Linux Foundation will happily do anything, including working on Chrome, except actually working on Linux.
If big tech wants it then the linux foundation will happily champion it and spend money on it. Can't expect say amazon to afford it...
It is neither the goal nor the responsibility of the Linux Foundation to work on Linux, despite the name. They mostly just fund and provide infrastructure and governance for FOSS projects, so this move falls squarely in their alley.
We also have to remember that most of the LF's money comes from industry players such as Google and Microsoft.
@@AschKris even so, it's absolutely hilarious to make fun of them.
The reason the Linux Foundation doesn’t fund the kernel as much is because, to be honest, there’s not that much to fund-it's already supported by many sources and worked on by people at major companies. Instead, it makes more sense to put money into things that run on the kernel, making sure they get the necessary infrastructure and maintenance. The Foundation focuses on backend projects like Automotive Grade Linux, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and OpenSSF, which provide the utilities and libraries that things like Wayland and WINE rely on. After all, if you're building an automotive Linux system, you’ll probably be using Wayland for the compositor, so funding AGL helps get everything working, which then benefits Wayland. They do fund the kernel too, but not as much.
@@AstoundingAmelia >there's not that much to fund
Meanwhile, wireless networking subsystem literally had (or still has) no maintainer. And that wasn't the first time, as far as I remember.
You don't have to lick corporate boot so hard.
Thanks for the update. on how the Google situation is going
Android does NOT ask the user what browser they would like. You get google chrome + the default from the manufacturer. that is it aside from anything installed via google play.
I may be wrong, but I think they do ask on the EU
@@danielagustinmorales5696 no
If you install a different browser application and go to open a link in say a messages app, iirc Android *will* prompt you to decide which browser you want to use to open the link the first time you try to do so. But I haven't factory reset my phone in a while and can't say if this is the default behaviour of stock Android vs CalyxOS
You are trying to talking sense to euro poors and commies. Won't work
@@danielagustinmorales5696 I had never seen this before until today. I was gifted this morning a new device by a family member and I was surprised when it asked me during the initial setup process what browser I wanted the device to install and use as default... in any case that doesn't really matter because it still forces you to install other google services that you can't disable, appart from forcing you to use a google account for the device, etc etc...
5:24 and people in the United States 100% fall for these things (not everyone, have to clarify that because if not "not me" people will come crying) and they even defend it, US people are stupidly gullible when they mention freedom.
Also, media illiteracy is a huge problem in the USA, that also helps with the gullible.
Because of boomers, and older people, and people alike are just as dumb enough to realize things, they can fall for a scam, but they can't share passwords to strangers online? How strange and weird is that! But to be honest, if some foreign nation starts exploiting peoples gullibleness in the US via media and other means, spreading some sort of propaganda and misinformation/disinformation online, then so be it, let china do that, or other foreign nation do that, let alone a Z westerner (Gen Z in a western world) praising Communism, and watch TikTok all day long. Your probably right.
as an american I agree. I am even a veteran and its gotten so bad i feel that my friends who died while deployed died for nothing.
People have a misconception that the US is a free democracy but in reality it is actually an oligarchy.
Given I/we have to make "choices" about cookies almost every time we visit a website for the first time (since clearing cookies and/or fresh installing a browser), TWO choices before using a browser/OS is almost irrelevant for inconvenience.
What's most annoyed me with Google's practices is that I recently installed Chrome (for the first time in several years), exclusively for YT, because Firefox is sooo slow for me (it's "okay" without extensions, but with them, which I VERY MUCH prefer) every YT page takes ~10-15 seconds to load fully, if I don't wait until fully loaded, the site can be quite buggy.
Them having adsense AND a browser AND the primary VOD platform for much of the world makes for huge conflicts-of-interest at the very least.
N.B. All other web stuff I use Firefox for, Chrome [as a flatpack] is only used for YT.
Great video. I like your "accent", what country are you from? (It sounds funny while still being easily understandable)
Liked and subscribed btw

I didn’t mean to critique your accent, it’s just funny.
@oscarfiala2104 it's not an accent, I genuinely misspoke there lol
Who basically runs the Linux Foundation? Hint... Its not for you.
nice video lighting
If Chrome goes to linux then the incentive to use firefox will llower even more, not sure how to feel about that, it's like a win and a loose.
At the end of the day, everyone in FOSS needs to realise that any reliance on corporate money is detrimental for the space in the long run. They may throw crumbs to projects like Firefox when they are irrelevant and not a threat to them, but they will actively leech off FOSS projects that benefit them, and they will never hesitate to kill of any that may become their competitors. Corporate power and industry players are not friends of FOSS, so the sooner splits with them happen, the sooner independence from them will become possible.
It's a win in my book if it gets back the manifest V2 support, unlikely tho
@@danielagustinmorales5696 That's a good point. I also started using firefox because while the performance isn't as good when it's good, on heavier sites the performance is better, so the bad isn't as bad, and doesn't make my fans blow all the way up. So it feels more balanced.
Google Google Google I know google very well 🙌
maybe going bankrupt would made mozilla learn to do firefox again...
Love the [kind of] shout out for Jacobin.
I do wonder what the percentage of Open-Source contributors [with distinctions for those paid to do so by employers] is for Lefties, Socialists, NeoLibs, Libertarians and Authoritarians. I'd expect it's predominantly Libertarians and Socialists (by Libertarians I mean right-wing ones, I know it's a separate distinction and many lefties and socialists are libertarians too, but I'm using the more common [U.S centric] usage.
Uhm, not sure how I feel about all this. Google definitely is a monopoly, but it's also the backbone of very important projects. Even though AOSP is only a free tier Android, it's crucial for ROM development. Same goes for Chrome and forks. And taking away funding from Mozilla can have an extremely detrimental effect on web as that would mean Google has almost complete control over the spec - as servo and ladybird are still not in a usable state (no adoption).
5 billion dollars. Where will the money end up?
Is point 3 in meant to be kill instead of chill? 6:01
I think they really meant "chill" because "lower" would be synonymous in that context
I want same thing happen to windows! They push IE and edge too much and yet no monopolistic moves lawsuit is applied meanwhile chrome which was not default in early Android phones it was clearly better in every way even today. Not to mention google chrome is the one who pushed web what it is today. We would have been using IE or really bad quality firefox if there was no chrome
i missed you
1. How can China say things about monopoly of all things, when Tencent does the very same thing, has application for every type of things, like search engine Soso, QQ Browser, social app where you pay taxi, bus, gov stuff, etc;
2. If you don't have google as a default search engine in device, what will you use? Bing, which sucks? Duck duck go is using google and bing, so it's like you have nothing.
3. You can remove chrome anywhere, just install Firefox. Android allows you to disable the vendor browser, and in dev options you can choose webview type as well for embeded browsers
What you can't remove:
- Edge in windows
- Hard time setting search engine in Edge, it keeps reverting to bing
So, basically micro$oft should be in the stage for being a monopoly,
you can remove both chrome on Android, and Edge on Windows, but you need to try a little harder. Which is bad of course, you should be able to do it just like with all other apps.
5:25 Two choices of spyware?
Google needs to open pwa in android for 3rd party apps
they should let go of the browser
FYI: firefox also runes spy service.
Do you mean the thingy that can be unchecked in the settings, or somethjng else?
@no_name4796 they probably mean anonym - the supposedly privacy focused ad company mozilla bought - which isn't directly connected to firefox itself for now
