Dad had one of these back in the day: Lapis blue with beige leather 5 spd. Compared to other family cars in the 80’s it felt like a rocket ship

What I would give to have one of these. This is one of the most favorite body styles of BMW ever to me. BMW needs to go back and make this car exactly as it was then with no changes. I would drive one in a heartbeat.

This engine has 125bhp at only 4200 rpm and good low end torque, very nice to drive with great in gear acceleration.

Back when BMW focused on building the best driving cars in the world, not making disposable leasing machines that charge you monthly to use features the car already has. 🙄

My favorite gen 5 Series. It nay not be the best looking or most aerodynamic car, but they are great fun. Plus the power seats have near endless adjustments.

You were the shit yuppie if you had one of these in 1982!

Much better acceleration than I've expected considering this car isn't all that powerful, it does seem to poop out at higher speeds, braking performance while very good isn't much better than most family sedans of the era.

BMWs M20B27 has (near) the reliability of Mercedes W123 diesels however fun to drive and better performance with the smoothness which bested BMWs more expensive M30B34 in the 535i/is 6 and 7 series vehicle’s of the time. I always felt the 528e was let down by it’s looks compared to Mercedes 300e since it lingered in the US through 1988. That being said I find far more old 528e vehicles readily available for sale in 2023.

A pity they never tested the 535i/is. I DD an '88 is and owned several old 5s, an E30 and a tii. But it took forever to even find this one... searched everywhere but found it by accident on roadtestjunkie.

Oh, duh, now I get it. The female assistant is supposed to be dressed in Oktoberfest gear.

I don´t know what kind of bs this 528e? is, but the usual 528i was the sh*t back in the days. 185bhp, 0-100 in 8,4 and 215km/h was quite rapid for a sedan at the time.

It was a model equipped with a low revving high torque engine with high gearing.
It gave good acceleration at low to medium speeds combined with good fuel economy.
The 528i you are describing was also available but that model was equipped with a high-revving engine and shorter gearing and appealed to the more aggressive sporting driver.

Look at the stupid American bumpers, trying their best to spoil the looks of the car, so many cars from anywhere other than America seemed to have to suffer this

e - stands for economy in 528e. The idea was that this engine was made to be low end torque oriented, like diesels or truck gasoline engines. Not quite, but similar.

Indeed. Even Consumer Reports complained about the lazy throttle response, but at least it got very good mileage for the day.

      You definitely needed a 535i.
