Yulestar very nearly completed a great treble this season. He won the NZ Cup/ID Final double and was just beaten by Flight South up the passing lane in the Auckland Cup. Cardigan Bay did this treble in 1963, and to my knowledge no other horse has done it.
I was at the final and went to the heats. Attitagain looked so strong during that series, Dennis Wilson had him firing on all cylinders. Poor drive by Brian Hancock on Courage Under Fire who still managed 4th even though he was caught 3 wide for as long as he was. Great finish by the winner Yulestar.
Hot headed drive by Dennis Wilson. He had the leader and trailing horse covered and the horse in the 1-1 was flat. If he waits just a few seconds longer then the gaps wouldn’t have come in time for Yulestar. Impatience and adrenalin cost him.
Yeah, but it's okay from the vantage point we had and in hindsight, not so from where Dennis was sitting during the race. Honestly had I been him I would have probably done the same. That was a great series and final.
I watched this spectacle live at the Courtney place TAB, wellington, 2001. Yulestar was so cool, I knew one of the family member connected to him; complete and utter kiwiana.

What a shocking call. Announcing Dennis was home
I think Greg was referring to the 'Dennis Wilson is looking for his finest moment in Harness Racing' part of the call
Its David Fowler calling whos Greg?
