Poirot delves into a complex web of clues involving a mysterious phone call, a gold case with a misleading inscription, and several potential suspects including Jane's resentful former lover, Bryan Martin, and Edgware’s financially troubled nephew, Ronald Marsh.
Using his impeccable deductive skills, Poirot uncovers that Jane Wilkinson, driven by the motive to marry the duke who would not wed a divorcee, orchestrated a deceptive plan. She employed Carlotta Adams to impersonate her at the dinner party while she herself committed the murder. Moreover, Jane later killed Adams to silence her and manipulated evidence to mislead the investigation.
