Today Sunday June 25th,2023 and I’m here again to enjoy this nice masterpiece. Show some love if you’re reading this in future. Much love from Kumasi Ghana 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
So much energy, synergy, musicianship, artistry, choreography and the man’s endless charismatic stage presence … entertainment at its magical best that blows the pandemic blues away every time I listen to Kanda Bongo Man. 🙏❤️🙏
Kanda took the music rumba from Kinshasa, tinkered with it by varying the rhythm and speeding it up, but there was no mistaking him for a new-age noodler or wannabe rocker. He earned his popularity by sticking to what he knew best. And for Kanda fidelity to the distinctly Zaïrean style begot success. Joe Boyd, the owner of London-based Hannibal Records, caught one of Kanda's shows in London 'and was just knocked out.' He tracked the singer down in Paris and worked out a licensing agreement to release Kanda's music on Hannibal in the United Kingdom and the United States. Boyd repackaged Malinga and an earlier work, Amour Fou, by selecting tracks from each and issuing them as Amour Fou/Crazy Love in 1987. He repeated the process in 1989, combining Lela-Lela and Sai-Liza into a Hannibal release called Kwasa Kwasa. Boyd's interest led to Kanda's successful North American tour in 1989, which included an appearance at the prestigious New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. By then, however, Diblo had departed. His work with Aurlus Mabele had helped win a Maracas d'Or, and in Loketo he would be co-leader. Both Diblo and Kanda had prospered from their collaboration. But after recording Sai-Liza each went his own way.
