An early Kata, formerly known as Hanshu. The form we have today is shaped by the revisions made by Yasutsune Itosu. The name was changed by Master Funakoshi. The name Empi (also sometimes written as Enpi)was chosen for being descriptive of the erratic and unsteady flight of a swallow. This is reflected by the up-and-down, forward-and-backward movement patterns within the Kata.
Empi is composed of 37 movements which take around one minute to perform.
