This scene always made me sad because it's clear from his reaction, even as a zombie, that Ben recognizes Barbara. It even looks as though he tried to say her name.

@@bozmundarts2614 Ya, but this early in the game? Bare in mind that the only reason for this movie's existence, while a good movie in it's own right, was because Romero was pissed about his first movie accidentally being public domain. This was meant to make back all the money he lost. By his own admittance no less. So with Savini's direction, doing something like this is a bit of a shocker to me, because at this point in the game, the Ghouls were only supposed to show primitive intelligence before it evolved. @@bozmundarts2614 You may want to check the Screenplay Credit. This movie is written by Romero. The guy that was hired to direct this movie, is the guy who did the gore and zombie effects in Dawn and Day. Tom Savini. And they still have to be on the lookout for anything that can cause death, as where there's corpses, there's zombies.

The Barbara from 1968 was catatonic, inconsolable and scared out of her wits, as many would likely be in a scenario like this. This Barbara from 1989 (year it takes place) was someone who was resourceful, pragmatic and a quick learner, as many would at least attempt to be in a scenario like this. Both are products of their respective times, and neither one invalidates the other since people would likely act like one of them. It's understandable to gravitate to this version of her because she's someone we would strive to be and/or would want to help us survive a zombie apocalypse.

Whenever someone dies that is important, boom! That has my attention. The Walking Dead used to do a great job with it... Not so much any more. I also don't appreciate it when everyone dies and the apocalypse isn't averted. That is just lazy writing.

I'll never like it more than the original, but it does illustrate some of the original's points better, like how humanity's biggest enemy in a catastrophe is itself. Barbra isn't just some propped up macho female to compensate for the original film, it's rather clear she isn't processing her experience and is basically going psycho as a defense mechanism.

Or merely sense a familiarity he doesn't understand......the way his mouth lifts in to the beginnings of a snarl but he still doesn't move, and is then blown away! Like the zombie daughter earlier in the film, does she recognise Cooper in some way?? She could have gone for him first but doesn't, despite him being the closest. Romero's zombies seem to hold on to some of their humanity, something other zombies in pop culture never seem to possess. Dawn of the Dead has the zombies returning and trying to get into the mall as it was once a place they had good experiences in, and then theres Day of the Dead's trained zombie who appears to have regained a lot of his former self, but still lives with instinct.

It's highly recommended. Savini played with audience expectations right from the beginning.

I know what they were trying to do with the whole philosophy of the undead but in truth she’s just one of those people who’s always thinking like that always beating around the bush never making a decision and isolating her self and when that guy sits buy her and he says “hi” she would reply “ what does it mean to be alive” and the guy with his red cup stands up and says “goodbye”

What makes this a little less than the original was the lack of "news" coverage the original had that made it look like a documentary.

Spat out his last good cigarette too. It was just too much for his sanity to take. All that time, the key was right there and clearly labeled.

I remember doing the same exact thing in early TH-cam years but wasn't so lucky with results and kinda gave up looking for it or just forgot about it (like how we forgot about "ask a ninja") until this popped up now.
I guess nostalgia is the new sleeping disorder or rather an age related ailment if you let it be.

yeah because he is a corpse. Not a rabid dog zombie jumping at everything like a seal. Reactions are slow as hell. Thinking is gone.
Most zombies in some media will stare at u and utter moans then all of a sudden they jump at you with open arms.

For all Ben knew he thought that he still made it out alive. Even as a zombie. Even though he still recognized Barbara. Just like Stephen actually remembered both Fran and Peter in Dawn despite having also turned on the elevator when he led the other monsters back up towards their hideout in the mall and he remembered the false wall.
