  • Today we wrote our own jazz chord progression using completely random chords. We had to get a little creative, but in the end I don't think anyone would even know.

I loved this idea of gamifying theory as a way to open up new ideas. More vids like this, please.

Dice & card game was so cool Josh. The journey was excellent and you had me glued to throughout with your motif. Fabulous video quality and editing 😎🎹😁

Cool food for thought! For whatever reason watching this video made me realize I need to be able to walk a better bassline in my left to free up some creative harmony possibilities. Good stuff!

Nice one, Josh. It reminds me of a performance by Barry Harris, but in that case they are melody notes.
It'd be even cooler, I think, or maybe not, to follow the exact order of the notes given by the dice.

I’ve seen that, where he writes a melody from cards drawn by the audience. Was a very cool performance.

I used to do this a lot but I never tried to make the progressions functional; I just challenged myself to come up with a melody that would work with the random progression. It's a great way to come up with new ideas.

Next time, you can even give yourself more restrictions: Let the dice also decide the Key, and quality of the chords. We'll see what comes out of it😅
Given that the dice has 12 sides, select different chord qualities for each side and just trust the dice.
Your only input would be the melody.

That could be worse than AI jazz!

You should try to make it work in the order you roll. Maybe roll a second dice to determine the quality, or a secondary function (not sure yet, just freestyling) and then fill in the gaps from there. It won't sound like jazz, but it might sound like something fresh.

You know, I did this in a practice run. The problem was that it forced me into completely impractical situations, which I wasn’t sure how I could make very educational. It was fun to try.
