Well young one, some people do commute/pendulate to work, I even know a person who does that but the difference is it's only 1 hour from here to where she works. Even in the 70's Steve Martin was gray haired until he became white haired years later. There's a deleted scene where the thief first showed up as a pizza delivery guy and he noticed the extra cash they got, hence why he showed up in the middle of the night in their room and stealing the money.
The reason the cop looked at them the way he did is more cut content. originally he had to inform them that they actually overshot chicago and had to go back the way they came.

One of my favorite personal traditions: watching this one on Thanksgiving, (also, watching Ernest Scared Stupid on Halloween). Always a good time.
