  • With "CHESSIE SYSTEM, The Final Days Part I" being a success, here is a PART II. There will be a PART III if this one is a success.
CSXT is a reality in 1988, and power from all the joined railroads is showing up everywhere. This clip, Part II, is nothing but pure Chessie painted locomotives. Some already have been patched with small CSXT decals on the cab.
Here is the link to the successful PART 1

I wasn't born or thought of in 89, but I sure would have love to have been around for this. I didn't get to see the end of Chessie but least I can say I saw the end of Conrail. Railroading will never be like it once was so long ago...
Nice video. Thank you for sharing.

I saw the Chessie System trains up close in West Virginia, so exciting to see when we were kids.

I will not shed a tear for CR. Come to ohio and indiana and see first hand what became of the EL west end.
even ATSF was interested in buying it, but CR did not want the competition.
the number of torn up lines in ohio and indiana is AMAZING.
the first trains i photoed were penn central. so i saw CR from the very beginning.
as for chessie, ,,,,, at least chessie was more colorful than the blotched out PC/RDG/LV/EL/CNJ locos.
the big problem i have with chessie is that they scrapped all but 1 of the WM F units.
WM babied the F units, they were in great shape.(for F units)
btw, i photoed the 7163 and 7173 on their last freight run(coal)to baltimore in preparations for their assignment on the NRHS national convention (1979)in baltimore. video here is a couple days after i photoed them.
      th-cam.com/video/XuedDc0omig/w-d-xo.html
      railfanning today sucks,,,plain and simple.
I know a guy who is 86 years old. when I was photoing in 1976, he had already mostly quit railfanning/photoing trains.
      why you ask?
because the chessie system had retired the last of the B&O F units the year before.
today there is so little variety.
If you want a heads up,,,,
photo as much CSX as you can.
      CSX is in terminal decline.
CSX employee morale is in the toilet.
that which can not survive, will not.
I always have my slides of trains from a long time ago.

1989, in the area I lived was so depressing. By that time, CSX had removed the tracks of the former B&O St. Louis-Balitmore main.

I grew up watching early CSX as kid in the 80s and remember a number of Chessie units leading trains through Danville IL on the C&EI so this brings back some fond memories as lived with eye site of the rails.

Still waiting on that part III! Man, I was born too late for stuff. I’d do anything to go back. The days were the engines sounded cool, railroads, even the class I’s, still had character, and no money was being wasted on PTC

    JP writing this...
My father grew up a block away from the c&o shop in Huntington WV during the late C&O days and chessie. It would have been awesome if he taken pictures let alone film. He just didn’t think about it, way it goes.
But as I was born in 2004, I never got to see a whole lot. I wish I could have seen the good old days...
... not that there’s anything wrong with Norfolk southern ;)

Great that these videos exist. Too bad the resolution isnt all that good. The guy running the camera did not know how and when to use the camera zoom. Many screens showed too much background, and the subject matter was too far away for too long. When the locos came close, the camera followed the lead loco. Oh boo! Follow the last loco down the track. At times watching this guy's Chessie videos was annoying knowing that they could have been much better.
