I will say that the US military recruits young, poor US citizens, and people of color and they do it on purpose. Their recruitment offices are often in poor neighborhoods and they recruit right out of high school. They play recruitment commercials between cartoons and shows for teens! When we meet her family, it really makes sense why a young person like her joined the military. She was really poor plus her family has a military background. I remember the military used to recruit in the hallway of my high school, which is an inner city school with many students of color. They would visit our classrooms and make a presentation. During the presentation, I raised my hand and asked if the presenting soldiers had killed anyone (my teacher was PISSED at me😂!!!!) and they responded, "when you are on the battle field it's either you or them." I am glad I asked because students need to know that the "free tuition" comes at the high price of going to war! The military starts training you before you leave high school. You can fully enlist when you are 18 (you can't drink in this country until you are 21 and you can't rent a car until you are 25 in this country!). If you are a young person and want to expedite your US citizenship, join the military. If you feel like you can't afford college, join the military. If you are poor and have no where to go, join the military - you'll get a bed and three meals a day in basic training. Have no direction in life, join the military. Have a criminal record and can't get a job, join the military. The US military tricks, brainwashes, and traps you. They promise you a life time of benefits that may take you many years to receive. I had a classmate in college that got deployed mid semester and had to drop out. It is extremely complex issue and for her to have come this far and speak on her stance is actually pretty big. Ramses is actually not the greatest partner for other things he does in these episodes.... like his stance on wanting her to be on birth control so he doesn't have to use a condom shows he's not as socially aware as he thinks he is.

I think the military conversation, like he knew she was in the military, but hearing her say I don’t regret it, I will not ashamed if it, I am proud of my service, I would talk to my kids about it, etc.. all things she said in some episodes.. I think these are the things that had him pull away. I don’t think he knew how much she was still okay with the military, when she portrayed herself very much as moved away from that side of things.
I understand the circumstances that put underprivileged people in the military believe me, I am from a Mexican family in an extremely impoverished area and tons of my family have gone and died in the military, but this doesn’t negate the harm of the military industrial complex and I am tired of these predatory practices being used as excuses or “nuance”.
Put it in the context if today.. imagine an IDF soldier talking to a Palestinian and look them in the eye and saying they are not ashamed of, do not regret, and are proud if their service.. and that is because Israel has mandatory military, they truly do not have a choice.
That is essentially Marissa, a us soldier, talking to Ramses, a man who came from Venezuela, and saying I am proud of this.

I’m American. For the most part, a white guy as far as anyone can tell from the outside. I was never in the military but I know _every_ aspect of my comfort comes at the cost of someone the Military, that represents me around the world, brutalized so I could have that luxury.
I watch TH-cam videos on a phone with a battery, some kid squatted thigh-deep in purple water in a lithium mine, sorting minerals for. I lay on a mattress made from latex foam harvested by an old man in Southeast Asia who can never afford to stop working. I eat chocolate brought to me because whole families of people have no choice but to pick cocoa they will never have a change to taste.
People sneer about ‘white guilt’ but it’s not that. I live in Omelas but I can’t walk away. It’s Omelas in every direction. But, unlike the utopia of the LeGuin story, America doesn’t offer its own citizens peace either.
I live in an apartment building with roaches and a shared bathroom because rent anywhere else is unaffordable. Cops tear tents down outside my window, reminding me what happens if I fall off the treadmill. I can’t afford to go to the next city much less escape the country. My ‘Freedom’ as a voter is between a criminal of every description and a full-throated genocide supporter.
We’re ground between the knowledge that every nice thing in our lives comes from exploitation and death while also being strong-armed by that same engine to comply.
Capitalism has created a horrifying machine and doesn’t even make the people who directly benefit from it secure or happy.
WHY DOES ALL THIS EXIST IF IT INJURES EVERYONE AND MAKE NO ONE HAPPY!?!
I just want to walk away from Omelas but there is no way out. It’s horror in every direction.

I understand what she is saying as a black person who first hand saw other students fall into the predatory "go to the military poor kid" treatment in highschool (and even in elementary and middle school in some places). It's very predatory and many people sign up just so they have income.
However, she seems confused with her own feelings, as she says she supports the troops (meaning people like her who felt like the military was a valid option for income), but she also defends the current existence of the military force. Those aren't the same, but it's like she feels pressured to defend both for some reason.
Many people who support human rights understand that the military preys on vulnerable communities, and obviously won't be angry at anyone for joining die to them being in a vulnerable position (and they have been fed propaganda their whole lives). But that doesn't mean you have to support the literally military organization.
You can acknowledge that you joined the military out of a combination of valid reasons and you benefitted financially from it, but you regret it at the end of the day because you hurt people, and you don't wish anyone else to support the military and it's actions. But she is acting like that's impossible. She did choose to join and she did benefit from that choice. She can also regret it. But it's like she won't let herself regret it.
I'm a university student who joined to become a social worker and to not repeat mistakes that my family made, and to just create financial stability while doing something I enjoy. But I also regret being a university student because my school is literally funded by people who support murder. My school literally undermines the issues that are beign faced by students of color, specifically Middle Eastern students or literally anyone with ties to the mass murders happening. I regret it everyday, but I made the choice for my own reasons. I'm not gonna defend the university or anything, and I'm not going to act like I'm not contributing by going to the school. But I also understand that there are students like me who feel like they have to, and that's not exactly our fault either. Both can exist if she lets it.

And it does feel like if you don’t thank them for their service, you’re seen as rude. There are a lot of layers to the Marissa and Ramses story. "It's not over" because Marissa is still aligned with and a beneficiary of her service if nothing else. As a veteran, she is eligible for healthcare and her law school tuition is probably gratis of her service.
Then on a personal level, as she mentioned she has been aligned with the military since she was a toddler and her friends are mostly veterans, as well. I don't think that is about delusion -- it is very true of her experienced. It's easy to think of this that way when you have been able to keep your hands clean -- then there is no conflict.
Anyway, bigger than her personal enmeshment there is a reason why so many of the contestants are veterans -- Marissa eludes to it when she talks about her story. She mentioned how her mother encourages her to enlist as her best option.
The reality is that outside of any romanticization, military service is the biggest conduit to opportunities in the country - there are so many benefits to being a service member - housing, education, traiing, travel, waived taxes, advantages in hiring, healthcare even boarding the plane first. And these are major benefits for Americans from states and areas which are depressed with big BIPOC communities. I often think about a country in which there were many other accessilble options.
It's systemic like everything else and bigger than personal choices -- there is a definite pipeline to service and for many people, rationally, it's their best option to have things in life. There are so many areas in the country where pretty much everyone serves. That's not about personal choice so much as it is about systems, which I think is important to consider. Your focus is personal morality and I get it yet I think systems tend to be more puissant.

im native american so im not much of an outsider as my familys been here generations before white folks got here but i think its absolutely wild how well the american propaganda works on POC like?? isnt that crazy that deep down Marissa KNOWS THAT SHES HELPING COMMIT GENOCIDE BUT STILL selfishly wanting her achievements and other people's achievements to be like validated by the nation... and like talking with other soliders, they act like talking about manning ships and tanks is like some kind of nonchalant thing over dinner. like american propaganda really pushes ANY kind of person to remove their empathy and choose this facade of comfort AKA MONEY. like even my own tribe has people in the military and at this point its only to escape poverty but idk i personally believe its a cultural genocide that we end up falling for the sake of said comfort. if our ancestors knew that people were willingly removing their empathy and integrity and strong will to do the right thing all for some kind of nationalistic validation??? i feel like theyre already rolling and have been since the beginning of this country. lol

My goodness this is such a great review of this conversation between Marissa and Ramses. I was so deeply unsettled watching that episode for the first time. Grateful they are allowing us to witness such a tough conversation but DAMN! I do wonder if this will be the deciding factor in their marriage because it's such a strong moral difference. Ramses has to really decide if this is a deal breaker for him or not. And Marissa as well. I don't think I could do it. But again, your breakdown was incredible! Thank you for this ❤

I have complicated feelings about the military, Ukraine/Russia, Palestine/Israel and American Imperialism in general. I will say that its interesting that none of the comments have brought up how the military exploits Americans too. There's a reason why most recruitment centers are in rural and urban areas, never the suburbs. They intentionally go after poor kids who don't have much in the way of options. Do you ever see wealthy kids going into the military? Hardly ever. If you do, they go into officer schools and end up President (looking at you George Bush Jr).
When they come back from dealing death in other countries, the traumatized vets end up screwed by their government too. Not for nothing, a lot of homeless people are vets. I'm not wowed by America. Probably because I'm black 😆 I see her for her works. I just want to level set this convo so people don't walk away thinking American vets have it so easy.

I wish that guy told the girl vet “look, I know you’ve had real and true experiences in the military (like making lifelong friends or having near death experiences, or having your identity forcefully pounded out of you)… but your doubts and wrestling now are also a true experience”. It’s hard to hold those things together.
It sounds honestly like she wants to be able to leave the military and the imperialist mindset behind but she doesn’t want to invalidate all the experiences she’s had and I wish someone could tell her that you can take any good that you’ve learned and leave the bad if you chose to.
I’m super anti imperialism, but the reason I’d approach it is because I used to lead therapy groups and often times if you see someone clearly struggling with if they should leave their old beliefs, the best thing you can do is ask open questions and help them hold their contrary opinions so they can truly talk through them. 99% of the time it actually makes them move towards their new beliefs faster because they feel free to question.

There is something I will never stop saying about evil...
It never presents itself as evil. But as good. Not as chaos, but order. Not as a pathway to violence, but to peace. Not as the wood, but the path that runs through it and out into the field of glory eternal. Where no hedonism remains, and there is only virtue. Beauty, without the contrast of the ugly.
Villainy is always heroism, presented as inarguable and without question.
It lures you in, it gains your confidence, by presenting itself as sexy and noble.
