The words the characters are saying in not what's going on in the scene is a huge misconception. When used properly, dialogue is action. It is a battle for each characters want, it's a character's Jungian Ego in action - who the character currently is or wants to be seen as. Subtext is exactly what he's saying it is, but dialogue is much more than he's saying it is.
What movie or TV show exhibits excellent use of subtext?

Severance is really good at juggling subtext and on-the-nose dialogue.
