I never really cared much for Hey Dude even though I watched a whole lot of it, but I am excited for what is on the horizon. I also appreciate the show more after seeing this - I never realized it was the first Nick sitcom, or that it handled native issues so well for the era.
Anyway, I'm super stoked. We're really in the era of "my Nickelodeon" now. I genuinely hope Nick Knacks explodes as it enters the 90s. It deserves to. This is the best series on TH-cam.

I got a little misty eyed when you talked about this ending the 1980s era if Nick. It's a pretty powerful way to contextualize the show cause it does cross over the decades. It bridges those two eras perfectly.

I was seemingly right in the intended age group for Hey Dude back in 1989 and liked it a lot, along with Nick's other two big comparable live action shows Salute Your Shorts and Pete and Pete. As a kid I always assumed it was meant to cover multiple summers, explaining why characters left and returned. I also liked when Ted came back because I enjoyed his character more than Kyle or Jake, even though as an adult I completely agree that it ruined the gravitas of his leaving and that the reasons given for his return were stupid. His love/hate dynamic with Brad was entertaining and this might have been the first romantic relationship I was interested in watching.

Although Joe Torres is technically politically/ethnically a Mexican-American, and has a Spanish surname, many Mexicans are primarily of indigenous descent. He may not be descended from a tribe from what is now the US, or have any legal tribal affiliation which qualifies him as a Native American under US statute, he's definitely of indigenous descent. While there are many legal Native American actors who probably could have filled the role, I don't think his casting was out of place.

    • @supergenkilife
      @supergenkilife 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

I agree. There is a nuance here that cannot be distilled into the remark about how it "isn't great" that a Mexican-American was cast in the role. I think that assessment is this episode conflates ethnicity and geopolitics. Torres has native blood.

Holy Moley! At 4:20 he's reading Jason Ritter, Toyboy issue 2 from Continuity Comics. The actual plot line of that issue is that a group of mercenaries break into a research lab/weapons lab, and accidentally stumble over a Para-Military group's plans to kidnap the Main Character(who is pretty much a ten-year-old Tony Stark). They decide to kidnap him instead, for his own protection.
Nobody's plans go well, as the kid has a trailer full of tech including a robot helper. He ends up calling out the exoskeleton that you see on the cover, it comes out the Para-Military group was actually hired by Jason/Toyboy's father so he could do a dirty weapons deal... and... well, it's complicated, but very much not about alien worms.
The other guy is reading an X-Force comic, but I didn't get a good look at the cover, so I can't tell you which issue it was.

The most anticipated Nick Knacks episode since Double Dare. Hey Dude premiered just over a month before Saved By The Bell did on NBC. Everybody talks about Clarissa Explains It All, Welcome Freshmen, Salute Your Shorts, etc. But, Hey Dude's success paved the way for those shows and the other Nick sitcoms that came later on. Just a little nitpick, there is a good chance that Joe Torres has a native American heritage since states like Arizona use to be part of Mexico not that long ago, native American is an umbrella term for a lot of people whit distinct looks and cultures that don't reflect modern borders, but hey at least they didn't got an Italian.

Hot damn--your conclusion for this episode is so beautifully stated, and it really tees it up for the next decade in the best way! I didn't realize that you occasionally go out of chronological order, but your rationale for doing so makes perfect sense and I really like that you closed out the ‘80s with the true transitional show that clearly pulled from the decade but also signaled the creative direction the network would take in the next one.
I adored Hey Dude as a kid--I was right in that targeted age group that they were going for, and they nailed it perfectly on the head. (Don’t forget that Breyer horses became A Thing around this time too, so it felt like a perfect storm!) I totally shipped Brad and Ted well before I understood what that meant and was so bummed when he left and loved the messiness he brought when he came back…but in retrospect, he was an egotistical garbage human. I didn’t realize how amazing Jake was until I watched this again--he definitely was the best addition to the cast, hands-down.

Hell the building that houses these classes is called "The Bagwell Building", and there's a Bar None Ranch sign and a couple of props from the show on display in the building, along with some old brodcast stuff and even a Club Music sign, which is some really old Country Music show from the 1980s on The Nashville Network. I remember Hey Dude more for the theme song as a kid than anything else. As a kid, I found it boring. As I watched it more on The 90s are All That, I found it a decent show and kind of funny and goofy. Ted reminds me of Kirk Cameron from Growing Pains as Mike Seaver. Both good-looking, yet selfish, immature, and egotistical.
I actually was able to connect with Joe Torres on Facebook during my college years. We talked on the phone back in 2011 and he actually lives in Arizona working at a bar. He sounds a lot different, his voice was much deeper now as an adult. He mentioned the rumors about him being dead and quickly corrected those. Nice guy and very down to earth.
I enjoy all of these Nick Knacks videos and can't wait for the videos about the 90s shows I grew up with. Greg is doing a great job with all of these. I can tell he does his homework and research. His commentary is great too.

The Native American issues that the show brought isn't the first time such a thing happened. The was a second season episode of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids in which a new kid named Johnnie moves in the neighborhood and tells the gang that he's a Hobie, like the character Danny that Joe Torres plays in Hey Dude. However, due to the gang's exposure to Indians from all of the matinee cowboy vs Indian movies they've been watching previously judging Indians or other indigenous natives as inferior, they seem to disbelieve Johnnie's capabilities in such traits that he can play sports, read books, and lives an active life as opposed to be relegated to perform rain dances, tell stories around a campfire and whatever the gang looked at Indians from the movies. In the end with the advice of their teacher, the gang goes to the library and take out some books that detail the truth on Indians and their true culture that the media fails to represent thus learning more about Johnnie's Hobie culture a lot better than before. And that was what this show tried to do somewhat is to show that we've been so blown away from the media on our Native Americans that we fail to realize the real deal on that the true first Americans were not the Pilgrims but the Indians themselves and that everything that Danny mentioned in the series has been opened all this time but we keep putting them in the closet for later. Why are will still celebrating Columbus Day after the truth has been revealed on how he treated Native Americans? We should be saluting our Native Americans more over Columbus. After all, they were the ones that greeted the Pilgrims, which didn't consist of those of Italian origin, not to judge them in Columbus' perspective, but they were completely misguided by his legacy. Therefore, it is important that even the lesser known tribes as well as all indigenous natives should definitely have a place in history and like those who served our country, should never be forgotten. Sure the past was a mistake, but we can prevent that from learning from our mistakes and move in the right direction.

The episodes of this show I remember the most are the one with Angie the troublemaker, the one where they were feeding Mr. Ernst mashed carrots thinking he was ill (it was instructions for a horse), one of the girls in the Miss Bar None contest, and the one where two of them got handcuffed together and argued over which way to sleep. [edit: TED AND BRAD, yes]
I was always more a Salute Your Shorts kid, myself.

I loved Hey Dude growing up, and even at my age of 41, I still watch episodes, as I have all of them in Amazon Prime. That being said, I’m surprised that the target age was 8-10, as that seemed young. I don’t recall if I watched Hey Dude at that age, or more as a preteen/early teen when they aired the reruns.

I'm surprised from the comments that some people considered this show boring. But when I think about it I was exactly in that 8 to 10 range they talk about. Just on the cusp of preteenhood and beginning to put away my ninja turtles and whatnot and getting more interested in the complexities of more adult interactions. I even have a distinct memory of my mom asking me what it was that made me like the show so much. Not In a derogatory way but like she was genuinely curious. I don't remember my answer but I think she sussed out there was something somewhat significant in the fact I loved it so much.

One of my favorite things about Hey Dude was just watching the backgrounds. The other “guests” walking around the ranch. The wind blowing the plants. Just the breathtaking scenery. Solid storytelling and characters as well.

When I think of Hey Dude, one thing immediately jumps out at me: *HIGH RISE JEANS.* I never thought anything of it back then since I never really cared about fashion, but years later, it's the biggest thing I notice anytime I see anything about this series. I'd go as far as to say it's as much a contributor to the show's texture as the rugged sets and windswept branches.
Also, is it just me, or did teen actors look older in the 80s? Or did having so many young adults play teens back then just break my brain?

Born and raised in Tucson AZ and loved "Hey Dude". Around 1997-1998, I was 17 and my brother and I swear that Joe Torres (Danny) was working at a Walmart. We never had the nerve to ask him if he was "Danny", because he had a few arm tats and never seemed very happy. Was a few pounds heavier than "Danny" but it was several years after the show ended. It wasn't until years later I learned that nobody really knows what happened to Torres, thus making our theroy even more plausable. I really wish that I would have asked that guy if he was Torres.

The theme song for this show as buried deep in my memory and retained in full. Felt weird to know all the words to it after not seeing it since it aired. Kid me absolutely loved this show though. It had that good mix of being silly, serious, and having unique enough characters that it'd keep kids of my age at the time attentive. Hopefully Joe Torres is doing well today but being able to get away from absolutely everything about acting after you're done is admirable if it was done of his own accord.

I remember watching Hey Dude back in the day. I don't remember a lot of the episodes, but I remember liking it and seeing how it was filmed on location really gives the scenery much more life than it would have on a sound stage. I think it's also fitting to describe this as the bridge between the 80's and 90's Nick. I saw the series only through reruns in the 90's, so despite when it really started, it always felt more like a 90's series to me. I'm really curious to hear more about 90's Nickelodeon since there are a lot of really good shows during that era of the channel.
