Okay, but why the heck do they say "Gross" to his overthinking? Or just in general, is the word "kimoi" that easily flung around without it having much value or being taken at face value? It's just so weird coming from cultures where you'd never call anyone gross unless it's gross in a physical sense.

I can’t speak for everyone, but Hinano, Kamito, and many others seem to use words like kimoi, kisshoi, etc very liberally. I take it to indicate that they’re close enough to do so. Further, Japanese doesn’t have many ‘bad’ words, yet they often use insults worse than kimoi et al. in conversation with each other.

I somewhat agree with what others have said about the liberal use of kimoi but in this case I think it's more about the fact that either way his reply wouldn't have been natural. Thinking so much about how to respond to a compliment from a friend that you end up silent, with the purpose of achieving some goal, is honestly a bit creepy. Of course, even if it's true it's still just a lighthearted jab between friends.

it just means "annoyingly funny" kinda in this sense. gross is just the literal translation. i mean in english people say stuff like damn/sheesh in random contexts so i dont see why you see this as strange
