I'm in Western MT, and also got a lemon cypress a little while ago. It did like it outside until about early October, and now it seems happy enough inside under LED lights. They do grow fast and respond well to pruning, so long as you don't do too much all at once, and cut back to buds. They really like to grow dense, upright, and they send most of their growth to their apex. So, If you want branch definition (looking like a tree rather than a bush) and sweeping branches you will have to do some wiring, and periodic thinning, particularly at the top. I really enjoy mine

That's good to know! And yeah, my plan with this was to go slow and steady. Seems like anytime I go too aggressive on a species I'm not familiar with, it doesn't work out.

I'm in zone 8 so I was able to keep mine outside for 2 years before the dog killed it. Apparently, they don't like that much acid... It did handle everything I did to it like a champ. I even bare rooted it to get it in a shallow pot. The branches can be a little brittle during the growing season. Now I want to try one of these indoors!

They sure are pretty trees. One thing I'm learning though, (the hard way unfortunately), is they don't give any warning signs when they're dying. And even when they're dead, they don't look any different for the first couple months. You can only tell by feeling the foliage and seeing if it's flexible and bendy, or crispy and stiff. I've lost a couple without even knowing it so far 😬

I have the "Care Card" that came with my Wilma Goldcrest Cypress (aka Lemon Cypress).
    The Card reads:
    Mature Size-
    6-8 Ft Tall
    1-2 Ft Wide
    Spacing-
    2' Apart
    Water Usage-
    Keep moist until established.
    Blooms-
    Prized for foliage.
    Cold Hardiness-
    Hardy to 0° to 10° F
Widely used as an effective windbreak or vertical interest in the landscape.
    Hope this helps. 🙂

This is a worthwhile project. May I suggest that you not center the plant in the pot. The trimmed rootball will allow you to position the tree to one side and slightly closer to the back of the pot. Removing the larger stone only adds to the symmetrical look, which is not a characteristic of bonsai. Thanks for doing this. (I bought a lemon cypress/Wilma Goldcrest Cypress today as a small indoor holiday tree. Not sure if I will experiment with bonsai techniques or just use it as a potted specimen plant after the holidays.)

These can't take temps below 50°F so keep it cool indoors in bright light (bedroom). from the moment outside night temps go above 50, put outside. In the cooler period don't keep to wet. Not the easiest again to growing colder climates but you can when you follow these guidelines. Like other pines and a-like, repotting and styling is best done in spring.
They thrive in a mix of 30% akadama, 30% Kiryu, 20% lava, 20% pumice or gravel. This mix I use for all my conifers and pines, like Auracala and Podocarpus.

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  ปีที่แล้ว

It's kind of all relative to the type of tree, how much root work you do to it, in the health of the tree overall. But if the tree is healthy and you don't completely devastate the roots, you can probably get away with it this time of year.
