    Hey Frank, this guy volcanic brown was my hero, one tough prospector, as you mentioned died looking for a lost mine, cut his own toes off from frostbite! He ended up dying looking for that mine!

    For sure there's copper in there. The copper mine just about a mile behind our Mi house caved a few years back but we've been in a few others. They are fascinating, the history is fascinating, the rocks are fascinating! I wish I were younger.

    Well that was a different explore the mine seemed to wander off all over the place, looked a little bit dangerous too, but it didn’t deter you two. The water was so crystal clear you could see all the old timbering below. Ben follows in your footsteps Frank, he just carried on through that icy water as far as he could get and he got some interesting footage. Thanks for another great episode and stay safe.

    That guy who said powder ain't good, was half right. I mean, we take out German mines that are completely inert here in Europe, and some that do explode. It's a case by case basis, and generally, you just take precautions because all it takes in a pile of wet powder is a single nugget of dry one (to whomever read Robinson Crusoe, you'll know what i meant).

    • @exploringabandonedmines

    Frank, great exploration! It seems stories of mining in North America are full of colorful (or crazy) characters with all sorts of wacky plots and plans.
    I liked your demonstration of butterfly coiling rope - have you tried the same method, but instead putting the rope on your shoulders and doing it that way?

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I would like to try and put it in a rope bag and have it feed out without tangling though!

    • @DesertDogExploring
      @DesertDogExploring 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rope bags work well for that.
      There are a lot of ways to properly/safely pack a rope bag. Two resources are the National Park Service Technical Rescue Handbook (tinyurl.com/yanaemz6) and some publications from the British Columbia Search and Rescue Association (tinyurl.com/yabstju8).
      Yeah, I know - I'm one of those goofy Americans that does not automatically think "Canadian = inferior". The NPS folks (especially Yosemite) and the BC folks are both top notch professional groups to learn from.

    So is the reason that some mines are so uneven like this one because they mined through the veins of minerals and the rock walls are what's left, or are these natural caves that the miners were using to get deeper into the mountain?

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Everything in a mine is usually removed by the miners and not natural. The texture of the ribs and back depends on a number of things but mainly on the type of rock it passes through.

    That's a mine with a lot of character. So there was no sign of any hoisting works, head frame, or support buildings? I know the weather in BC can take it's toll on man made structures but it seems like there would have been some indication on the surface of how they removed the waste rock as well as the ore. Great video regardless. Thanks and happy holidays.

    How on earth would those old timers been able to work that mine? Would it have started out as caverns?

  • @wingwangtingtang
    @wingwangtingtang 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    No way the guy did all that by himself he probably paid a crew to help and keep it hush what they found.
    He obviously found something worth digging for with how extensive that is I'd say crazy volcanic Brown maybe isn't so crazy after all

    I just heard of volcanic brown today, was he 76 years old when he started that mine or was he 76 when he died?

      Volcanic Brown died in 1930 chasing Shlumach's gold. He was getting close to finding the lost mine when he disappeared. Searchers set out to find him, Brown, but they only found his campsite ...and eleven ounces of nuggets. No mr. Brown.

    it may just be my eyes but to me it looks like you missed some gold visible above you in the shaft at the 6:26 mark.

    • @exploringabandonedmines
      @exploringabandonedmines  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is very rare that any Gold is visible in a hard rock mine.........certainly if you could see it on a video the miners would have seen it!
