      The Germans knew the Danes were going to surrender, actually. The Danish government had made it clear that they had no intention to fight, as they had refused to mobilise the army, despite the Danish intelligence service having overwhelming evidence that an attack was brewing. This was because a party called Radikale Venstre was in charge of Danish foreign- and defence policy. Radikale Venstre was founded as an anti-militarist party in opposition to the pro-military Venstre and very pro-military Højre / Konservative Folkeparti. During World War I the Foreign Minister (who was from Radikale Venstre as well) had made a deal with the Germans: The government would allow the Germans to occupy Jutland if Denmark was allowed to remain independent. The King would not have allowed this in 1917, and thus Denmark would've fought had Germany invaded then. However, in 1940 the King had lost much of his power, and the plan of the Radikale Venstre ministers was thus suddenly workable.
      P. Munch, the Radikale Venstre Foreign Minister of 1940, did not make a deal with the Germans like his predecessor Erik Scavenius (though there have always been conspiracy theories that he did). What he did do, however, was conduct a policy that effectually made it clear to the Germans that Denmark would not defend itself, if the country was allowed to remain independent.

      @@gustav331 Is that why so many Jews were kept safe in Denmark until 43 or 44?

    • @gustav331
      @gustav331 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@frederickoftheartic2209 Yes. The quick Danish surrender meant that the Germans allowed Denmark to exist as an independent country with its own government. The Danish Army, Navy and Air Force was even allowed to exist alongside the German occupation forces until August 29th in 1943. The army's size was limited by the Germans, though. The German occupation was presented not as a hostile occupation, but as a 'peace occupation'. Very few Danes actually believed this German spin on events, though, and hostility to the Germans was always rife. Resistance therefore grew steadily, and in 1943 the Germans enforced martial law and attacked the army's garrisons in Operation Safari. Later the entire Danish police force, 10.000 men, was hunted down and deported to concentration camps because of the police's high level of involvement with the resistance. Many policemen managed to go underground and avoid deportation, however. The Danish underground army was thus one of largest per capita in occupied Europe by the end of World War II, numbering around 50.000 men.

      @@gustav331 great summary! Thank you! I read Mark Mazower’s “Hitler’s Empire” and Adam Tooze’s “The Wages of Destruction,” but they kinda treat Denmark like an extraordinary footnote so to speak. They talk about how Denmark’s economy faired pretty well in WWII since the Germans didn’t requisition that much food or factory material. As such, Denmark still had a “thriving” economy and got through the war mostly in good order. I do not believe there was even a major food shortage in Denmark like in Greece and Amsterdam (2 non-Slavic examples)

      The Danish Army wasn't mobilised, so there very few troops ready for combat. The government had also refused to let the army dig in or make defences. The few that were at the border were thus conscripts who hadn't finished basic training, and they hadn't even been allowed to make preparations.
      The Danish Army would've counted 94.000 men if it had been fully mobilised. That was actually the most per capita of any Scandinavian country, extraordinarily enough.

    • @gustav331
      @gustav331 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@freskom Sweden had, if fully mobilised, a force of only 130.000 men in 1940. The army had six divisions plus local defence forces. The largest infantry formation in Skåne on the 9th of April 1940 was a Danish company that had crossed the Sound to fight on. Sweden only had a population of 6 million in 1940, so it would have been physically impossible for them to have a million men under arms. Traditionally speaking, countries are only able to put 10% of their population into the armed forces at any given time - and that is in the case of a total war. There might have been a million Swedes of all age groups who had undergone conscription at some point - but that does not mean that all those people can be mobilised. Many will be above 50 or 60 years old.
      Furthermore, Sweden had been under Social Democratic control longer than Denmark, and the Social Democrats in Scandinavia were traditionally anti-militarist. The Swedish Social Democrats didn't become truly consoled with military spending till the middle of the war.

      @gustav331 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@pyro_teamfartress2 Yeah, it was the Danish government's fault. Whose fault should it otherwise be? Their policy was borderline treason, and it was viewed as such both during and after the war. There were calls to have some of the ministers executed after 1945.
      I literally state in my comment that the government had the option of mobilising and defending the country, but they refused it.

    The reason why the casualties where so low is because Denmark didn't fight Germany due to its weak army, German leaders were pleased so they let them function as a regular country, they'd keep their king, government, and military.

      They wanted to end the invasion as quick as possible so they went for the capital first, then attacking Jutland. Some Danes kept fighting after the Danish surrender because they didn't hear about the surrender yet. Imagine you got hit in a firefight with some Jerries, he comes up to you and says "You guys already surrendered, Dumbass. Get this one a medic." He would've shot you dead if he had a bad day or was really pissed at you but if you were lucky, you might have gotten the former.

    People tend to forgot by basically allowing Denmark to be invaded without any fuss Denmark could keep a good relationship with Germany that was used to save thousands of Danish Jews. I am sure if we wanted to we could have made a suicidal attempt at defending our Islands and hold out for a while longer, maybe weeks if the Germans didn't anticipate we would, but to what end? Would have lost anyway and now in a much worse position to help anyone.

    People are joking about how quick the battle was and how few people died, but it's important to keep in mind that these were 69 (ffs why that number) real people, with real lives. Every single one of these people had friends and family and were just involving themself in this because it was their job. Sure its way lower than other battles in wwii, but its still important to remember these 49 heroes who just tried to defend themselves and the 20 men, enslaved and brainwashed by a dictator with no regard for the millions of lives he took.

    The Danish actually made a movie in 2015 about that, called 9. april/Haderslev or something. I dont think I've ever laughed so hard as when the MC grabs some hesitant officer by the neck and demands to stand his ground and defend the town, only to get scared like a little bitch and immediately surrender to the Germans like an hour later only because ONE of his soldiers got WOUNDED. Wounded, not even killed! And the Danish heatedly argued with me that it was a film about their heroes!

    • @gustav331
      @gustav331 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The officer surrendered in the movie because he was surrounded by armoured vehicles, and he didn't have any anti-armour weaponry. In reality, the army (which wasn't mobilised, by the way, so only 14.000 conscripts undergoing basic training were ready for combat) fought on longer than the Germans had expected them to, because the government surrendered very early on. The Danish politicians had resolved to surrender before the invasion even came, and that's the reason why they had refused to mobilise.

    • @frederickoftheartic2209
      @frederickoftheartic2209 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The last part sounded fairly insulting to the Danes. They were outnumbered, outgunned, and low on ammo, and they were going to throw their lives for what? Not every soldier is suicidal and would throw their lives away in a hopeless situation. It was honestly more realistic than anything Hollywood had ever splurted out. They aren't heroes in the hollywood standard of throwing their lives away, constantly killing enemies that appear to just throw themselves at the enemy, and high kill counts, they're heroes by protecting their country to the best of their abilities but knowing when it's no longer logically feasible to continue fighting. Plus, this was the early war nordic front of the war, the Germans weren't really known for their savagery yet and the Danes were seen as almost equal to Germans (or at least, not as ethnically inferior to be equal to Poles), so the Germans didn't have any reason to treat the Danes abusively, unless in some instances. I can even recall in the ending scene that the German officer offered the Danish officer a ride in his car, but the officer refuses and takes the bus with his men.

      Denmark was neither annexed, nor made a Reichskomissariat. Hitler didn't even take back Northern Schleswig, which belonged to Germany before WW1. Denmark retained its de jure independence, government, and in 1940 even joined thr anti-Comintern Pact, becoming a de facto German ally. Even the Jews in Denmark were not discriminated against until Germans dissolved the Danish government in 1943. In fact, Denmark's fate was similar to Thailand's
