    That is the EXACT same map we had in my school growing up. That was a strange bit of nostalgia I had not seen coming.

  • @akyhne
    @akyhne 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    That map of Denmark, us an old public school map. They looked exactly like that, when I went to public school, 45 years ago.
    They were hanging behind the teacher, under the ceiling, just above the green "blackboard", to be pulled down, when needed, along with a world map.

    • @TravelinYoung
      @TravelinYoung  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yeah, this map is super cool. We regularly track and shop at this place called luksusunk and they had this along with a Europe map over the holidays. So we quickly grabbed the DK one. I absolutely love maps, so this is pretty special to have as art on our wall.

      @@TravelinYoung Ah yes, the classroom map of Europe. Printed sometime in the 60s and never getting replaced despite becoming increasingly inaccurate over the years. East and West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, the USSR, they were all on that map and stayed there long after they had ceased to exist in the real world 😀

    • @Nikoline94

      They still had and used this map in my public school (2000's)

    The amount of hours i've spent looking at that map, and going through it with classmates for assignments during grade school. What an absolute nostalgia trip.

      I just love maps so I would have spent hours as well. So happy we were able to get this, it’s special and helps us connect to Denmark even more.

    The more Danish you become, the less you will explore of Denmark. Always happens with movers anywhere. A sign of settling as a local 🙂

    • @Wishbone1977
      @Wishbone1977 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I think it's probably inevitable that the more you feel like this is your home, the less exotic (for the lack of a better word) it will seem, and your desire to explore it will decline. There are certainly interesting things to see around the country, but apart from specific sightseeing opportunities one Danish town is much like another, particularly if they're in the same general area. There are regional differences of course, but apart from Bornholm which is very different from the rest of the country, everywhere else is actually much the same. A small town in the north of Jutland really isn't very different from a small town in the south of Funen, so unless there is something specific you want to see in a given place, merely going somewhere you haven't been before will offer diminishing returns in terms of new experiences.

    • @joenthesaorgian
      @joenthesaorgian 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      For me, as a local in my 50s, covid and other stuff, including an interest in our cultural heritage, meant a late re-discovery of our country, with a lot of trips in the provinces, exploring also minor places, that I am now very glad to have experienced. There are many small, hidden and varied gems in Denmark, even when you've travelled for example throughout Europe a lot (for more than 3 years, in my case), and some overseas places.
      Some places that you might find interesting in the future: Christiansø (I seem to remember that you've been to Bornholm); Anholt; Ærø; Rubjerg Knude area; Nationalpark Thy; quirky museums in Copenhagen, like the Storm P Museum and the Heerup Museum; Malergaarden artist's family museum in Plejerup, Odsherred; Kullaberg peninsula in Sweden, near Helsingør, the sights on Stevns, etc. etc.

    In our school, back in the 70’ies, we had that map, as well as one where the larger cities (købstæder) was blanked out. We were supposed to know which city was which, and where.
    Nowadays, I feel people have almost no idea of Danish geography. I work in trains as a train conductor. The questions I get asked about where which citites are … is baffling.and … sad.

    Yes, Danes do tend to let kids be more free, even when they grow up 😋
    My Chinese born ex wants me to chase our oldest kid around, which I refuse as long as my girl just remember to call me to tell where she's going.
    But I live in a very family friendly area, if someone was behaving weird around the kids, they'd get injured.
    We know eachother, the cashiers at Min Købmand recognise me and my kids... that's one reason I'm not seeking to live in midtown CPH.

    Now you've got that map. then you see how very long costal line Denmark has. Denmark, seen from the the sea, is beatiful. I have for the last three years each year spent two weeks sailing in Danish waters. As you want to see more of Denmark, then you should try to get on a (short) sailing tour, beyond Furesøen and Lynby sø. If you would like to take a daytrip, in protected waters then let me know.

    My big goal this year is to become a US citizen, which I applied for late 2023. I figured after 20+ years it's time...

    What a wonderful journey it has been to see you settling into our beautiful country. I think that in your circumstances, with a relocation of that size, it is a brilliant move to make these videos as it cannot help but make you reflect on your circumstances in a rather concrete way. Both as individuals and as a family. Just making agreements about future videos strengthens your unity and approach to Denmark. And in a few days you will be lucky enough to experience something as undemocratic as the coronation of a new king. The Danish monarchy has a history that is at least 4 times as long as the United States. :-) Happy New Year, dear Danes 🙂

    You americans never learn danish language . When you do not make the efort to learn the language , after many years in Denmark , it means that you live in a paralel world and you do not show respect to Denmark / Danish society, danish.

      Maya og mig er flydende på dansk, men vi lave vores videoer på engelsk fordi vi vil gerne vores engelsk medlem at forstår. Vi har lavet et par af videoer helt på dansk. Måske min grammatik er ikke perfekt men jeg kan tale dansk. - M

      @@MaximDL1410 it is important to us for our content to be accessible to friends and family in the US. So it will be in English outside of the rare exception when we provide updates on our Danish proficiency.

      @MaximDL1410:
      You do know, that Your statements sounds more than a little xenophobic?
      Also I think You are missing the entire motivation for these videos. These 3 lovely and friendly persons tells us, and whomever wishes to know, what it is like to travel to and settle in Denmark as an American family.
      That is a message primarely targeted at other people interested in what it is like to come to Denmark and immerge yourself in Danish culture and Danish history.
      To do so in Danish would probably be too much of a barrier for many of the intended viewers.
      Keep the videos comming. Keep them in English and bear with the occasional xenophobe.
