I had a video shoot years ago with the president of a big bank whose time and patience were equally limited. It was a simple setup, just him at his desk doing a script off a prompter straight into camera. The client wanted the shot done there in his real office, with next to zero time for any kind of lighting/prep and no time to even scout it beforehand. Did what we (me and the creative director at the agency that was contracted to do this gig) could to fill in the nasty top-lighting shadows from the fluorescents above, but there was only so much we could do in the few minutes we had to scramble before the president arrived (he was in a conference room down the hall).
Anyways, this particular morning, our sound guy didn't show up. No worries, I've done the one-man-band thing a million times on small straightforward videos like this. It's one more thing to worry about, but luckily I brought an arm/stand for the mic and I can just position it over the guy's desk with no need to manually boom anything.
My main source of anxiety is the prompter, because I need to feed the script in there and I'm standing around on set waiting for it to hit my email so I can enter it in and make sure all the formatting comes across right. Finally the script comes in, I copy/paste it into the prompter app, luck out with no further steps needed and figure now with the camera and lighting set and the sound rigged up, I can relax.
The president comes in, clearly hates the idea of doing any kind of video whatsoever, sees it as a waste of his time, and cannot read a prompter to save his life. But we get through it, just doing it a line at a time, and I'm thinking to myself I'll have to save it in the edit with cutaways to whatever boring financial jargon he was talking about. No big deal, done it before, part of corporate video gig life.
We thank the president for his time, start packing up gear, breaking down our lights and our mic, and I walk over to my h4n sitting on the ground. With absolute horror, I realize I never hit record on the sound. I was too busy worrying about the camera and the prompter and the president's surly attitude and impatience and I forgot to roll on sound.
Only a couple minutes passed, but in my mind it felt like eternity. I debated with myself about whether it would be possible at all to salvage the scratch track from my 5Dmk2. No, definitely not, I'd just be lying to myself if I thought that might work.
So, I make the longest walk of a few feet over to my creative director, as the president is striding down the hallway to his next meeting, and tell him we didn't get the sound. We have to do it again. We're going to have to get him back and do it one more time and hope it goes smoother.
I thought at that point I might be working my last job for that client, but the creative director took it in stride and I think probably realized I got hosed by having zero support crew on this gig. The president grumbled a little but came back a little while later and we got through it. I think ultimately it was my honesty in that moment to just come out with the bad news in a timely manner that saved it, even though every fiber of my being wanted to get out of there and try to work with the camera scratch track!
Still gets under my skin years later when I think back on that... but I've never forgotten about rolling on sound again!

Got hired to take pictures of puppies for a local shop, thought it was going to be an easy gig. This shop had 4 locations with about 100-150 new puppies per week for each location. So I had to take a lot of puppy portraits to say the least, after hours and hours of taking the portraits, the owner comes in and complains I wasn’t using this huge umbrella light. Mind you it was daytime in Miami, perfect lightin conditions for my Sony A7iii. The owner made me take the pictures all over again, and downloaded Lightroom on his computer at work to watch me edit the pictures. After dealing with this idiot for 10+ hours (for $250) I said fuck it and told him to find a new photographer. I’ve shot weddings, festivals, product, portraits, but apparently I can’t shoot puppies. I’ll never forget the look on his face as I walked out and told him to find a new photographer and he asks me “was it because of the umbrella?” Lol
Larry you will always be remembered as my worst client.

One of my first client shoots was a total disaster. It was about portraits of the employees. Before the shoot, we decided to use their office as background to make the images a little more lively. All employees should wear cloth without a pattern and not too much makeup.
When I arrived, I was put in a tiny room that didn't have any good background and didn't bring my own. None of the employees knew I was coming, which meant that they didn't wear the "right" cloth, and some of them hat extreme makeup. Also, some of them had appointments, so the group photo (which wasn't planned at all) had to be captured in a hurry. One of the employees had to be added in Photoshop.
When the job was done, I had to hunt for the money.
Finally, more than half a year after the shoot, the employee who "organized" the shoot, wrote me a mail that they would need the images now (which I delivered half a year ago).

I have been shooting over 20 years and have faced some really bad situations that made me want to quit forever. Ive always told myself to use those moments as learning experiences and move on. 🙄🥺
My heart feels for you guys. However, I’m so proud of you and I want you to know this. Proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone and taking on a project you were not familiar with. Proud of you for not giving up and rolling with the challenges that kept hitting you. Those are the moments that make you sweat the most yet teach the most valuable lessons in the end. You may feel that you dropped the ball but that’s not the case. The issue began with their first call when booking you. Them having the initial lack of clear communication and direction to you from the creative director in the first place set you up for a negative outcome. The other obstacles such as weather are out of your control for any project. Sure you, and everyone else, can chastise you saying “should have planned ahead and sent backdrops to the office.”
Yet, here you are 1) taking on a project asked of you that you don’t normally do. 2) were planning around instructions “through the grapevine” not directly from their creative director. That was unprofessional on their part.
Most large companies have specific colors needed as the background for headshots to match their HQ requirements so it’s uniform to their brand. I learned that while shooting for Morgan Stanley and after that experience…it was the last time I ever bought backdrops again. I now do all headshots with a plain wall of possible and digitally change the background to what I need for that “in studio” look. Less equipment day of shoot little more effort in post editing…well worth to me.
    However…yeahhhhh…I’m proud of you.
Good job taking the challenge and kudos for the way you handled things in the end.

@evanranft We’ve all been there. I was once on a set of a tv commercial with an A-list celebrity. Shooting with my canon 5D mkiii I was stood behind the director who was sat on a stool in front of me. Having just changed my lens to the 85mm beast I didn’t click the lens into place properly. Leaning over the director the lens fell off the camera and hit him on the head…. Literally the worst moment of my entire life!! He was actually surprisingly cool about it, but to this day always triple check things are locked off properly!!

I think we all go through that at least once in every creative Avenue. I’ve had this happen as a photographer, videographer, DJ, motion graphics... etc. Where you feel not only obliged to refund their money, but also wish it was possible for a redo of the day which you feel like you’d gladly pay for... but that’s not the reality of things. The reality is everyone goes home bitter. After, you learn and you grow, and you do better next time, and you realize that clarity and preparation are 100% key. Winging it will not cut it!

Life is just a series of lessons. We learn, we improve. These things always happen at some point. Last week I was filming a show, I had two cameras, one was static recording the entire stage performance and the other was hand held. At the end of the show, the client asked me to get some BTS shots, but my memory card was full, I quickly grabbed the card from the stage camera and put it in my handheld, a message popped up, I didn’t read it, just clicked ok, was in such a rush, a second later I realized what the message said... DO YOU WANT TO FORMAT THIS CARD. ... and so I lost the full recording of the show. I spent the next few days, trying very hard to piece together something from all the handheld footage and BTS shots to make something work. .... nightmare! ... Such a fan Evan, your a real inspiration. Keep it real.

Evan, you're 100% right about this being a learning experience. Luckily the more you do it, the more you have that little voice in the back of your head warning you about things you used to think, like..."ah, we'll make it work" that now become, "I'd better talk to the guy in charge and understand the job". Something I learned during my career as a freelance illustrator. Cuz if you don't it'll come back to bite you every time... grin. Love your videos!

I remember doing a fall photoshoot last year for a friend of mine and her friend, the moment we got to the location I could tell the vibe was off from her friend, she clearly did not want to be there and to top it off this girl only really had one pose and kind of refused to do anything else other than that. After shooting at the first location stuff started to get more and more awkward as shoot went on, it eventually got to the point where this girl was basically mocking me while I was doing her photos, any time I made a comment after taking the photo something like "looks great" "perfect" she'd repeat those words back in a really condescending tone. October 2020 was my last paid photoshoot I've done because of that girl destroying my confidence as a photographer.

Did an entire studio shoot for a brand capturing ghost mannequin photography of all their apparel. It all started with ordering a ghost mannequin from Amazon. Some of the apparel for the photoshoot wouldn't even fit the mannequin, the CMO seemed happy at the shoot and we worked through the kinks. Photography turned out mediocre at best and the brand never used any of the images on their e-commerce site. Had to refund a large chunk of the project plus wasted over 20-30 hours of work. Preparation is so KEY sometimes. We should have just pre-rent a mannequin and test fit all the apparel. Mega huge oversight on everyone's behalf. This is how we learn and get better tho

I might have used paper tape but to be on the safe side I would have clamped a piece fabric to a c-stand for a back drop instead & if it needed to be super straight I would have just added weights to the bottom. Also I have a steamer for the wrinkles too. As a photographer you shouldn’t have to worry about that stuff if you have a good stylist.

Did the sheet work as a backdrop or was that part of what the client hated? We've all screwed up at least once. Appreciate your honesty and taking the rap. All the best to you.

Thanks for the video my worst shoot was this year and I’m studying photography so I was doing studio portraits of my classmate and I was tired because I was modelling for my classmate then I had to take her pictures and I didn’t even have time to eat but at lest I’ve learnt that you need to be prepared and comfortable because as a photographer you need to be a good problem solver

Once a friend asked me to take her portrait for her linkedin profile. So I watched some tutorials on how to do it and improvised a studio in my room. I also saw a video on how to pose people and all that stuff. After the shoot I edited the pictures thoroughly. I was kind of proud about the end result. Turned out she didn't like them, because she used my photos for a week until replacing them with selfies from her phone. That was so embarrassing.

The creative directors should just shoot their own ideas themselves. Why are they in the creative departement at all if they don't create? And if they "create" why aren't they able to pull it off themselves? What I found out is, that such people already have their photographers in the bag, but are reluctant to say openly. So they rag on the hapless photographers in the backyard and will recommend their friends for the next shooting. Otherwise I have been in the situation where I was just the guy, the models had to accept shooting - no discussion! Once I had also a creative advisor on spot, who had actually good inputs and I did pretty much what she told me to do. The photos were thus outright rejected and I had an unpleasant discussion with the owner of that site. That's why I consider photography just as a good sidehustle but not more.

I was hired by my manager, to do family portraits about 4 years ago. I thought to myself simple, what can go wrong!? EVERYTHING! The family wanted to take all the pictures inside the home, blinds closed. I set up my wrinkled backdrop, and lighting. The final product was horrible. I reimbursed them every penny, but having to see that person everyday at work for the next couple years was awkward. Lol

So I have one girl who is building her own like clothing brand and stuff and I have already shot for her once, but since I have never shot indoors with lights and stuff the pics turned out below average for my liking, but she said they were good and exactly what she wanted. Now a few weeks back she had her 2nd drop and I was again about to shoot for her but this time a bit more prepared and with a video with a gimbal etc. And while we were shooting she was euphoric like "yooo this is so good" and directing and making people stand in the back of the shots "I like how you can see everyone in the back". And since thats pretty stupid I was trying my best to still hide those people. After all that when I got to editing she was like " -_- I need the people gone from the background can you please edit them out?" And brother let me tell you...I was like. Theres only so much I can do about it. You directed and said you loved it that way and I still was trying to make it better. this is not my fault. She was pretty pissed about it. Worst of all she cropped and edited my edited images really weirdly and made them look ridiculous

Thanks for sharing! I was hired by a gay bar one time thinking I was going there to film a college formal. meanwhile, I'm in college so I think it's going to be great. I Show up like an hour early to see kinda how everything is gonna go down and to my surprise, the owner tells me that I'm filming a drag show. I still got paid but let me tell you I did not know how to make a video out of that footage.
