    My monitor must be different than some others. They're talking about things being unreadable, yet I noticed no issue at all? Aside from that, I did have a question that others have asked as well: where are absolute values used outside of math problems? Do physics applications use them, for example, in astronomy calculations or relative speed equations?

    Solution:
    The absolute value function gives the distance to 0. And since distances are always positive we have two cases:
    x < 0 → |x| = -x
    x ≥ 0 → |x| = x
    (1)
    |100| + |-100|
    = 100 + 100
    = 200
    (2)
    | |-8 + 3| + (2 - 8) |
    = | |-5| + (-6) |
    = | 5 - 6 |
    = |-1|
    = 1
    (3) (almost unreadable on the first page in the video, because of the white space between |, - and 9. It looks like 1 - 9 + 21 at first glance)
    | (2 - |2 - 4|) - | -9 + 2| |
    = | (2 - |-2|) - |-7| |
    = | (2 - 2) - 7 |
    = | 0 - 7 |
    = |-7|
    = 7

    So without watching your video I’d say 200. Since we want to know the farthest point on a number line from zero is 200 since absolute values can’t describe the farthest distance on a number line, and in this context distance can’t be negatives.

    You can think of absolute value as distance from 0. -100 and 100 are both 100 away from 0. Edit and then that was mentioned 10 seconds later haha.

      @ go into a bank and pay in -100 dollars … clue: conceptualising nonsense doesn’t make it make sense.

    • @davepowder4020
      @davepowder4020 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@LysanderLH But simply because you don't like that your bank account registers -500 dollars, doesn't mean that the bank is going to simply wipe out the number, just because someone says that negative numbers are nonsense. They still can legally demand that you balance the account with 500 dollars.

    • @LysanderLH
      @LysanderLH 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ Take 500 beans. Now remove 1 bean at a time until 1 bean is left. You would agree that you have removed 499 beans and now you have 1 bean. Now carry on and remove another 501 beans …. how many beans did you physically remove and how many beans are left?

    • @davepowder4020
      @davepowder4020 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@LysanderLH In the case of your credit card and the bank, you asked someone who had the additional beans to allow you to use those beans for your purposes, under the agreement that you would provide that many beans back to the lender. In the case of money, a contractual obligation creates the negative number situation.
      In physics, positive and negative charges can be represented as positive and negative numbers. A proton or positron is positively charged, while an electron or anti-proton is negatively charged. Accounting for these differences is necessary in order to have something like electricity be made functional for intended purposes.
