    The thing about the rosin flux is that it can be safely out of sight, out of mind, when it seeps under the chip. Some No-clean fluxes are intended for reflow ovens and are actually corrosive without a full heat cycle to activate the flux.

      I’ve had solid black screens usually those are dead CPUs solid blue is quite unique, I did have a console that was giving me a blue screen when I cleaned it with alcohol it than gave me a black screen once the alcohol dried.

    So leaving residue from no clean tacky flux is a no-no?

    • @rubenmejia4881
      @rubenmejia4881 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Usually if you have a no clean flux it shouldn't be a problem, but for the sake of cheap insurance cleaning it off always helps because some fluxes can cause voltage leaks or interference even when they say it's okay to leave it behind. For that reason I always clean because I don't trust any flux! Also for cleanliness it's a peace of mind to eliminate any doubts.

    • @rubenmejia4881
      @rubenmejia4881 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The good thing about the old school rosin after it cools down and solidifies it acts as a insulator so if any liquid damage happens and it's covered in rosin then the chip is most likely safe. Rosin is also way easier to clean all you need is ipa alcohol. No clean fluxes were designed to be left on the board and can be a nightmare to clean off. The best way to clean off no clean is after it's heat up, wipe up as much as you can with a napkin or paper towel q tips as much as you can then use ipa alcohol but while it's hot. If you do it cold it's going to leave a mess everywhere.

    To remove the flux under ic, I use the hot air at about 160 celsius and air at max. That way the flux from under the ic will exit and you can clean it.

    This may be a dumb question but is there any chance the chip wasn't bad but just had a bad solder joint somewhere?

  • @makedaevilmage
    @makedaevilmage 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hey thanks for making your vids! I bought 3x SNES to repair but I'm not sure how to even go about it. One has a black screen but does have audio, one seems to have some weird texture issue (really noticable in F-zero) and one with what seems corrupted/glitced textures. Judging from watching your video's, the black screen might be a bad cpu? And the other two a bad PPU chip? Colors seem to be fine tho, so most likely not an S-rbg chip problem, right?
    Perhaps I should try to get a hold of a Nintendo snes burn-in cartridge as well. Thanks again mate!

    • @PunkNDisorderlyGamer
      @PunkNDisorderlyGamer  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@makedaevilmage yeah if you’re trying to do these repairs often, get yourself a burn in test cart off aliexpress. The black screen might be capacitors (since you’re getting sound). Try to test with the RF port to see if it gives an image, if so try swapping the caps. The others with corrupt graphics could be a bad PPU, VRAM, or even a bad CPU.
      I just acquired a box maybe 20-25 snes boards and I’m currently repairing them, so I’ll be getting more fixes on my channel this week. Perhaps one of my repairs will be the same as one of yours and it can help you out.

    I am having a similar problem with an 001 snes. Already swap s-enc, recap all of it, but still get green all over the another colors. Insteresting thing is that after 5 minutes playing the colors back to normal. I wonder if that's could be the ppu 2 as well, or something else in the video circuit. What do you suggest?

    • @PunkNDisorderlyGamer
      @PunkNDisorderlyGamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try reflowing the ppu chips and cpu. You might have an intermittent fault on one of the PPU chips that pertain to RGB and color. To be honest I’m not really sure what’s wrong. Try the RF port and RGB cables to narrow the problem down a bit more. If I had to guess it’s not a broken trace it’s probably a bad or failing chip.

      @@PunkNDisorderlyGamer I Just swap the ppu2 yesterday and it works fine. Now it shows APU BB, sometimes OO failure on test cartridge, I tried other apu and I get the same error.
