Until you commit to the defense, I don't see us going anywhere. So let's just say you play better than average for the next couple of years, and Penix doesn't live up to the hype. Guess what? You won't get another high draft pick anytime soon if you are expecting to make the playoffs now. That pick may come back to haunt us !!!!
If as is stated here that the Falcons this year do indeed have a top 5 offensive line and Bijan is truly ready to ascend into the Marshall Faulk stratosphere (which in fact I do actually see happening) then in my mind it makes the Penix pick even more baffling and extremely problematic. If the o-line holds true then consider that it will be by leaps and bounds the best rated o-line Cousins has ever played with and in fact by the numbers over the last decade he has been the most hit QB on dropbacks in the NFL and yet still manages to be a top 10 caliber QB every year. If he is allowed to just sit in the pocket untouched he will pick any defense apart. It truly could be an MVP level campaign for either him or Bijan if the o-line is as advertised so there is no excuse for not improving the defense with a true game changing edge rusher in a season where they have a legitimate chance. Drafting a guy who if all goes to plan doesn't see the field for at least 2 years and has significant question marks about him (injury history and layering of throws being top of the list) in the short term only serves to limit this team's ceiling and has no guarantee of bringing long standing success. Sure, magic could still happen with this team and/or Penix learns from Cousins how to layer throws and becomes a top QB in a couple years and then everyone will look brilliant but as we all know a team's Super Bowl window opens suddenly and closes just as quickly and Pitts/London/Bijan won't be cheap for long and having to pay those guys could effectively close that window that for right now is firmly open.
You just said if, if ,if, with optimism, but then when you got to Penix it turned negative. Here's an if for you. The people Arthur Blank hired to manage his team know what they're doing and this works out the way they intended?
Penix could also be traded for draft picks and the Falcons just draft another quarterback. Winning franchises can afford to continue drafting quarterbacks and flipping them for useful assets so long as there is someone capable remaining on the roster taking snaps.

Why would it be wise to trade a younger franchise QB and retain an older franchise QB? San Fran let Montana walk and kept Young. Green Bay let Rogers walk and kept Love. Baltimore let Flacco walk and kept Jackson. I don't understand that line of reasoning.
