Sorry for so many comments but “you are not your past self” just hit me like lightning. I heard someone say, “Discipline is a pinch but regret is a crushing blow.” Though I’ve been a fairly disciplined person I have so many regrets that haunt me often leading to depression. When my focus is on the failures of the past it really can destroy my present and subsequently my future. Discipline of mind requires a focus on the future self, not the past self, and allowing that to determine the present.

@@dr.benjaminhardy So I ended up getting your book, 'Be Your Future Self Now,' because I think I need to learn some lessons from that first. But given where I am right now in achieving my goals, one thing I'm doing is taking the 20% that's most impactful and leaving the 80% that isn't. Like you say, being flexible in the approach but not the destination.
I am struggling with letting go of my job to pursue my goals. I carry the insurance and as a teacher at my kid’s private school I also get the tuition discount. If I quit (my 80% change) my family is really affected. Now, in time, after pursuing and achieving my goals we will most likely be in a better spot than right now, but it takes time and until then...I don’t know how we would live without my income, insurance and tuition discount. I can keep changing 20% for now, we only have one left and she is a sophomore, so just 3 years left (but in 3 years I want to be different!)it’s so hard!
This is can be a tricky situation. It sounds like you are committed to graduating her through and that is fantastic. What would have to be true to work just 1% on that true 20% that you desire to do in the future? Compounding those 1% items will adjust and move that needle point just enough to stay the course until you can release that 80%.
@@dr.benjaminhardy I am a teacher who makes almost nothing literally, after insurance and tuition so I have a home business (job) that I am giving up to pursue this better goal that provides passive income and I think being Uber initial during my summers and breaks will be helpful. I am trying to speed things up this summer and create a lot of content that can be more slowly released throughout the school year so that I can keep momentum moving on the design side throughout the year. Then next summer be ready to even 10x what I did this summer. I know it won’t have the same results as quitting but I don’t know that quitting is an option yet. Maybe even after this year I could replace enough of my income to quit next year? It’s definitely a goal!
What can you let go today, to start working towards that 20%? Do you watch a couple of shows each night? Maybe only watch one show and use that extra 30-60 min a day to work on that future now. Rather then waiting for your daughter to graduate in 3yrs. Start building the foundation now. Good luck! It’s tough, I know.
I thought it would be interesting to analyze this as if it were intended to be a literal mathematical formula. If I understand correctly, according to Dan Sullivan, your 10x goals should be over a 25 year period, which allows for multiple transformations to get there. Mathematically, if each transformation is the result of applying the 80/20 principal, you would achieve 4x with each transformation, and a total of 16x after 2 transformations. Here is a breakdown of the math. 80% of the results come from 20% of the causes and 20% of the results come from 80% of the causes. Let's say you are currently producing 100 "points" each 25 years. That means 80 points are coming from 20% of your actions / current self and 20 points are coming from 80% of your actions / current self. If you shed the less valuable 80% and fill up that empty space with the more valuable 20%, well that 20% can now fit into the 100% 5 times (100 / 20 = 5). So the 80 points that previously came from your 20% are now multiplied by 5, and 80 * 5 = 400 points. So for each tranformation, you multiply 80% of the points by 5. 80% of 400 points is 320 points. 320 points * 5 = 1,600 points, a 16x jump from the 100 points you started at. A simpler way to calculate this is, for each transformation, you multiple the current points by 4 since it is always a 4x jump with each tranformation. So for that last example, 400 points * 4 = 1,600. The next tranformation would be 1,600 * 4 = 6,400. So by the 3rd tranformation (20% of the 20% of the 20%) you would have done 64x! Then I wanted to have fun tweaking this strategy to try to achieve even more. I think cutting out 80% and focusing on the remaining 20% is good the first time around. After you do this you will create more freedom for yourself, giving yourself enough room to focus on just the 15% that is creating...okay I'm too tired now to calculate what 15% must generate, but it's higher than 80%. Each time you make this transformation, you could focus on even less of what got you there, 10%, 5%, 4%, 3%, 2%, 1%, exponentially becoming more unique and valuable in your exponential transformations (not literally, but you get the idea). Taking this to the level beyond that, you could choose not to shoot for a pre-chosen percentage to shed. Instead, you could analyze what parts of you and your actions are bringing the most value, and then feel out how much you can get away with shedding at once, constantly trying to create more freedom to shed even more. I still think it might be helpful to analyze it percentage wise, once you pick some things to shed and some things to focus on, ask yourself what percentage that actually makes up, and see if you can shed/multiply even more at once, or if that would create too many problems or if that would take too long to get the results or if it would require too much transformation to be enjoyable.
@@dr.benjaminhardy @Dr. Benjamin Hardy Thanks. One part of what I said was wrong. Focusing on the most effective things you do but going lower than 20% would not yield more than 80% of the results. To get more than 80%, you need to do more than 20%, because to get 100% of your current results you need to keep doing 100% of what you are currently doing. But even so, at 20/80, that is 4x leverage, and you could still increase your leverage even more, according to this theory, by focusing on less than 20%. For example, if you instead immediately focused on the most effective 4% (20 % of 20 is 4), you would be following the 4 / 64 rule, which is 16X leverage.
@@dr.benjaminhardy The main lesson I take away from this video is that in order to achieve my goals, I must first become the person I mentally review myself in the future, with characteristics and qualities, to make it easier for me to observe my current version and remove 80 % of this persona, which does not match the future version, and with this it will be easier to remove the blocks, characteristics, habits and old mental models, (mostly unconscious) that would make it difficult or impossible to reach my future version 10x. Am I understanding the concept right? If I have 5 big goals in life, and I never really focused on one long enough to build it; I should be 10x-ing on just one for 3-5 years or long enough to build it / achieve it, then my next 10x would be the next goal on my list? These goals are also related in a sense that when I achieve one, it’ll make the rest a lot easier to achieve.
Jim Collins stated that, "If you have more than three priorities, you have none." Looking at those goals, select the 1-3 that you want to deep dive into now, choosing those that if completed will change everything (or make the others easier).
@@dr.benjaminhardy Thank you for this. Especially the choosing 1-3 that will change everything or make the others easier. It makes things a lot clearer. BE, DO, HAVE. This sounds like LIFESPRING back in the 1970s? Have you heard of it?
Yes- it branched into other names but still exists today. Powerful training.
Yes, it has evolved over time.
@@dr.benjaminhardy thanks for confirming.
@Faith Deeter yes powerful, I learned to take everything with a grain of salt.
Watching this video made me realize that I have to go 1X before I can think about going 10X.
My issue was trying to build 2 creative careers at once. So I am now focusing on building one that when successful will make the others easier. And I’m setting 3 big goals a year for the one career. Thanks for all the value you put out there, Dr. Hardy!
Basing your present upon your 10x vision; doesn’t that fly in the face of The Gain verses The Gap, Ben?
I also struggle with this.
The gap and the gain is the act of measuring backwards and comparing your growth to you and you only. 10x is future minded.
@@dr.benjaminhardy Thank you for giving clarity to this subject.
Is this only for business? I just started reading it but I'm a student. Is there any way I can use it in my life?
That is a Pareto's Principle.
Where can I get copy of slipstream hacking? loved the audio

I understand the 80/20 concept, but the words "new" and "existing" are a bit confusing--is that "new effort" vs. "existing effort" or habits, or something else--please clarify, thank you.
New and existing relates to the tasks and/or focus points in which you are working on.
Do you have a list of book recommendations Ben?
Related to what topic, so that I can suggest related to a current growth area. I have several videos of book suggestions related to a variety of topics as well.
Anything related to exponential growth / achieving big goals in short time.
please share some wisdom of Robert Greene too
Will see what I can do in future videos. Thanks for the suggestions
100% of my life seems essential to me
I would invite you to write down everything you do each day, of those items what can you delegate out to allow more whitespace? If you could go deeper on the things you truly enjoy what would that do for you?
@@dr.benjaminhardy thank you! Will do
