      I just bought the combo from the original owner. It's in fantastic condition, still using factory meter lamps and all capacitors holding original value. It looks amazing.

    Oh wow - I just found this channel, and saw this video. I had both these components and they were the best sounding bits of kit I have yet come across. The preamp, in addition to having great sound, had the most flexible signal routing I've seen in a consumer unit; I ended up using it in my recording studio.

    I recently sold a pair of M-504s that I used to bi-amp. Built solid they sound soooo smooth.. Best sound for the money. Sold them for $620 and $650. From Texas to CA and second went to Canada. By today's standards, to recreate this sound, pay $2500 to 5000 each. And NO I never changed lamps to LEDs or pimp out. These amps deserve better respect.

    • @davidg7064
      @davidg7064 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just because you change original incandescents to LED’s, that means your pimping out & disrespecting the 504? You idiot, your the one who disrespected them by selling them so cheap.

    • @denniseldridge2936
      @denniseldridge2936 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed about the 504. But I later walked into a thrift shop and found a GFA555 sitting forlorn on the floor with it's top cover off. They let me take it for free and I found out it had very similar sound qualities in a package with weighed a fraction of the 504.

I have Intergra Receiver and it has so much on that you can get lost but you are absolutely right.This is when they have absolute Quality you can't find no more.Even the way it was made pure quality.Thanks so much for sharing this Deb.✌️👍P.S.Beautiful Music Too.

    Ain't no doubt about it, this is one of the vintage power amps that is literally the poster child of later 1980's amps. A friend had this unit many years ago and I thought it was a sweet component. A few years back my hifi repair shop had one for sale, fully restored. He was asking $600 for it. I wanted it sooooo freakin' bad, but didn't want to get fully into separates at this stage of my life. At over 150wpc there are very few speakers it can't handle. Cosmetically, functionally and vintage-ly (??) it is one far out power amp.

    I bought this same setup brand new in 1988 or 89 while stationed at Torrejon AB Spain. It's still in immaculate condition aside from the A/B speaker select switches won't stay pushed in unless i stick a guitar pick between them. Aside from that this set is a power house and nothing i've owned since I've had these even compares. to them. I doubt i'll ever sell em really. I would like to get the speaker switches repaired but don't know who would be right to repair them. I wanna keep everything as factory as I can on them. Til then the ole guitar pick will have to do. Thanks for the vid :)

    I have owned my P-304/M-504 since I bought them new in the Early `80s. I paired them up then with a set of Bose 901's. I don't use it so much now because all four sit in my basement where I haven't been doing a lot of work lately. I used to spend a lot of time down there either building or fixing electronics, reloading ammo, or manufacturing on my milling machine. I now have a couple of new Denon/Klipsch 7.2.2 and 7.1 systems that are exquisite, but even with the Klipsch Reference Premier top tier models driven by a Denon AVR-X4300H 125w/ch with an Emotiva 150w/ch amp driving my mains and dual 800w R-115SW subs, it just matches the raw punch and power of the M-504 Bose 901 combo, but the new stuff does not deliver the warmth of the vintage stuff. Don't get me wrong, the new amps are great, but I would not be loathe to get rid of any of it and expect most of it will need replacing within a few years, whereas I fully expect the m504 to easily last another 35 years and probably outlive me.
    I would be heartbroken if I ever had to give up the P-304/M-504. They still look and sound awesome 35 years later. I seriously doubt there is anything you can buy today that is built as well. These old amps are also extremely easy to work on and repair, not that I have ever had to open these. I have repaired a fair number of 1980's era amps and it's usually a simple fix with a $5-$20 part. I have an old Yamaha amp that I did have to open once and wen you look at the build quality of these babies you just want to cry when you see the junk that passes today, even from the so-called high end makers.
    I've always wanted to try hooking the M-504 up to one of my Denon AVRs to see how it would sound driving my Klipsch mains as opposed to the Emotiva, but the damn M-504 must weigh at least 50 pounds and I am not about to carry it upstairs to try it. It's also mounted tightly fit on a nice piece of furniture with little room to reach behind to detach/attach the cables.
    I've seen and owned a fair number of amps over the years and NONE has given me the pleasure in both appearance and sound quality of this pair. If you have an opportunity to buy a used one, even if it doesn't work I would jump on it and have it repaired. If memory serves I paid a good chunk of change on this pair new. In today's dollars I am sure it would run in the multiple thousands and yet I haven't seen anything under $10k that can touch the specs of the P-304/M-504. If memory serves (Ok, I just looked at the manual) the distortion at rated power is a very conservative 165w/ch minimum (+0-1.5db 1Hz to 100kHz) at 0.003% or less. That is just sick! That response curve is like nothing I have ever seen. It has tons of reserve too. I have seen my VU meters nearly peg the 500w mark and I never noticed anything lacking. Bose 901's are rated for unlimited power and this amp always makes those boys work their ports off. The M-504 is one of those rare beauties that will probably be serviceable for a hundred years and certainly would be worth paying $$$ to repair should the need arise.
    Yes, I love them that much.
    Now that I've written this I am in the mood to bring that M-504 upstairs and try driving my home theater mains with it for music with the dual R-115SW's pitching in. That could be spectacular. Then I may have to relegate the Emotiva to basement use. The question then becomes, will my circuit breakers upstairs be able to handle the load since this draws about 4 amps on top of everything else. Now who could I get to carry that up for me?
    ETA
    I was just looking at the service manual for grins and I noticed that each channel's power supply has 72,000 microfarads of capacitors.

    I have these two units which I bought new in the early `80s. They are in mint condition without a scratch and in perfect working order.
    The specs on the M-504 are amazing. Frequency response a stunning 0 - -1.5db from 1hz - 100khz, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of only 0.003% at rated 165w per channel power from 20-20khz and the same at 1w output. Signal to noise ratio 100db. This piece alone weighs in at 50lbs.
    The specs o n the P-304 pre-amp are eve more amazing. Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) - Phono 0.0008%, CD-TAPE-TUNER-LINE all 0.0005%, all at 3 volts output. Frequency response 0 - -3db from 0.8hz TO 170khz. Signal to noise ratio 110db.
    Those are utterly sick numbers.
    My new $1500 Denon is rated at 125w x 2ch @ 8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz with 0.05 % THD, 10 Hz - 100 kHz - +1- -3 dB. Not even close to these old gems. Signal to noise ratio 102db. The new Denon poops out with 6ohm or less speakers with a THD of 0.7%. Ouch!
    To buy something of this quality today would cost you at least $10k. Made in Japan back when everything was hand built with top quality components pride. Mine will stay in the family when I depart this world. A true vintage classic. Just this month (July 2019) I saw a BROKEN M-504 sell from the Salvation Army for $670. Sold for parts only.

    I've watched a lot of video's with high powered amp's that have watt meter's...apparently, no one need's more than 50 watts as I've never seen a watt meter reach a higher value. Make no mistake, I love this amp and amp's like it. But why doesn't the meter move more?

    • @martyjewell5683
      @martyjewell5683 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mark, good question. First off you should know that these meters are (usually) designed to register 8 ohm loads. If your speakers are 4 ohm then you should double the reading. Some amps do have adjustments to make meters move more with less watts. There are amps with switchable power meters. I probably didn't explain this too well but I hope you get the idea.

    • @jewllake
