I suspect she writes a lot . And I do think writing helps her in speaking. Not sure if one can express clearly as she does here without the organized process that can only come from writing. BTW, she is smart and I suspect there is the lineage in her family as well in literature. I have to say Writing is very important. if one can write clearly in her first language, chances are this is person can pick up a second language much quicker.

Children have special ability of learning foreign languages. She started learning from 7years old.
But for adults, it's hard to learn English from listening. Mostly writing is easier. To start reading and writing is good.
When it comes to speaking and writing, the same process happen in your brain first.
When you talk to native speakers, you have to keep up with them. You don't have time to think about grammar. But when you write, you can look up words and expressions you don't know.
So learners who don't write often tend to speak fast, but they tend to not know lots of words and expressions. It means they are bad at listening. It means they are bad at communication lol

your english is so nice to listen to because you speak so articulately. a lot of speakers (at least here in the us and me included haha!) tend to slang up sentences and not put much thought into what we're saying in a way. the best example i could give is that if someone directly quoted me or most people i know talking regularly about the same topics as you, they would sound very simple and uneducated almost. but if they quoted you and i read it in a magazine, i'd think, wow, they're so put together and smart! i always wonder how people sound so eloquent in magazine quotes lmao. maybe that's a whole other ordeal for me. but yeah! it's beautiful, i hope to get to this level of japanese and spanish one day!

Reading books has some utility. It's good for developing a precise vocabulary and, of course, it is essential for written communication. But Koreans, in general, learn through rote methods--specifically this technique of book learning--as part of their coursework. It doesn't help that much with the problem area Koreans experience when they actually encounter strangers: shyness. My sister-in-law went to a Korean college that specialized in language training, for instance, and despite this high level training, my wife, who lives in the States, had to do the work of speaking to a Customer Service Agent when we were long-distance-planning our annual trip.

If you want my professional opinion (I am, in addition to being a native speaker, a one-time university professor of English Literature), movies and television and youtube are going to give you the best bang for your buck. You'll get more out of a newspaper like the New York Times, as the vocabulary comes in short busts--and in clusters--that are thematically grouped. I think Skype Language Exchange is not the best idea...unless you have a sustained, committed language partner. I unfortunately did a language exchange through a now-defunct website. This was for Spanish. And it was not helpful, as people kept on asking me the same clusters of questions each time they were introduced to me. They either marvelled about my amazing level Spanish or they asked me things that are basic, like how many children I have or if I'm married or where I live--all terrain that is pretty basic.

English is also my second language but I spent almost like 10+ years leaning english..and best tip to learn English a bit faster is .. first learn grammar and spelling and making your reading speeds better (that doesn't matter if u don't understand everything)..and then all u have to do is...watch video and movies in english..with subtitles of the language u already know..when u say a word in your language always try to find out that word in english..even while thinking or speaking in your mind do it in english..and to improve fluency the best way is to have convo in english but if u can't find anyone to talk to ..just simple start talking to yourself..stand in front of a mirror and imagine like someone asked you your daily routine..and then explain it ...and u will become fluent in English..and I think english is even easier than my first language now.. :).. fighting to all english learners u can do it!!!!

Excellent work. What a highly inspiring video; it was right on time for me. I've been using the same learning approach for many years. During the last days, I've been trying to make sense of why I prefer to read and write in English instead of Spanish. Most of the content I'm interested in is written or broadcasted in English. My favorite authors write in English also.
Your video helped me to understand my feelings about it better: I find joy while learning, practicing, and improving, so why should I deny it?
    Thank you and best wishes.

Reading is good when you want to enrich your vocabulary. However the best why to learn is just to listen and speak. I'm a native English speaker, but I speak two other languages. Much of the vocabulary gained by reading is only used in writing, also you will likely never hear anyone speak that way.

Wow, seriously your video has made me put some comments. I just learned English as my second language at the age of 26. Of course, in Korean environment, there are lots of wrong ways to approach languages. I was one of the victims. But something inside me kept asking me to keep going on English for a better future in some aspects. Like you said, I am also one of weirdos. Korean society does not accept the way I am. But I'm sort of flexible to any circumstances. So far I've watched tons of how to learn a language, but your videos are sincere and truthful the most. When I got to university in the States, and now work at a Korean company in the States, I lost my spirit toward English. Back there when I was younger, English was the open gate to communicate with the world. I actually made lots of foreign friends from different culture backgrounds. Now I'm the totally opposite. I don't know why I turned to be the opposite. I don't have native friends. A part of me really wants to go back to Korea where I detested to live by stopping what I want to do and giving up my long progress. Your video makes me think a lot in a long time. I really appreciate your experience and thoughts.

Hi Vicky, I've found your channel from your comment post on the Lewis Howes interview with Jay Abraham. I find the concept of English and art is interesting and fresh. I'm from New Zealand and have been here in South Korea for 7.5 years now as a private English teacher. I've always encouraged creativity in English learning and here you sum up the artistic approach so well when you say you use it as a "collaborator" with which to explore your curiosity and creativity, and live a more colorful life. When I look back, without exception every outstanding English of student that I've known has used English in this way, not to merely earn practical benefits. It's the baseline rule, or the turning point for anyone who wants to go from good (or worse) to great as an English user - the desire to be an artist and explorer who uses English as a "collaborator" and form of expression. You speak like a philosopher and I can tell you are very well read, especially from a purpose driven stand-point. Yet you are easy to understand. Great work and voice, keep it going and keep it growing. Where in South Korea do you live?

It is interesting that what English means to you, Korean is to me. I started learning Korean a while ago and, even though I wouldn't say I am a complete beginner, my skills are quite basic yet. However, I am eager to keep going because I am doing it for myself by myself; it's probably the only thing I love and I'm doing with such a passion. Hearing all you said in this video inspired me even more. It was the push that I needed becaise lately I've been so tired of work and everything. And who knows, someday I may even send you a letter in Korean ;d 감사합니다 ♡♡

Your speaking is good. You remind me of when I was learning English from a teacher. He advised students to learn only English and computer. Every student committed themself to learning only English, and most students can speak fluently excluding me. However, many years later, I found out that English skill alone is not enough. We also need to learn general and domain knowledge to better our English skill.

This is how I feel about learning Korean, even though I'm kicking myself for not learning it over 20 years ago 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️. I really wish I had a Physical person to help me learn. I started learning Korean on the terms of how we learn our Mother Language when we're babies learning new words and on into sentences. That is the easiest way for me, even though I still have a long way to go. I'm thankful that Hangul doesn't have all the punctuation that English does! 😁
As for learning English as a second or so language, whomever is driven enough to even speak broken English enough to get through a conversation, would be fine. Just make sure you, "you" being the general person, learn words that are familiar overall, or specific to the place you will be speaking English the most. If you are learning how to write English, don't worry about all the punctuation until you have a firm grasp on the language. Thankfully, a lot of Native Speakers will mostly, if not fully, understand what you are trying to say--- written or spoken. Stick with it and it will be rewarding and be persistent will be key. ☺️
That's probably the best advice I can give someone learning English.
And be aware that you Might have an English teacher in your school who will only teach British English and not Worldly English.
