When they said they put a piece of iron in the medals I was concerned. Iron reacts with copper and you get galvanic corrosion. And since even the gold is gold plated, I wondered what would be happening to the base metal underneath.
Gold does NOT rust. It sits in all sorts of environments for millennia and comes out shining... don't blame the varnish, blame the cheap alloy. Silver and bronze remain shiny only if used and polished regularly, but corrosion should not be a problem with properly constituted alloys in normal atmosphere.

This is what is happening to the metals i can bet.
