Did she interview for a series with MTV or are you just commenting that MTV should hire her? For sure, she should totally have her own series on MTV or any network that will take her.
I grew up in Washington Heights so it’s nice to see a TH-camr showcasing northern Manhattan culture, which is honestly so special and a really authentic part of NYC! So many people in other parts of Manhattan aren’t even true New Yorkers born and raised. But if you go north, you’re among some true native New Yorkers who are the backbone of the city!
These videos are such a treat! Folasade is so charismatic and engaging, you can tell how much she loves her community. Well done Elena with the tight intro, smooth transitions and thoughtful questions. I especially loved the footage/imagery of historic Harlem--it's obvious you did your research and it the added context is much appreciated.
I’m West African and didn’t even know places like this existed in NYC. Thanks for highlighting rich cultures that are otherwise overlooked by westerners Elena!! DEFINITELY visiting these places on my next trip to New York!
This video helped me pick my NYC neighbourhood. Love this so much as an international student very far away from home it can be hard to just get a taste of that from so far, especially since the last year. This looks a little like home :)
As someone who used to live in Harlem (and have been to the James Baldwin Lawn many times), you couldn’t have highlighted this beautiful part of the Big Apple better! Also, Folasade is gem and preached the history of black excellence in Harlem in such a beautiful way! Need to see a tour of her apartment NOW.
I love the fact that you shared that you are of Iranian origin , many people of Iranian origin are very stigmatized due to movies and non-nuanced media coverage that activates racial stereotypes about people of middle eastern decent , and even though you acknowledge the fact that you are white passing, I still think its nice and of value, that you use your platform to offer a more diversed , positive and uplifting image of women of Iranian decent.
I absolutely loved this episode. I loved how you stepped back and let her be herself and to tell the story of the community. I love how you did your own research as well before transitioning to Folasade and letting her lead. You also asked some really great questions. When I visit New York again I now where I will be going. Thank you for this :)
I am Indian. Having grown up in many different countries and amongst different cultures, I have always loved the feel of New York. The diversity is so electrifying!
I have loved every Beyond Your Block episode but THIS by far was my favorite. I am Gambian our culture is 90% similar to Senegal and seeing Teranga truly warmed my heart! Kudos to you and FolaShade and what a GREAT JOB capturing Harlem.
You’re very good at passing the mic to other people, I really wish you had a proper show bc I feel like you would ace it. But at the same time, it might put a limit on your creative freedom? Idk Anyway, thank you for allowing us to travel through your city with you!
I love your willingness to learn, listen, and let others share their lives with you! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every video you’ve made that gives me the chance to look into another’s life - thank you for this!!!
This is easily one of the coolest and most beautiful videos I've seen on youtube. Both because of the cinematic and editing side and the cultural and historical side of this. I love this series!!! These videos need to be seen by EVERYONE!!
I have to say, that as a person who has grown up around plenty of white passing people, I always wanted someone to be truly interested in my culture and rarely found it! You have truly shown how much you care & respect other cultures all around you just in one city and I truly appreciate you for all the research and perfectly filmed videos you have made. Although you and all of us have not been able to travel around the world this series has really made me more interested and excited to visit neighborhoods all around the city! THANK YOU ELENA FOR BEING A TRULY AMAZING PERSON!!
I am always fascinated with NYC; the culture, the architecture, the history, and the street food, especially. So this series is hitting such a sweet spot for me!
I'm not one to often comment on videos, but after watching each video in this series, I sincerely hope you receive recognition (& a TV/docu-series contract!) as a result because the amount of research, work & editing that goes into these is unmatched on this platform. Thank you for shedding light on different people, cultures, and parts of the city that otherwise may not have been given much attention. As an international viewer, it is very inspiring!
You’re doing SUCH an amazing job with this series. So happy to see a creator highlighting neighborhoods and small business owners that make NYC the beautiful melting pot it is.
I stepped away from watching this video more educated and appreciative of African, American and Harlem culture. Thank you so much from Sydney, Australia

I love the editing in this video and overall such a great and interesting video! Harlem seems like a special part of New York with its history and culture.
MTV messed up not committing to an Elena-hosted travel show
TRUE
