Good job making this video. I wanted a more in-depth breakdown when I learned that this machine only has one filter. I could literally smell the bad dog smell in the cyclone portion of the vacuum and wanted to know how to clean it. Thanks.
All that dust you see under the cyclones does not matter, it’s supposed to be there. It means the cyclones are doing their job in removing dust from the air flow.
The design flaw is having the clean air pipe from the cyclones to the motor routed through the centre and bottom of the big bin. So when you empty it, static from inside the clean air pipe draws up fine dust and hair. You put back on the machine and turn it on, the dust in the pipe will go through motor and clog the filter. This causes the suction loss. The cyclones actually do work very well.
Qasim Mir the static dust that gets blown into the motor is going to have minimal impact if any, the main issue is people overfilling them and blocking the shroud which causes reduced air speed and particle rejection effectiveness. The few cases of damaged Cinetic vacs are usually down to user error.
Mine was clogged as hell , had to replace it.
Absolutely the fine dust does matter this is another proof that James Dyson has lied to people throughout the development of his worthless piece of crap vacuum that is overrated overpriced I had for Dyson's and I will never own another damn Dyson ever again. I've had this Dyson this was my last Dyson that I purchased the thing kept clogging up so finally I had to take it in and they had to take the whole thing apart to clean it and I'll keep in mind I'm just by myself no animals but I do vacuum every single day come to find out there is another filter down in the motor as well that you cannot get you that has to be professionally removed and cleaned or replaced and they don't tell you about that this vacuum is a piece of crap don't buy Dyson vacuums don't support the live at James Dyson has produced. It was going to cost me literally $120 for them to fix my Dyson I told him I said take the piece of shit and throw it in the trash. That's exactly what they did
Great informative video. It's pretty evident that Dyson themelves know they've screwed up since they've gone 'back' to filters from the supposedly revolutionary cinetic science technology.
Thank you so much for this video! I got a used Animal vac that needed minor repair, changed the HEPAs but it still smelled AWFUL. Thanks to your video the cyclones got the thorough cleaning they so badly deserved. We're talking like a full cm of accumulation in spots! I couldn't believe the motor wasn't blown. Works like a beast now, though!

great vid...inspired me to spend 5 hours cleaning the disgusting canister from our Dyson. Would add that the white rubber "nozzles" all had some mold/mildew/something disgusting & smelly so took them off & cleaned them which a HUGE PITA but helped reduce the stink.

I'm actually debating what model of Dyson to buy because we have 2 dogs and I want a vacuum that will kick ass getting dust and hair up. But after watching this I'm convinced to buy the kind WITH A FILTER!!!! I'd rather wash or replace a filter because I can't accept that it actually traps dust and mold spores without a filter. Great video!
If you want great cleaning performance and longevity with pet hair I'd highly recommend looking into Sebo. We've seen people go up to 30 years of use on them. Plus if you buy from an authorized dealer in your area Sebo provides a 7 year parts and labor warranty and 10 year motor warranty.
You should've immersed the whole cylinder in water preferably hand tolerable hot with detergent then soak and rinse thoroughly , then use an electric leaf blower to dry most of the water out and then disassembled so you don't have to breathe in dust which may contain mould and other bacteria.

Why wash it or vacuum the dust when using an air compressor is the most effective way? Good strip down video regardless.
The dust build up under the cyclones does not affect performance, if you think about how the machine actually works, the air does not flow down there, only the dust does. The dust which is filtered out by the cyclones is so small and light that it does build up there, but over time it falls off and is emptied with the bin. This is actually not a design flaw as you claim but rather a very deliberate design.
We've had the Dyson ball for 4 years now. I use an air compressor to blow out the cyclone to keep it running. However, it's nice to know that it comes apart to the point where I can use the compressor to clean out the inside of it as well. A good instruction video. Thanks!
It baffles me how the cyclone and filter issues have been documented and known only a couple months after Dyson launched the Cinetic models... and yet they're still sold in big box stores for full price.
To me, the only Dysons worth buying nowadays are the cordless, and it's been that way ever since the DC41 came out.
Yeah, they just don't care from the look of things. It's honestly hilarious how badly they fucked this up, a Fantom will run for years with no premotor filter and only two cyclones... But not these machines.
Their R&D department has really gone down the shitter in the past 5-6 years - from skimping on build quality from the third-gen Ball uprights onward, to what they did with these Cinetic models, and then to doing a horrendous job with developing a competent robot vacuum... I'd take a secondhand DC25 over this crap any day.
Even the DC24/5 machines have had issues especially with motors at least in my experience. Though I do agree with you, never thought the day would come where I'd be saying I miss the DC07... I figured from the start the eye 360 would be a mess, I'll keep my Neato and Roomba.

We actually bought a second hand DC25 animal but the motor in the cleanerhead was burned out when we got it ;-;
We had one UP14's at work, wasn't sucking up anything and kept tripping the bypass, took it apart and half the cyclone tips were completely clogged, the amount of dirt and crap inside it was insane. Cleaned it, dried it out, it works okay for now, but it'll be headed to the ecycle heap shortly. Terrible design, would never buy it or any of their products again.
I wonder if this machine can be used without the HEPA filters installed provided the filters (I assume) are exhaust only. Probably would increase suction and relieve strain on the motor.

Although, I was not able to take apart that last part because my fork bit (like you said) was not long enough. I cleaned what I could really good so does it matter if I could not get that part off?
Also, there is a small ring that you said normally you should not be taking it apart often. That part on mine did break but stayed intact so can I just hope and pray it stays when I put it back together? I hate for that only piece to be a deal breaker and cost me $125

So long as the piece is intact you should be fine. Just place it as best you can where it should sit and I doubt you'll have any problems.

Great video, You speak of “dyson in their infinite wisdom” but yet the filters were clean besides for a bit of carbon from the motor…huh seems as if the Cinetic nozzles did exactly what they were supposed to do.
Just from a users input I have had this same model for 6 or so years now with an indoor German Shepard and let me tell you the trick is to vacuum often, like OFTEN as in 3-5 times a week if not daily. What ruins these machines is the owner who vacuums once or twice a month that overloads the machine with a barrage of fine pet dander that backs up into the nozzle assemblies.
Mine actually worked better with a T7 from the Husky precision set from Home Depot. To hit the top part I used a precision cleaning tool from my tool kit to loosen the major clumps, then hit it with an air compressor.
I have UP14. The bucket release spring mechanism does not retract so that the bucket will not latch back into place. Any thoughts?
The gasket that breaks at 3:40, where do you find a replacement? I can only find a bin seal gasket on parts websites.
Dyson doesn't make many small internal parts. That's one of them, simply push it back together with the pieces aligned that's basically the best that can be done without replacing the entire canister.
if the seal in the top of that inner tube (5:20) is broken, does that reduce the performance? any way to replace that seal?
It's basically impossible to open the machine without breaking that seal. Can't be replaced because Dyson only sells the entire canister assembly. When you put it back together just line up the seal and friction and bring screwed back in place should take care of it. I don't think you'd ever notice any real loss in performance.

This one is too hard to clean. What machine do you recommend that is easy to clean and very good in terms of suction, etc.
I suggest skipping anything bagless entirely so you don't have to worry as much about cleaning. If you've got your heart set on bagless bascially the only current bagless machine that is well made and designed is the WMJ Workhorse (formerly Amway Cleartrak). I have a video up on my channel of that vacuum.
@@FantomLightning what machine with a bag is best for low shag carpet with dog hair and dust in an apartment. I dont require bagless. I have the dyson animal and it smalls bad and is too hard to completely clean. .
@@donnarosenzweig3751 There are a lot of great bagged machines so much of it comes down to personal preference. Something like a Sebo G4 is a bagged machine that cleans well, is very durable, and the main body of the machine can be taken off to be washed/rinsed in the sink should you ever need/want to.

You can literally just fill the canister with water and dish soap a few times and drain it out, let it dry for a couple hours, then it works like new. No need to unscrew everything.

Wow, it is a shame that such an expensive vacuum is so unserviceable! Seeing how easy the seals broke makes me want to run away from this product. Also, seems to be a little over-engineered with lots of areas for dust to get trapped, and you can't easily clean that dust out!
An acquaintance used to work demos for Dyson at Costco, so I got the animal and allergy for a bargain $200 ($699 at the big box stores). What a piece of junk. Unbelievably heavy and poorly designed, not to mention the dust that flies all over. Not great for my allergies and asthma. I spend more time cleaning the vacuum than vacuuming. Suction was great at first but not worth all the trouble, especially since it is not working as well. I took it apart but did not attempt cleaning the cyclone which, sadly, is where all the dust and crud is located. Even after watching this video, I may not get it back together correctly. I cannot imagine paying $699 for this junk. Oh - and the cord constantly knots. No matter how much I stretch it out, it eventually wraps around itself into a big knot. My friend quit - even she said she could not promote this junk anymore.
I rebuilt a Dyson canister vacuum, the DC39, and I love it. Didn't expect it to work out so well. $40 for the used vacuum cleaner, then $40 for a new HEPA filter. Very clean, really strong.
This Dyson upright, though, is a mess. Smells awful.
Those cyclone tips are self cleaning on the inside. They prevent the exits from blocking by vibration. It doesn’t need to be cleaned in those areas the same way a vehicle exhaust system doesn’t need to be cleaned. Car manufacturers figured out how to keep the exhaust functioning, and Dyson figured out how to keep their machines in working condition without a tear down clean. Unless of course there is absolute ignorance which can negatively affect both situations.
i found a Kenmore destiny plus 12 am moter for $20 on creglist in my towmn it comes with power hand tools should i get it

They don't exist. The greedy bastards at Dyson only sell the entire cyclone assembly as one piece.

It's an air relief. It will open when there's a bad blockage to ensure the motor can get airflow.

i knew it not to buy dyson vacuums. i m sticking with Vax or other vacuum cleaners you can modd and keep clean easy.
This is why I hate modern dysons they are a lot more difficult to clean out. My older Dyson dc07 and dc25 is so easy to clean out.
This is a totally defective product IMO. Any vacuum or other household cleaning machine (dishwasher, washing machine, vacuum) that can’t be taken apart and serviced is destined to fail and be landfill bound. The fact that these machines are $600 just adds to the insult.
Never buy the dyson with this design. The dirt will stay in the vacuum from the cyclones for the life of the vacuum. Just get a shark and the filters can be switched out as needed to refresh.

I think I'd rather watch a new dad unbox a Sears swing set and explain every screw and bracket than go through this again...did you ever get it back together and what did you do about all the gaskets and seals you broke in this process? I don't think this is normal maintenance...it's just someone with too much time on their hands and wanting to experiment with something they know nothing about. This could be done in 3 minutes if you jump through your "learning as you go" process. Try it again.
This video is not about cleaning, it is just about disassembly and for little to no added value. Think! People watching this want to know how to clean the machine to increase performance. Not how to unscrew every screw possible.
How exactly do you think you would be able to clean this machine without taking it apart? Just about anything needs to be fully disassembled to truly be cleaned and so it can dry without fear of mold.
To any who are a tad OCD like me .. that inner seal that gets ripped apart during disassembly (@ 5:22 in this vid), i scraped it off and replaced it by supergluing a rubber band around it. It worked and fit tight during reassembly. So far so good.
Good to know!! This was my question. Everything else came apart like a charm except the last piece. I don’t have a drill to hold the tork piece in there to unscrew it.
Dyson says "no filters to wash or replace", obviously this don't need filters bc it's designed to keep all the dirt inside the cyclone HAHAHAHA
After watching this I think I may have completely rendered the one my mother has as useless now.
I didn't know that you had to be so thorough with the disassembly of the cyclone.
I took it outside and squirted it out with the hose until the water ran clean. Took awhile but it did eventually run clean. Do I have to break it down now to make sure the tiny little cyclone nozzles are completely dry now?? Is there a way to ensure they're complete dryness before reassembly WITHOUT breaking it down the way you did?
Or should I just tell my mother that someone ran off with it and quietly bury the remains in the back yard when everyone's asleep??

Some of the older Dysons that aren't so constrained on the inside you used to be able to get away with that. It still wasn't a good idea but a bunch of "mommy bloggers" got a hold of it and ran with it.
For this one I'd say it you want it to dry out without having any issue with mold you'll want to take it all apart. Most likely even if the water ran clear you'll probably still find some muddy/dirty areas when you take it apart.
So there's dust inside the vacuum cleaner.....shocking!.....
Do you know of anyone that supplies the foam gaskets for Dyson cyclones? I’ve known how to take these apart but our gaskets finally ripped this last cleaning. I’d rather not buy a new cyclone for $150 for a 8 year old vacuum 😅.
I’ve had my big ball cinetic animal for about a year and a half and I’ve never had any issues at all with it. It’s not made like the original dysons. It’s all a bit flimsy and bendy but I’ve looked after mine and so far it’s looked after me , I have two longer haired labradoodles and it picks everything up just fine
Thanks for this. I've had this model for 6 years, and overtime the amount of times I've had to wipe down the mesh because that air vent would open up and start hissing has increased steadily. It's gotta to the point where i couldn't even finish the living room without have to wipe it down several times. Hopefully this fixes it for a while, but I may end up just buying a new cyclone, only $100, and hope the vacuum lasts another 6 years.
I have one of these vacuums and came to look for cleaning tips. Thank goodness I never got rid of my 1989 Hoover! I remove the bag and dump it without dust and crap flying around me because I dump in outside trash can. Damn, love my Hoover.

Thanks for the video, I just bought this vacuum used for $150.00 - maybe I shouldn’t bought it, anyways if the gaskets break during removal, what do you use to replace them? To take it apart I bought 8 Pieces 1/4 Inch Magnetic Hex Shank T8-T40 6 Inch Length S2 Steel Torx Security Head Screwdriver Drill Set Bits on Amazon and these worked great. When I had everything washed, I just put it in the Sun for a while until NO water was left.
Where are you located and would you be willing to dissasemble and clean mine my vacuum like this for a service charge? i have the same one. lmk
Guess im lucky been using mine 5 years with 0 maintenance until this year. Brush broke but thats it. Ive had 2 long haired cats and one long haired dogs and ive never seen any noticable loss of suction...gonna replace the filters this year anyways just because i figure it wont hurt
thanks, now I see those nozzles. feels like Dyson is intentionally leaving out the Cinetic nozzles on their cordless for the future, for constant upgrades. Considering the fine stainless mesh on their cordless products, it seems unlikely these nozzles get clogged even on weaker cordless power

if you have heard of the dustless wet dry vacuum they say it only filters down to 0.3 microns with is the same as the dyson kinetic lol
I have one cat and one cockatoo and wish I would have seen this video BEFORE I purchased this Dyson. Mine is the animal and allergy Cinetic ball and looks just like this one. I thought it would be great for sweeping up the cat hair & bird dander etc as birds are constantly preening their new feathers (the sheaths around the new growing feathers create a lot of dander requiring frequent sweeping) and After only 5 or 6 months, mine has lost significant suction (no obstructions after a very thorough complete exam as well as cleaning of the beater bar) and I imagine this is what is occurring. Makes me disgusted that Dyson engineered such crap and are passing it off as great innovative bagless technology for dealing with pet dander and allergens. How the hell can you continue to vacuum long term with this when these filters on either side of the motor will obviously clog up with the finer particulates, not to mention the build up with all those vibrating cones ? This is a high dollar disposable vacuum...Ide be better off using my dam shop vac. Very disgusted and pissed about the con job because now I am left at the moment having to make another decision about a large item purchase in a rather hurried time frame & I wasn't expecting this.
Best advice I can give is make sure the next purchase is a machine with a bag. If you're willing to spend around what you did for the Dyson something from Miele, Sebo, or Simplicity/Riccar will all out perform the Dyson, and can last for up to 30 years or so depending on how they're taken care of.
The best advice is to contact Dyson customer service and invoke the 5 year warranty. They will refurbish the machine for you instead of requiring you to buy a new vacuum cleaner.
Do want Fantom said. Bagged is much better if you have allergies and or pets.
Kirby is my personal favorite bit Miele, Riccar, Royal and Sanitare are good choices too.
I have had my dyson for a few years and even did a trade in for a new machine. honestly I don't like them all that much either. When you take out the hose there is this super pointy piece that stick up and if your not paying attention and you bend over fro the chord... bam... its all "Vlad the imapailer" all up in here! Also the suction has dwindled down to almost nothing and I have to get my swiller out when I'm done with the dyson.. I won't be taking the WHLOE dang thing apart to do a simple cleaning.. that's nuts.. Im looking for a new suggestion.. I do like the bagless so i can clean it easier with out the "vacuum funk smell" they all seem to get after a while.
