  • This jam is brought to you by the Elektron Octatrack MkII. Because of the new 1.5 update I felt the need to dust off my Digitakt and used that for programming the drums and cutting up the guitar and keys recordings.
Recorded these stems with Reaper using the following plugins: Cableguys Shaperbox 2, Soundtoys Effect Rack, several plugins that I coded myself.
No post-processing was done on this performance. There is some interest in seeing my production workflow and I do plan on doing more videos of that nature in future but for now please just enjoy the music. :)
Give me a like and subscribe if you enjoy this stuff - I post a new jam every week and don't want to feel like I'm posting into a blackhole!
    Cheers!

Damn, man. That's a hell of a compliment! Thank you! I've definitely been putting in the hours trying to fully understand this machine!

Nice! I really like Boards Of Canada! I might try to do more stuff like them.

I just got into a DAW and spent some money on a minlab 3. Come from a martial arts and illustration background. You're skill is like wizardry to me right now lmao. Continue on with your magic my friend

Thanks man, that's a really nice compliment! Keep at it, I've recently started trying to escape the DAW but been using Reaper for around 10 years. The minilab 3 looks great, I have the keystep pro but I'm a little bit disappointed with some bugs and features lacking!
What DAW are you learning btw?

@@tinygregmusic Cakewalk by Bandlabs. From my research so far, its VERY powerful with minimal limitations for a lot of things. Plus its plugin compatible and all that which is a Godsend considering its free. Bandlabs is like a sample distribution and midipack app/website. It's pretty comparable to FL Studio except with a different UI and less features stock. I'm not any good using a piano roll or anything yet, but previously I used a web app called JummBox 2.5 to create chip-tune beats usin a piano roll.

I know of Cakewalk but I've never used it or seen it being used. I'll have to watch some TH-cam videos. If you upload some let me know :)

    Another gem.
I have a question that maybe you could help me with, since you seem to have an approach to hardware boxes that seems to make sense to me. How seemless is the live looping on the Octatrack? Meaning can you grab and incorporate sampled phrases in real time as you are preforming a piece? Is it possible to slice and manipulate a live loop mid song? I ask because, while I have some boxes that allow for nifty sampling features, it's a process that has to happen as a preparation for a song, I'm hoping to find something that let's the machine funk and I have never used the Octatrack.

Thanks for the compliment man! And thanks for watching!
The Octatrack can indeed sample, resample and splice all without stopping the music. You can trigger recording to start and stop in time with your bpm for perfect loops, you can have it only record while a button is pressed, you can overdub and replace, etc. You can even pre-program rhythms with slices before the slices have been recorded, which is a lot of fun It's very versatile and all of the settings can be modified while performing too, but it does pay off if you get your preferred settings dialed in beforehand. It's very streamlined once you get the hang of it. The only gripe I have really is that there is only limited amount of ram for sampling but that can be increased if you change your settings and play your samples from the card instead of from ram.
Hope that's useful to you, if you get the chance to borrow or rent one to try it out that would be good. The Octatrack can do so much, it can be overwhelming but the manual is pretty simple to digest.

@@tinygregmusic thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response. That's excellent, looking forward to getting my hands on one, love not stopping and starting and don't mind setting templates up before hand.

@@tinygregmusic will do! I also love gear talk. Love your vibes. Your songs have such a pleasing movement, evolution and rhythmic resolutions. I said it before, but it sounds, sometimes, like a really beautiful map being unfolded.
In gear talk- the MC 707 is really fun. The synth's are definitely annoying to tweak but it has all the great Roland sounds, which I am a suckered for, and spending some time with the box makes the flow work.

The 707 looks great! I actually spent some time wondering if I should get that before I settled on the Octatrack. It has an impressive array of effects that you can apply too!

Did the Digitakt help you make this track differently than only having the Octa in your hands?

I would say that it did. The new Werp machine allowed me to get really creative with the guitar and drum loops that I fed into it. A real nice blend of control and random over how the loops were stretched gave me some really interesting rhythms that I wouldn't have found with the Octatrack alone!
