Radu Lupu is absolutely magnificent here; I would say he's really in his element, performing the Brahms First Piano Concerto. I have never heard such depth, sonority, and such magisterial Romanticism from any other pianist performing this piece. The orchestra is also exceptionally great. Bravissimo, Radu Lupu!

Thank you for this better quality video. I went to hear Radu Lupu perform this concerto in August of that same year at the Proms with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. Unforgettable playing. I heard him play it again at the Barbican with Colin Davis and the LSO in 2002 and Lupu played it even more poetically. It was so unforced. It was sublime. He was so extraordinary in his most inspired state that few can ever match. Great.

The middle movement of this concerto is so utterly soulful nostalgic graceful. It’s atmosphere is almost painfully elegiac with discerning piercing poetry and arching perfect in its soaring trajectory of light and shadow. Where did Brahms conceive such psychological fabric to weave and spin is truly worthy of the word AWESOME! PWG

Radu Lupo looks, sits and maybe plays like Johannes Brahms in this concert. Really a fantastic interpretation ! Lupu plays with enormous depth, complex romantic like in Wagner opera, great colors, control and much power. Overall this concerto is one of the most challenging, not only in technique but more in a intellectual way and philosophy. In this music is so much conflict, sorrow, battle and finally there is the victory of humanity. It is the victory of human spirit and human singularity. In 1859 in Leipzig the result of the concert was unsuccessful. Because this music is very challenging for the people. Conductor Pekka Sarasate and his orchestra are great, they playing Brahms romantic like Tschaikowsky or Wagner with so much sensibility and without any tension or cramp. The music is flowing like free energy.

Yes, exactly, I was stunned also of the similarity of stance - or bearing while sitting, and leaning to the piano-between Lupu and Brahms. Alas, of the second, we have only fix images, but it's pleasant to believe that he sounded the same, with the same deep intensity, and grave benevolence.

Finland has provided an astonishing number of great orchestra conductors ... all with hard to pronounce (for me) names :-) Radu Lupu is excellent in this interpretation, making Brahms "talk" ... in my sense, Brahms music has often the tone of conversation, with generous phrases, and Radu Lupu enhances this "conversational" interpretation. It is a pity that the video recording has some glitches and the sound is not optimal, but all in all thanks for posting this interesting performance.

I don't think there has ever been anyone to compare with Lupu. This is a treasure, the deepest performance I've ever heard of this astounding music. And the FRSO under Saraste seems to really rise to the occasion. There's another Lupu performance (six years later) of the Dm concerto on TH-cam, but the orchestra/conductor are very disappointing. But Lupu still has this amazing authority, emotional depth & openness.

What would we know today about Socrates if Plato had not been born?
What would we know today about a Brahms if a Radu Lupu had not been born?
Maybe just some more or less approximate noises.
Radu Lupu (Radu Wolf, in Romanian) was not a genius, but just an ordinary Romanian, who, like the ”peasants” Brancusi and Cioran, did his duty to mankind and God, sincerely saying what he felt and believed.

Have enjoyed this music for many years now but have just listened to it for the first time using Sony's XM10003 Ear Buds. Blissful.
