Hi hand good morning I like you do think the mainline steam loco are ok I buy them off eBay nonrunners to repair mostly the problems are need of quartering and gluing on the split axles, but if you have a problem with broken ones you can buy these from Peter spares, for I think £ 4 -90 This is not a big job. If you know what you’re doing. Just have a go set one side either at 3 o’clock and the other 12 o’clock that’s a certain I do and I work okay. I hope this helps your subscribers also I like your layout looks good. Many thanks, Colin.
@@colinsuffolk9161 Hi and good morning to you also Colin . To be honest the split axel problems are not really the achillies heel of these mainline model’s , it’s the motor and gearing . The wheels are nice to look at but extremely poor quality and are pitted . Super glue is a must for all mainline steam loco’s including tank engines as it’s a universal issue with the split plastic axels as we all know . Thanks for your feedback Colin , the layout is sadly long gone , I have as you’ll see a small layout now . Best regards , Richard .
@@Richardsrailway I Richard thanks for getting back to me I have stripped down my locos taken all of the valve gears and also the motor gears and cleaned all internals bushes Springs split the chassis replaced the axles with new ones if needed. Also I have a Ronald Dodds re-magnetiser sometimes the mainline lose the strength in the magnets. I just re-magnetite the magnets put it all back together they run very well I only run three coaches on my lay out it’s only 8ft but 6ft also I have changed it now to hornby dublo I convert a locos to run on three rail I hope this helps. Many thanks, Colin.
I certainly agree with you on most points but I find there is something captivating about these locos. Yes, they are noisy and no they are not very responsive but I love ‘em and have bought quite a few - eBay refugees if you will, and like the challenge of getting them running again if non-running when purchased. Obviously they aren’t up to scratch against newer Hornby models simply because of their motors but I find one can handle 10 or more coaches without much of a problem. How did the tender-drive conversion go by the way? th-cam.com/video/41f58Zda3q8/w-d-xo.html
Tony Steel yes I agree , molding wise they are pretty decent , The Achilles’ heel with the mainline stuff is their plastic axels that that are split . They tend to break and cause the quartering to go out of sync and damage the con rods , super glue does the trick , motor wise they are a let down . Yes the tender drive went well . Stay safe , regards Richard

You can buy replacement split axels from Peters Spares for these engines.
I keep looking at a Mainline LMS Jubilee for a good price on eBay but I never buy it
