On the 1st of May 1995, the body of a female was discovered in Champaign County, Illinois. Almost 25 years have passed and she remains nameless.
I just want to say before I get any negative comments about listing names in a large portion of the video, please bear in mind that despite the fact these women are not Champaign County Jane Doe, they are still missing, therefore having their faces out there is important. Please take that into consideration before commenting.

BREAKING CASE UPDATE: Champaign County Jane Doe has been IDENTIFIED. She was Keri Lyn Wyant, aged 23, who went missing from New Athens, Illinois. She was born in 18th October 1972 and she was last known to be working at a carnival. She gave birth to a son in the mid 1990s, who tragically passed away in an accident when he was 7 years old. Keri spent time in Arkansas, specifically Little Rock, and returned to Illinois. She lived in Galva and Peoria. The Unknown Doe Project, a television show, reached out to authorities and covered costs regarding DNA testing among other things, which concluded in identification.

@@redceltnet These women are still missing. It only takes one person to recognise one of them for a case to potentially move forward. Good to know you find missing people 'white noise'. How would you feel if a family member was missing? Wouldn't you want their face out there?

Well done that you share those faces and names. Those women vanished decades ago. Their stories aren’t just cold-they’re darn near in permafrost. Your publishing their disappearances brings their stories alive, if only for a brief moment, and may still trigger someone’s memory-of a sighting, of a story at a party, of the report of another Jane Doe. It’s important. Please keep doing what you do, exactly as you do it.

Happens everyday. What I don't get, is how the really young ladys aren't even notified as missing from there family, much less dead. Like how is nobody responsible for these girls? Somebody. A teacher, foster parent, sibling, classmate, friend should know who this jane doe is/was. Somebody had 2 be responsible for there well being. Especially if they were minors.

You never know who may see this and be able to help find these women. And I very much doubt any of them disappeared intentionally. ALL of them are probably murder victims. Very sad. I hope some of these cases can be resolved at some point.

My first thought is that the Jane Doe is somehow connected to the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Perhaps a student? Perhaps the person wasn't reported as missing from Champaign-Urbana, but was reported from her original home town, confusing the situation. I hope they can use DNA to identify this woman & to bring her killer to justice.

This is a minor matter compared to the subject at hand, Laura, but U of I is headquartered in Urbana, not Champaign, although the campus crosses the boundary, and the two adjacent towns are correctly referred to as Urbana-Champaign, not the other way around. Champaign was originally west Urbana, so why should it now get top billing? When I was a kid growing up there in the fifties, my dad was a professor at U of I, and nobody in Urbana called it Champaign-Urbana. Those nominally in charge these days have changed everything all over the country now and brainwashed the pliable young to follow suit, which is why their politics are so screwed up. That which we learned in our lives they think is useless to them so they simply ignore it, and as a result are clueless about darn near everything of importance, like History. Some college kids (at NYU, I believe) were questioned by Jesse Watters and they didn't recognize pictures of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Marilyn Monroe, even FRANK SINATRA! One of my childhood friends from the fifties is also irked at the new way of referring to the twin cities. I haven't seen him in sixty years but I spoke to his mom two or three times and she told me it bothered him, too.

Jake McClintock .....I was just in the Carle hospital with a broken femur. Small world. Anyway, you have to admit that now it is called Champaign-Urbana and the U of I would have been contacted by the authorities at the time. Surely. She would have missed classes, missed graduation, missed student loan repayments, missed rent etc. Something to raise the alarm. I mean, someone that age would not just not be reported. She may have been involved with the U of I but why dump her body in Thomasboro? That’s a tiny tiny town. Blink and you would miss it. Condit Township is even smaller (had to look it up as I never heard of it before). Surely if she was married, some guy would have reported his wife missing. Still, I think the person must have known the area. Maybe it’s my inexperience at committing any crime, let alone murder and disposing of a body but I think that area is too open to have just had someone stumble across it without fear of being seen in someone else’s field because farmers talk to each other. Additionally, dead at least a year meant the latest she could have been murdered or disposed of was April of the previous year. Farmers are not in their fields before that. If it was in the winter before, then it’s barren and possibly slick/muddy. If it was spring-fall then farmers are coming and going. Who would know if you would not be seen, unless you knew the area and maybe the kind of traffic on the road.
      Still, very interesting case!
      Great video DC!

This should also be a warning to us that safety isn't about locked doors or hidden weapons. Sadly, we may never hear good news for these women or many, many more but hopefully we become more aware of our surroundings.
Please listen to that little voice in your head or feeling in your gut that a situation is unsafe or odd enough to make you need to get out of there. Don't second guess it.
Don't add to your danger by taking short cuts through deserted streets, dark forests or poorly lit car parking areas. Get into your car and lock yourself in and then settle your hand bag and keys. Lit areas are always better/safer than dark ones. Having a man to go with you maybe a safer bet but no guarantee. Of course make sure you trust him too. A girl friend or two is a good idea but still go into well lit areas.
One of the greater lessons about intuition for me was/is my first reaction is the right one. The guy coming towards you that makes your skin crawl, no matter how "nice" he seems to be in the following 20 minutes will revert to that as soon as the opportunity arises. Groups of men are not safer, in fact worse.
I wish such knowledge could have saved even one of them but more importantly if it saves one of you then share it and add anything else that helped. I've talked myself out of believing a gut reaction a few times and have paid a high price. I'm lucky not to have paid the ultimate price! Intuition is given to us for a reason.
Men, I'm not lumping all of you into the "beware" category. There are terrifying things that happen to you too. Again, use your intuition, gut instinct and commonsense about dark alleys and so on.
In the meantime, look out for each other. You may not be able to defend someone else but you can call police, record what's going or note odd behaviours.
Dark Curiosities you do far more than you know, thank you. 💙

      @rmorell28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Excellent advice. May I add to your suggestions?
Never let yourself be taken against your will to the second crime scene. Nothing good will come of it, statistics have shown us. Scream, flail your arms, fall to the ground in a limp pile, etc. The moments of abduction are the riskiest for an offender. If he gets you to his basement, you're going to suffer.
Use those locks! All of them. Lock windows, cars, doors, garages, etc. It's your first line of defense and its simple, effective deterrence is totally underrated.
Live alone? Work alone? Strangers need not know that. Leave second-hand men's work boots on your porch. Predators notice details like that and tend not to risk confrontations with a male.
Afraid of someone creepy knocking at your door? Rather than acting like you're not there (which he probably knows you are) try an offensive move instead. Scream to your imaginary male spouse. Yell over your shoulder, "Jim/John/Larry! Get the fuck over here and deal with this asshole at the door!"
Crazy and loud works. "Get off my property/Let go of me YOU SON OF A BITCH I'M NOT FUCKING PLAYING WITH YOU! NOW!" And mean it. Make a loud, uncomfortable, and public scene.
Many victims of violent crime later reflect on the moments leading up to the event. Many realize that their intuition told them something was not quite right, but, for social propriety or fear of seeming racist or fear of embarrassment, they DIDN'T WANT TO SEEM RUDE. Better to mistakenly 'overreact' than face the unspeakable horrors of abduction.
Most likely it is only you that will be able to save you. Think quickly and act immediately.

It blows my mind when I hear stories of Jane and John Does. How can someone live a life and disappear and no one reports them missing for so long?? My heart sinks thinking no one would miss someone as if their life didn’t matter. My hope is that the dna from contributors like me can help track down relatives. There is a new law that DNA can not be used unless contributors give special consent before hand. So if you’re new to submitting your DNA make sure you give consent. You never know how helpful it may one day be in solving crimes! Some people are not happy DNA can be used for this purpose. I can understand to a point but thinking about the bigger purpose, I don’t mind my DNA being used in this manner.

I appreciate your comment, but the issue with comments like this is that they assume that every single person has family or friends who care about them. That is a very privileged position to view things from. I've been involved in sex work, drug addiction, and homelessness, and the overwhelming majority of the people I met in those scenes had no family to speak of, let alone family who actually cared about what happened to them. My own partner (who is a wonderful person) has parents and a sister who would never report him missing, even if they hadn't heard from him in 10 years. He has literally no relationship with his "family" at all. I know this may be hard to believe, but not all families are strong, loving units. Lots of people have nobody. That is why, for me, it is so easy to see why there are so many unidentified people.

  • @pulaski1

There are many reasons why people disappear, or choose to disappear. Some are fleeing abusive family members or spouse and don't want to be found. Others really have "disappeared" (been murdered, trafficked, or suffered a fatal accident or disease while out of touch) and can do so without being missed because it is not uncommon for someone to "just pack up and leave", perhaps after leaving school, after leaving college, or to join, or after leaving the military. .... And many of the itinerants you see either downtown, hitching near the interstate, or riding a freight train are people who have "disappeared" from family and friends.
Sadly it is not uncommon for a child to leave home on reaching 18, or sooner, because of a "bad situtation" at home, either because they were abused or just feel disconnected from their parents and siblings.
When my mother dies I suspect that I will drift even further apart from my sister - she has not been much interested in staying in touch, and as the years pass she gets ever more distant, and her being 3,500 miles away doesn't help us to keep in touch; oh, and she hates Farcebook. It makes me sad, but conversely it doesn't seem to concern her. And if she fell off the face of the earth it would be at least many months before I noticed, and after our mother dies, I might never notice. The same is probably true of me from her point of view.

Thank you for bringing these cases to the public eye. There have been 2 missing girls here in my area ( Oscoda Michigan) since the 1970’s and the girls sister still posts fliers all over near where people from out of town come up to go fishing and hunting. It breaks my heart to see them. I pray every night that these women’s families find them and get some answers.

I was in college with Tricia Reitler in Marion, IN. It was astonishing how fast the college staff decided she just ran off with some guy. They were all wrong, of course. Victim blaming, as usual. Nothing has been found - or at least, nothing has been announced - since the search immediately after she went missing. I think of her every single spring. The day she went missing was the first really nice, sunny, warm spring day after a hard, gloomy winter. Love to Tricia and her family. Thank you, DC, for including Tricia.

I know I’m two years late on this comment and it’s hardly the most important thing in a missing persons video, but I have to say your pronunciation of “Oneida” (New York) is better than any others I’ve heard. Being from upstate NY, I can tell you it is mangled constantly. You were very close- it’s actually pronounced “O-ny-duh.”
That was probably silly to even mention but I wanted to give credit where credit is due. I pray all of these people have their cases resolved one day soon.

well if she was a mom and had marriage means that you could rule out half the women or more that don't ...but then there's the fact some went missing years before the body was found so it brings up the issue of ...she could've been marriage in the time she went missing and had a child
There's also the ring was it made anywhere could track down the jeweler by serial number

Women, evolution put into humanity a sixth sense because it keeps you alive. That little twinge you get in the back of your mind when you think something's not quiet right with your surroundings; you know, those hairs on your neck that stand on end--dont ignore these things. Your mind may not pick up on the subtle hints that danger gives, but your body will. That guy that seemed cool the other night when you were drinking a little, but now....somethings just a little bit creepy about the way he stares a split second too long?? Or maybe there's something different in the air, unexplainable, that gives you a sense of foreboding... If its just false paranoia, then you've lost nothing. But if it isnt, and you're senses are picking up on the scumbag youre with's bad intent...then, well, your world gets torn apart.

Wait, that body was found on a country road? That would be kind of a stretch to dump someone in a field in broad daylight. People drive down those roads and you could get caught. At night, you would need to know the area enough to not get lost in a dark barren area in the dead of night. Great video!

Am more a 411 follower. And that which defys all logical or rational explanation.. But your site popped up among the listings so gave that vid (the murder of a family camping in 1974..) the time and subbed. As your documentative work on that one. Is of the callabure I prefure, over the more tacky main streams approach. Tastefully respective and with tact to the victim/s and (no doubt) families. Dealing with only the facts presented., and only opinion or speculation, when you specify it to be. However. And out of your control..! That can't be said for the comments section. Which tells a lot about the kind of audiences, any one's podcast or blog tends to attract or appeals too. As I am a man. I have no time for the greatly generalized:- bitter and twisted, man bashing!! Will stay subbed because it's imperative that sites like yours reach a greater audience., and might even lend closure too and for some! Respectfully.

I think it's worth mentioning that the vast majority of kidnaps and murders are by people known to the victim, not strangers. That doesn't invalidate your point, and of course this case predates widespread use of the internet. I think this highlights that we should be aware and alert in most scenarios and teach each other and help each other to combat the risks present.
