on the players part. The "poetic" aspect itself is meta 'cause it depends on having the knowledge that Marisha plays both characters
I don't think it's metagaming because Keyleth and later Vex'halia were already introduced in the campaign and both have some ties to Orym and Imogen, so it's perfectly reasonable for them to seek them out for help. Specially since Orym used to be Keyleth bodyguard and knows that she can help. It would be metagaming if they weren't introduced in the campaign and they were just trying to use their old characters to "cheat", but I'm sure Matthew wouldn't allow that if that was the case.
I’m just imagining the hypothetical scene of if they go to Whitestone to ask the de Rolo’s for help with Laudna, and Vex meets the girl that was strung up on the Sun Tree in effigy of her.
Honestly with how badly she single handedly destroyed this group... rn they need someone as OP as C1 characters if they want to level this playing field in < 3 levels. I feel like there was a lot held back. And that's for a group on 1 fight. Add a few more people on lvl 6-7 Imogens abilities and it seems like this should become a lvl 14+ campaign to not risk tpk
I feel like if that was the case she would not have looked back the other way, she would've immediately taken FCGs hand and said "Stay away from my stuff!"
Ashley getting to shine with these last few episodes, her family and everything, I always wished I got to see more of her in 1/2 cause she seemed almost awkward/out of place but she may genuinely be my favorite right now. The soft *brutal* jabs at her parents, the genuinely distraught and terrified childlike "Can you please come back? Because I'm getting a little scared" she's madness.
Ashley being able to be 100% full time in game has allowed her to really get comfortable. Plus, looking back at it all now I wonder how much her home situation was impacting her as well.
@@Ginric99 This is what I think about whenever anyone complains that she "forgets stuff". Knowing how much she's been dealing with for god knows how long, I'm not surprised she forgets how to play D&D. She's got other things on her mind. Having been in similar situations with abuse etc, it's hard to even function as a normal human being when that shit is going on. Add anxiety on top of it and you've got a mess lol. I've always loved any character she's played though, she seems to put so much energy into it. I love Pike, Yasha and Fearne so much.
"I trust Ashley Johnson, Ashley Johnson just told me SHE doesn't trust Ashley Johnson" is fantastic. We all have a party member who when you need to check a note your like "Hey I have this but.....what did I miss?"
It is something I have seen across player groups especially when you have a "dead" character in games like D&D where there is a chance of coming back. I remember campaigns where after a long battle late at night we ended the session with one character dead and more mooks approaching. The entire next session was filled with tense jokes, glances and sad smiles as the dead character's player sat at the table just listening and watching the follow-up fight and then the main villain battle. The tension was palatable but underlying until they got to a temple and with their sacrifice of diamonds scraped together from their meager fortunes the aged priest communed with the character's spirit first before attempting a resurrection (a rule I use to give the dead player a voice in deciding or guiding if there should even be an attempt to bring them back because it can be devastating to party finances) and he just said: "No, she asks you not too, the outer planes are fascinating and the next adventure was too tempting for her to return" (he played a female gnome) and so the evening ended the players and their characters mourned the loss and a little later under convenient circumstances a little kobold showed and joined the party fitting in, in a new way. The session after the mood was high and everyone was enjoying themselves again.
@@coledibiase5971 That is C1E113, when Vox Machina finds the masked guards, kills 2 of them, and discovers by unmasking the 3rd that the guards are actually Kaylie, Cassandra, and Gilmore. 1:10:59 Marisha blowing kisses goodbye to her friends, I feel like that’s how Laudna felt in her last moments, not with malice or hate in her heart, but love, kindness, and empathy to her friends, appreciating and cherishing all the good times she had with them. She did not allow all the trauma that has endured define who she is to the end. However, I am a little worried since in the previous episodes, Delilah kept telling Laudna how her friends will betray and that she's better off on her own, yet in this instance, Orym gets revivified and not her. I'm not saying her friends betrayed her, it was a very difficult decision for them to make at that moment. But I feel like Delilah might use this information as an advantage to manipulate Laudna into doing her bidding more. At 1:02:36, you could feel Imogen’s aggression and desperation in bribing Deliah to bring back Laudna, but eventually, the aggressiveness fades away and turns into grief and guilt at 1:13:02 - 1:13:20. :( At 1:04:00, “We’ll find a way back for you, I promise.” The way Ashley/Fearne delivered that line really adds to the emotional turmoil of the hard decision she had to make. It’s like she’s a scared little kid again, feeling helpless and alone. Not wanting to lose either of them, she reaches out to Orym, her closest friend and somewhat parental figure, to help her.
it's a great reminder that these players have a bunch of awards for their amazing acting skill. Finding the right words on the spot and delivering them with so much heart isn't easy. Man these scenes killed me, even more so on rewatches. Also fuck you for being so damn right about that first thing :((
Oh you freaking creep (in a good, DMlike way), I hadn't thought how Delilah would use it. You're so, so right. So much it's hurtful in advance. Your mind is awesome, I hate it.
Actually the part that broke my heart most was Marisha said in her last moments Laudna was confused. Poor thing. Especially when we know she was confused and alone the first time too
@@888pil i like the idea even tho time wise it doesnt work that delilah replays the moment that fearne flips the coin and chooses orym. over and over in laudnas little “limbo” (as until the next ep its gonna be pretty unsure if marishas gonna come back as laudna) and D being like i told u so, u need yo trust me next time.
while everything in this episode was heart wrenchingly amazing.... can we talk about the fact that Ashton said "Call Jiana Hexum. Tell her I will do anything." when they were trying to figure out how to save Laudna
So many people seemed to miss this. Ashton was willing to essentially sell his soul for a chance to save Laudna. When a standoffish punk-inspired loner let's down his walls and forms bonds, they run deep.
@@carefullytunedrng4062 I'm afraid that I think that was a little bit of fan service. I don't blame Taliesin for doing it, but it maked Ashton a little less interesting for me.
@@jackal59 How is character devolopment fan service? Ashton and Laudna just had a very personel and deep coversation so theyd be closer than before and a whole thing about punk culture is loyalty to your people
@@teenybopper2352 And loyalty to his people is a character trait that Ashton has shown throughout this campaign. Bell's Hells are his people now, too, and he's bonded with Laudna more than any of them.
Character death is sometimes hard to deal with especially when very skilled voice actors are involved. The way Laura begged for the lives of her friends was incredible. It reminded me of when Travis yelled 'FIX HIM' as Grog back when Scanlan died. A part of me doesn't want to see their characters die while another part of me is curious what they'll come up with next.
(Keeping things intentionally vague in case people haven't seen/heard this). The largest problem I have with this is the entire setup. The characters were killed for a plot point. Everyone who died might as well have been wearing red-shirts for the entire campaign. Imogen is the only PC character, the rest of the party is playing NPCs. The entire Odohan fight was a railroad, the character deaths were a railroad. No one had the slightest possibility of surviving that combat. Odohon at some point attacks 4 times, 3 on-hand one off, with infinite shadows. So Matt threw a level 20 Psi-Fighter with legendary resistance and legendary attacks, and apparently infinite movement along with all fighter abilities, at a party of 8th level characters in a can't avoid/can't run fight with the intent to kill as many characters as possible till Laura got the hint OR failed a saving throw...all to make a point for the story. What I really want to know is: Did the players who rolled up new characters after this want to play different characters or was this just DM Fiat that took away the agency of half the party? I know when I roll up a character and spend enough time and effort to create a backstory for them that I become at least slightly attached to the character. Many characters die, that it was all but planned that my character was required to die so that a DM could further his plot? That my entire hours of gameplay were simply leading up to an unavoidable and unwinnable encounter set so that my DM could make a plot point? Every DM can kill a party. It doesn't take skill or craft to kill characters. Deus Ex Machina is terrible writing...whether it comes in the form of saving the heroes or doing them harm. The party was introduced to Esteross at it's inception, completed the missions they were given, leading to Esteross sending them out to Basurus to capture Treshy. The DM put Treshy in a secured stronghold, gave the party a way in, showed the party where he was, then threw a chaotic event at them challenging them to get him out. He transitioned from that only opportunity into an unwinnable and unavoidable combat to kill characters so that he could check off his plot point. Every character that died in that combat is a redshirt. Every character that lived beyond that combat is also a redshirt...other than Imogen. I'm...exceptionally disappointed.
@@douglasw0 I dunno, by the sounds of things she was getting fairly low on hit points. One AoE spell took out all the shades in one go, and I thought they had way more spell slots saved up, I couldn't remember them using them all before this fight. They also had a lot of powerful potions and that magic-amplifying stuff on their hands. It genuinely feels like they would've scraped by if they didn't scatter or Odohan didn't roll top of initiative. A lot went very wrong very quickly. Some definitely would have gone down, but it'd get close enough for tension rather than having multiple deaths. But yeah I agree about Imogen, feels weird having a main character in this campaign.
@@douglasw0they actually could have won the fight if they A: didn't enter the fight with little to no spell slots B: didn't spend half the fight running and C: got better initiative roles. The fight was actually really nicely balanced to be a challenging threatening fight but still doable. Like a dark souls boss.
@@douglasw0 They could have beaten Otohan if they all just attacked. Besides, I don't think Matt was intending for the party to fight Otohan at all. It took a while before he called for an initiative roll, even after Imogen had already attacked.
I like how Matt let them have this time. In game and rules would say they waited too long but Matt could tell his friends were really having a difficult time with this and let them have it. Great DMing as usual.
@@ericgrande7155 - yeah absolutely. Like 10 minutes of RPing a choice Fearne had to make in about 24 seconds, or she couldn't bring back either of them. But if Matt had reminded them of the time limit and rushed them, that would have been even more stressful and not fun for the players. And even worse if he'd just let it play out and then told them the spell failed because they took too long, that would be realistic but very not fun for the players. Like a further unexpected loss that would feel like Matt being unfair, not tragic in-game circumstances that the players just have to accept. Imagine if they'd failed one of those resurrection checks, though, especially the first one. I don't know if Guidance can help with Matt's revivify rules, but it did mechanically work like an ability check. I was really worried that nobody had cast Guidance before either of the attempts, even though they had time (e.g. FCG could have cast instead of dashing, and moved + revivify the next turn). FCG just barely made the first check.
@@jackakimbo5718 - What's funnier is that I don't think Ashley intended it as a joke. Just an idea to avoid having to choose herself, which she only realized after saying out loud would be horrible.
She knows how to add that little twinge of desperation and sadness in her voice so easily. She did it again when she made the decision and during the casting. Even after all the laughing about making a vote, she was able to turn everybody's emotions on a dime.
Also the complete disregard from Fearne herself that Fearne just had come back from the dead. It wasn't even a concern, all she was concerned about was that Orym was dead and then later on Laudna.
What stinks is that Matt hinted to Laura/Imogen that she had the power to bring Laudna back, but Laura didn't notice the hint..I don't know if any of them caught it..
That's because Imogen has a history with Laudna. What's more curious is Fearne flipped a coin after having adventured with Orym previously. I would have thought the choice was easy, "Sorry, Laudna. I have been partied with Orym for months."
She didn't say "Delilah take the wheel" before rolling and this is what happens. I can't imagine this group without Laudna. She is the most interesting and unique character and Marisha gave 110% to bring her to life. She has a lot more to offer and I hope they manage to bring her back.
Definitely the coolest backstory w FCG as close second. I feel like she will come back unless they take her to Vox Machina bc they know Delilah too well
@@ThePalePrince I saw a very interesting post that posited Laudna would be a chance at redemption for Vox Machina. This girl who was murdered and strung on the sun tree for the offence of looking like a member of Vox Machina? Tell me the De Rolos and Keyleth wouldnt jump on a chance to right that wrong! (Also just one more chance for delilah to get punched in the face!)
Yeah, personally Id like for one of them to die without being resurrected, at least not for a while, otherwise it is like it almost doesnt matter what they do, they're always gonna all survive... Unfortunately it turned out to be Laudna who is one of my favorite characters in the party, Id have liked for Orym to go cause apart from the cool combat flavour here and there, he is kinda boring and my least favorite of the group. Also the whole Delilah thing is interesting too. Even if they dont ressurect her which Im pretty sure theyre gonna be able to, it would be interesting to see which new character Marisha would come up with.
Ashton's determination and spite and strength of will being directed towards protection is so good. I don't know if there's anything more punk than using your anger to help people
ikr?? he _just_ got free of his debt and he's completely willing to tell Jiana Hexum of all people that he'll do *anything* like damn that hit hard. they do not fuck around.
Yeah, hes been like that from the start pretty much. Throughout the campaigns his remarks etc sometimes go unnoticed, but they are often fantastic lines.
He always has great one liners and likes to pour cups of wisdom. Caduceus was one of my favorite characters. However, Taliesen in combat is pure anxiety to watch lol
@@Kaiser8361N came here to say the same, his characters are great and he can spin gold with lines. It's a shame that his panicked and incomplete communication during his turn really grinds with the flow, I know others stall and deliberate on turns also but none so often or to such a degree as Talesin.
S P O I L E R S The worst part is the day of her death she was told by Delilah that her friends were going to betray her and that she was "never alive" by FCG. It ended with her friends "betraying" her (not betraying her in the sense of leaving her to die but more in Delilah's point of view of leaving her fate to a coin flip) and dying before working through the trauma of "never being alive". Marisha had dealt with this with such grace, not being mad with the dice rolls or decisions made made. This one REALLY hurt. You were alive and fun scary our macabre queen.
i can pinpoint exactly where this episode began to break me into little tiny bits and that was when Fearne just cries out into the wind that Orym is dead (48:46 -- 48:52). Ashley Johnson went for the jugular with that, goddamn. like this whole episode was a whammy but that was the foundation ripped out from underneath me lol T-T
So great to see the role play that happened while hiding at Joe’s. Characters under extreme duress and as they’ve matured and all the lore that’s unfolded since the very beginning being drawn in combined with their backstories to create beautiful moments.
Okayyyyy Marisha asking if she should leave silently and Matt's gentle nod had me tearing up, my reaction was somewhere in between Ashley and Laura's. Seeing that spot at the table empty was so strange!
Ashley’s acting when she asked Orym to come back because she was scared. I started crying not only because the acting felt real but the idea of being alone and without your friends is my biggest fear. I felt what Fearne was feeling, hopeless and lonely and scared
"As I died, I rejoiced. I would see my family again. But then I woke up back on the battlefield. Back in Kamigawa. Back in hell." -Kenzo the Hardhearted
Only if he has a cock ring of revivify that we learn about in some incredibly inappropriate way. The wildest part is Liam would somehow find a way to make that character as emotionally engaging and heart wrenching as Caleb or Orym.
watching marisha quietly pack up her things and silently ask matt if it was time for her to leave was heartbreaking !!! I love this group of people so much, the stories they tell are amazing and the passion is so great and genuine. I watched these episodes back to back and it has definitely been the hardest I've ever cried at d&d
I'm part of the critters liking the idea that Fearne lied about how the coin flip landed, BUT while most are focusing on party drama that may result from this, I however am thinking of how this will affect them on the macro scale since the coin flipped was of the Changebringer. If Fearne "defied" the changebringer I wonder how Matt would handle that, since his interest was piqued when he heard FCG mention the coin.
@@dsoul1305 Because he is the DM and can ask her, or she herself can bring it up down the line. Matt constantly talks to them about their characters to make sure each player gets an enjoyable game experience.

@@dsoul1305 Why would she lie if Matt asked her in private? Matt isn't gonna claim she lied on a whim, he'd ask her privately for the truth, he wouldn't just ask her over the table.
Finally starting to watch critical role after hearing about it for so long has been a blast. This episode and the last one was a punch in the gut with the tone shift after all of the fairly light-hearted moments. While I don't cry easy, the acting, urgency of the situation, and being so attached to the characters made me shed some tears. Props to the cast for creating such a vibrant world and powerful story, I'm extremely excited to catch up to the current episodes.
Did you start with this campaign or did you watch all the others. This is the first season I’ve watched and am tempted to go back and watch them, but that’s soo much time lol
@@kalebgraham2345 I watched a few episodes of campaign 1 but had a hard time getting into it. Campaign 3 has an amazing set, and overall production value is much better. Am planning on catching up with C3 and then going back to watch C1 + C2 now that I'm a bit more invested in the story.
Campaign 1 is hard to get into, especially because of some tension at the table. The problem player leaves after episode 27, and they really hit their stride during the Briarwood Arc, which is episodes 24-38. It's a truly spectacular story. I watched it at 1.25-1.5 speed, mostly, so it wouldn't take as long.@@ExplorerValenis
I love how Ashton is so fucking pissed Taliesin looks like he is going to smash the table as well but we kinda know he is too sweet of a man to actually do it. Acting at its finest
This is why gentle repose is such a great spell to keep prepped. That way it keeps revivify online for a week in game time so you can get diamonds if you are caught unprepared.
Revivify only works for a minute post death, so the next available spell they can do is a 5th level Raise Dead for 500gp diamond (or Reincarnate with 1000gp in rare oils and unguents, but that is unlikely and unnecessary as they have the whole body). Or some other kind of ritual because of Launda's unique background.
@@shaylic3795it states that days spent under the influence of the spell don't count against the time limit, so I would argue that if GR is cast within the 1 minute after the death, Revivify is still in play after 10 days, but if it is cast after that, then the time for Revivify has passed
I have to wonder if they cast resurrection on Laudna, will she come back as a Human instead of a Hollow One? It would be an interesting development for her to adjust to being truly alive after spending most of her life partially undead.
I thought the same thing when FCG cast gentle repose which is supposed to prevent a corpse from becoming/turning undead. Seems as if resurrection would be the only way to get 'a' Laudna back (However, likely without the warlock connection to Lady Briarwood)
This was my thought as well, especially after her conversation with Ashton about not fully being able to reclaim her life. I wonder if there’s any kind of resurrection that would stop her from being a Hollow One. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility from Matt’s perspective.
@@conorhall4083 thankfully she still possesses her own innate natural magical abilities since she's multiclassed as a sorcerer... unless of course that's ALSO the power of delilah and it's simply just a way to demonstrate the power she wants via game mechanics...
what i'm curious to see play out is how Marisha's presence at the table will be tackled and if we'll perhaps see an arc in the vein of the Adventures of Sir Taryon Darrington where Marisha will pilot another character in the span of episodes it takes to get Laudna back or if they'll really just be able to resurrect Laudna in just a handful of episodes.
fr tbh im dreading this next episode the most. now that shes left the table im hoping shell come back in the next episode so we dont miss her for long. cuz i mean marisha not being at the table just feels so wrong to me. like shes always there it jst doesnt feel right if shes not. then again it might hit the fact laudna is gone like a little harder.
I don't want Marisha's perfect attendance in seven years of doing this to be tarnished. Next episode will be the first she won't be in if they can't bring her back by then and that empty space between Travis and Sam is going to be felt.
@@Beretmaster666 Even then, during a moment with the carpet and one of the two split groups, it sounds like the characters that weren't being focused on still had their players present watching. When the carpet burned they made reference to other cast members screaming in another room iirc.
Hey so... Ashton said they were "soft once", and their father, at least, was elven... What if the Hishari messing with the Elemental Plane and that cataclysm is what turned Ashton into an earth genasi? I wonder too if the ritual they attempted is at all related to the sort of sigil that someone was messing with in the Fire Ashari tribe in ExU. The portals must've been another gateway into a Plane, at least...
This is a very strong possibility as in Exandria the Genasi aren’t necessarily like the other races. More akin to Tiefling. Many of whom are within the Ashari due to their close proximity to the portals to the elemental planes.

😂 That is the proof that the show is not scripted! 😊 They are masters of the story and that was the wrong thing to say at the right time! 😂
Came here to make sure this was a top comment because I knew someone was going to point that out. What a hilarious moment
The fact that Marisha just so calmly got up and left the table at the slight nod from Matt, And the table’s reaction, was heartbreaking
Her making eye contact with Matt, his realization at her ask and then nod was absolutely devastating. What a game
What time stamp was it?

That phrase broke open things in me I didn't even know I was locking up, it broke me open. That and the "no you are not putting her in that hole" unlocked such a tsunami of emotions and memories that I was so glad I was picking up my 14 year old daughter right then because it pulled me out of a torrent of past experiences 💔
Everyone will point out performance of Marisha, Laura and Liam and rightfully so, but for me Ashley was a standout.
The way she shedded off Fearne any layers of confidence she put around herself and showed a scared little girl living at her core was exquisite.
I agree so much, her performance in that moment gave me chills
I respectfully disagree. She seemed too worried about what Ashley would do and didn’t want to upset anyone irl. For me it removed immersion. She just seemed flustered and took 5 min in game to get off a spell that only had 30 seconds to happen. It robbed the moment of urgency and impact. Imo.

@@jackal59 I think if they do find a method of resurrecting Laudna, and it manages to work...
It won't be Laudna in the pilots seat...
Wow Molly having a heart to heart with Beau before his death in campaign two and then Laudna with Ashton just before…
I thought of that too...it hurts me
Ashton and Laudna were actually enjoyable. I was hoping for beau and Molly to die because they were terrible and I was not able to enjoy them at all
Marisha’s and Taliesin’s characters are no longer allowed to have wholesome moments together. >:(
You can't just say that. That hurts.
As terrible as that would be, I actively want that to be true. The rest of the cast’s reaction to that reveal would be so good.
@@itsthermostime2830 it also makes sense. she has known Orym for a year.
i think she hid the result because either way she wanted the dramatic pause to make you think she was going to save one and then say they'd "come back for them"
Oh not even a question.
Everyone said Laudna came back before, so Fearne probably felt comfortable with her deception. But, if Imogene finds out, she will lose her mind.
For all the talk of how Chetney was Travis' attempt at making a character that his wife would never want to date, it seems like Chetney is turning out to be the most amusing of all of Travis' characters for Laura. He gets so many laughs out of her with just the smallest things, it's very wholesome.

@@P0rk_Sinigang i think they meant to reply to a different comment
@@codewordbw3340 This, plus many fey creatures get easily childish in their reactions which is part of the mood
"When you see a person expire... you know."
With support from a knowing nod from Taliesin, Matt speaks the truth. Death just looks different.
He probably has some worse experience's, but look at Taliesins between the sheet and listen to the heart attack story. It's really amazing
@@samuraiko Liam said something about thinking back to 6 years ago and how much there is to do when someone dies. 6 years ago IRL is when his mother passed away.

The fore-shadowing of Laudna having told Ashton that sometimes she feels like it doesn't fucking matter no matter how hard she tries to reclaim her life, and evil-FCG telling Laudna she was never alive, literally earlier in that same day.

I was coming down here to comment on them saying, “I’m happy to owe more” When their whole goal upfront was to not owe anyone just 💔

i mean... she was also actively poking fun at the whole thing with that sweater
Why would she get mad? She's the only character to have any reasonable expectation to cheat death outside of resurrection, and also the most likely to have death directly trigger character development. It's all but confirmed with the Gentle Repose shenanigans.
@@aerundel Considering the effects of Gentle Repose you have to wonder if said spell didn't just cut that route off.

While I don't personally feel like it is a viable option, if he hadn't suggested it, all we'd be hearing is 'Orym knows someone who can do resurrections, why isn't he saying anything?'
Tiberius' schtick was Orion making things up out of thin air without even discussing it with Matt to make it all about him which is a full 180 from anything that Liam does.
ITS SCRIPTED, SHE KNOWS SHE'S COMING BACK.
Even last week, she handled it all with such grace. She’s a really good player. I’m just sad because laudna was the first character of hers that I really liked
The death of laudna would really add on detrimentally to Orym’s survivor’s guilt.

1:03:30 That whispered "I love you" between Liam and Marisha 🥺
The brief return of Vaxleth 💔
I am impressed with how they handled the situation. Liam and Marisha supported each other through the tension.
Thank you for the timestamp. I don't know where to start.
At 1:04:00, “We’ll find a way back for you, I promise.” The way Ashley/Fearne delivered that line really adds to the emotional turmoil of the hard decision she had to make.

"Death is but a waiting game."
while everything in this episode was heart wrenchingly amazing....
can we talk about the fact that Ashton said "Call Jiana Hexum.
@@jackal59 huh, literally how is that fan service

Ashley's "I hate this game" at 38:50 followed by her nervous squeak was the greatest gift of humor we could have received this episode.
Having to choose between reviving one family member or the other is deeply fucked up. Damn this episode hit hard.
Fearne's Choice. It was brutal...
Even more fucked up: putting it to a vote 😂
The mere idea is so DARK lmao, perfect joke to ease the tension
@@jackakimbo5718 - What's funnier is that I don't think Ashley intended it as a joke. Just an idea to avoid having to choose herself, which she only realized after saying out loud would be horrible.
Ashley dealing me 3d10 psychic damage with that "Orym is dead...Orym is dead!"
She knows how to add that little twinge of desperation and sadness in her voice so easily. She did it again when she made the decision and during the casting. Even after all the laughing about making a vote, she was able to turn everybody's emotions on a dime.
Ashley really cast Inflict Wounds there
When she said "What the FUCK do you MEAN Orym's dead!" I felt the pain and anger.
48:40 for those wanting to relive that damage, or start at 47:12 to start at the F-bomb one.
Also the complete disregard from Fearne herself that Fearne just had come back from the dead. It wasn't even a concern, all she was concerned about was that Orym was dead and then later on Laudna.
Matt's face when he describes the difference between dead and unconscious just hurts
I love how you can practically see "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST SAVE LAUDNA" written across Laura's/Imogen's face.

The worst part is the day of her death she was told by Delilah that her friends were going to betray her and that she was "never alive" by FCG.
Now I can't stop but hoping Liam's future character has the amazing New York accent from 34:14
Only if he has a cock ring of revivify that we learn about in some incredibly inappropriate way. The wildest part is Liam would somehow find a way to make that character as emotionally engaging and heart wrenching as Caleb or Orym.

I have to wonder if they cast resurrection on Laudna, will she come back as a Human instead of a Hollow One? It would be an interesting development for her to adjust to being truly alive after spending most of her life partially undead.
Hollow One doesn't technically replace your race, but it would still be interesting.
I thought the same thing when FCG cast gentle repose which is supposed to prevent a corpse from becoming/turning undead. Seems as if resurrection would be the only way to get 'a' Laudna back (However, likely without the warlock connection to Lady Briarwood)
Please, please just let the dead lady be happy. That's almost all I want at this point.
This was my thought as well, especially after her conversation with Ashton about not fully being able to reclaim her life. I wonder if there’s any kind of resurrection that would stop her from being a Hollow One. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility from Matt’s perspective.
