  • Valentines Day 2020 my wife give me the "Grow It" Bonsai Seed Kit (from gift republic). In this video I prepare the seeds for germination and get them going, showing their journey for the first 6 months of their life.
    The "mixed bonsai seeds" are actually Japanese Black Pine, Silver Birch, Downy Birch and Black Alder.
    🔴 I expand on the instructions and give more information on what to do here:

    I have written this post on my website to hopefully give you a full set of instructions / a full guide/ answer all your questions type thing. - so if you need any extra info, it should be here -

    For those having issues with seeds growing right out of the package at first (like i did on my first try), put them in a freezer for 2wks and try the seeds again (sometimes seeds need a dormant period of "winter" to trick them into growing). I planted 3 to pick the best one(s) and one gave me a 4th seedling!! 🤭🤭 This video has been pretty hepful with knowledge! My little trees are needing a LST session soon!

      @BackGardenBonsai  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thats cool. I wouldnt put them in the fridge. the whole point of the fridge is to get them to germinate... which yours have done.
      you can either just leave the whole pot out, let those two grow and see what happens to the rest of the seeds
      ...or you can try and remove the two that have popped and put them in a different pot then fridge the rest (huge warning, this is mega risky!!! newly germinated seeds dont like to be disturbed..part 2 is out in about an hour, you will see what can happen when you mess with them)
      i'd properly just leave them all out untouched and see what happens with the rest, youve got 2 already, so thats good.

    Good experiments. And you've shown that these kits do actually contain viable material - although I agree it's annoying that they call it "bonsai kit" with a photo of a 100 year old tree on the box, when it's basically seeds and coir.

    What are you sprinkling on top of the last trial?
    I got a similar, yet much cheaper kit. Just 6 spruce seeds, which I didn’t soak or refrigerate-just planted in a very small pot that unfortunately doesn’t have drainage-3 have popped up tho!!! I plan to move them to better draining pot, but not sure how long I should wait? Or what soil mixture to use…I have perlite?
    And last question, I promise lol I hoped to grow these inside, but what should I do for winter? Do they need a cold period?
    Sorry for all the questions..I’ve been growing succulents and tropical plants for years successfully and wanted to try my hand at this. Probably should have started with a succulent bonzai 🤦🏻‍♀️ but now I’m committed haha
    If anyone has answers, please help 🙏

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      im just sprinkling more soil on top. it just looks funny as its dry ...also its bonsai soil, so probably why it looks different. although if you have grown succulents you might be using something similar. its just molar clay, perlite and a dash of compost.
      give this a read for more about soils - www.backgardenbonsai.com/a-general-guide-to-bonsai-soil/
      Also good work on getting some spruce to grow, id let them grow a bit before translating into something else. maybe when they are a couple of inches tall and you wont break them when you try and move them.
      As for indoors. not ideal, spruce will need cold. read these two, and you should get some idea on what needs done/why
      www.backgardenbonsai.com/what-are-cold-hardy-bonsai-trees/ and www.backgardenbonsai.com/how-to-protect-your-bonsai-trees-over-winter/
      sorry lots of links, but bonsai is all about learning. the more you know. the better :)

    2:35 I received a bonsai kit last year for Christmas. I haven't done anything with it because the instructions say to use seed heating mat for best results. Due to unexpected vet bills and a couple of personal tragedies this year, I haven't been able to purchase a seed heating mat.
    Why would your kit say to do the opposite? That is, put the planted seeds in the fridge?
    3:11 what did you do about the mold? Did you add cinnamon to it? That's one of the "popular" suggestions on YT. I've tried before with regular gardening, but it was pretty much useless. I could have done something incorrectly, though.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      it will depend on the seeds your kit has. but basically all you are doing is replicating nature ...inside. i would say you wouldnt need a mat. you can just place them somewhere warm.
      my kit contains trees that go through winter and that is all the fridge is doing. if you look at nature -seeds fall in autumn - sit in the cold over winter - sprout in spring. the fridge is just giving them a fake winter. when you take them out, they think it is spring as it now feels warm and they grow.
      as for mould, i just picked it off. its pretty harmless if it just on the soil like i had it.

    i bought jeruselem pine seeds and the instructions tell me to wrap the seeds in damp cotton and refrigerate. it then tells me to check the seeds regularly and keep it damp. it says when i see signs of growth i can then plant it. can someone please explain what i have to do i am a bit confused thanks

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      are you confused why? or the how?
      if its the why, its because the fridge makes the seeds think its winter, so when they come out they will think its spring and wake up and grow.
      as for the how. do what it says. gets some damp kitchen paper and hold it over the seeds. put this in a sealed back and put it in the fridge for how ever long its says. then after a while start checking like once a week to make sure it is still damp and when the root comes out, plant it.
      this is the method i normally use. the kit in the video says to do it differently, they put the seed in the soil and then put the whole lot in the fridge. its really the same difference.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You will probably find its fine.
      The fact it is in a bag usually means the water cant escape, so it will stay wet the whole time.
      I would still check every few days though, to make sure and water if need.
      ..then when its actually growing you will need to check daily to see if it needs water or not.

      close the bag at the start to keep the air ...well more importantly the moisture in. when they grow you will need to start opening the bag, so they can grow in a more normal climate. the bag basically a mini green house, so it doesnt need to be airtight or anything, its just to help keep things humid.

      well eventually yes they will need separated. the big decision is when. You could do it pretty soon as its nearly spring, so an ideal time ...but the danger is that its small, so risky to mess with it, so if you dont do it now, you would have to next year for sure ..but then can both of them handle being squished into a small pot for another year
      id probably do it this year, but be very delicate about the whole operation and try and upset the roots as little as possible

  • @falkhammermuller9342
    @falkhammermuller9342 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Uhm ..... not sure if I got the timeline right here.
    You've started in feb. with the damp soil and added the seeds. Than you kept it in a bag or other closed container outside the fridge for two weeks. Right? Than in the fridge, also covered, for 6-8 weeks. Right?
    So we should be in mid april. by now. Thats 8 weeks.
    But in the video you show us results in mid may, where they are still in a bag/closed container. are they still in a fridge at this time? Or have you taken them out mid april and left them out than?

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes. 2 weeks sealed in the bag, just sat there... then 6 weeks in the fridge. so i took them out mid April. i show this, there is nothing really going on apart from some mold and a tiny tip.
      at this point they did NOT go back in the fridge. ... but did stay in the bag.
      I kept them in the bag to act as a little green house, keeping them warm and trapping in the moisture so they humidity wasn't changed to quickly. then you will see in may.. and june ...and even july that the bag is still there. by this point the bag is fully open and rolled all the way down and really only being used for the pot to sit in, so water doesnt go all over the place when i pick it up.
      once you take then out of the fridge dont put them back in. just open the bag slowly over a few weeks to change the humidity gradually so it can adjust to the outside world and it will all be fine :)
