No, it's not "much better". I don't know in which German cars you've sat in, and in which parallel universe it happened, but the only German cars in the segment are the VW Passat, which is light years ahead of Kia and is a proper premium level car in terms of the interior, and the second car is Opel Insignia, which is also better than Kia. But those are both more expensive than Kia. There is no German car at the same price, so again, I don't know which ones you're talking about. That being said, the Kia interior is very good, and is better than other non-premium cars like Citroen C5, Peugeot 508, Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis, etc. It can't match the Renault Talisman, VW Passat or Mazda 6, but again, those are more expensive.

Except that's not the point, because you can get the Optima with light grey / black combination and beige interior too on most markets. On top of that, the quality of materials and fit and finish is amongs the best in class, almost at a premium class level.
This interior is fantastic IMO. Idk about the UK, in the US this is still a "cheaper" alternative to Toyota, Honda, etc. and the interior is bounds nicer.

Here in Australia, you can get the 2 litre turbocharged GT in red leather. The base model comes with a 2.4 litre petrol. If you want a diesel then one will need to get an i40 for this size car in the Hyundai Kia family, here in Oz. The latest Sonata also has the two petrol variations in 2 litre turbocharged or atmo 2.4 We are hanging in for the Kia Stinger and the new Genesis range. 😊

I just brought a demo MY16 Si (base model in Oz) with 6,000kms on the odometer. I flew to Darwin and drove it back to Alice. A week later drove it on a tour of Kakadu, Darwin, Litchfield, Katherine and back to Alice with a family of four on board. Thumbs up for highway cruising, comfortable, passing caravans and roadtrains was fuss free and fuel efficient. Every day of our tour which included darwin urban registered anywhere between 6.9 to 7.8kms/litre, with the worst figure from Katherine to Kakadu Aerora included an 80kms road trip to Gunlom gravel, deep dirt and corrugations 2WD road, which we found out later hadn't been recently maintain, "you would have been better off on the 4WD Magok road as that had been recently maintained". So back in The Alice and urban and suburban driving. Nice around town and I have ventured no where near the level of fuel consumption claimed by Kia, but much more frugal. But Alice is flat. From me, my near new Optima gets a big thumbs up. And it turns heads around town, too.
Most of the car reviews done by carbuyer and fifth gear are always biased against American and Asian cars. That annoys me a lot. But if they are reviewing a European car they would even ignore most of the downsides . The optima is much better in looks and styling as compared to the shot passat.
This is nice. Just gone out of production. Currently on a 5th gen where the front grill looks similar to the ford mustang. Anyways nice car underrated.
Double clutch gearboxes are more efficient now than manual ones. They are nearly the same weight as manual boxes, but computer controlled quick gear changes, and the fact the gearbox knows when the best time to change gear is, is why a lot of modern auto's are more efficient. Audis S ironic gearboxes make the cars quicker as well.
I don't know what kinds of 2l sedan you're talking about that consumes 10-12l/100km , but that is INSANE fuel consumptions, that's what you get with V8's with 500+ hp nowadays. No 2l sedan in the last 15 years has had an average fuel consumption above 10, and a 4 year old one can easily drop below 7l/100km if you drive it regularly without trying too hard to be efficient. Again, you're wrong about manuals being more efficient, they're just not, no matter how efficiently you drive them, it's still not as efficient as modern dual clutch automatics. And trust me, as a mechanical engineer who works in the automotive industry, I know what I'm talking about.
Mentioning ISOFIX in your reviews is as pointless as mentioning front airbags, ABS or ESC - they're mandated as standard equipment on all new cars by law since 2014...

What I look for in a cars interior is comfort, build quality and functionality and importantly how it appears to be able to withstand years of use. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the interior of this car on the whole with the exception of the glossy center console which will attract dust, fingerprints and scratches. I own an Audi A3 which is regarded by these so called review channels to have one of the best cabins in the industry. The dash is basically just one solid slab of black rubber with some dials and vents poking through it. Everything is black but they didn't complain. Not knocking my cars interior as this is exactly the sort of interior I like but it's no different from the aesthetic the Optima is going for. Filing a dash with fussy elements, multiple layers and stupid materials like piano black plastic is a pain in the ass to maintain and keep looking nice. I want functional and minimalist so fuck off with the trend to make everything jazzy. To be honest carbuyer, whatcar, autoexpress and all the other mainstream car review (more like a summary) are an absolute joke. How can you possibly review a car in under 5 minutes? If you want a proper in depth look check out Autogefühl where Thomas goes into lots of detail into the things that matters to everyday drivers. Nowhere does excessive engine noise come into the picture. He gives a POV drive in multiple conditions and it holds up well.
Biased review....This is not a competitor to the Superb, it's for the Octavia (check the size!). So if you were reviewing the Octavia you wouldn't say it costs more than the Superb. The steering has 3 modes... so you can set it up the be heavier! As for the interior complaints, there are enough comments here. For me the biggest f*ckup Kia did on this model is the side vents, they are fake, they aren't functional, so they don't need to be there.
Better check the size yourself :) Optima is 20cm longer than Octavia, same as Superb, wide and height too, so definitely this car is not in Octavia class.

i don't know about the UK, but in the US we have other interior colors than black. it has a really nice off-white quilted leather option. also we don't have the tiny engines or the "rattly diesel"
She kinda skipped half the car and its features. Speed limit control, Blind Spot System, adaptive cruise control at the higher tier (DUAL) air control mind you - IDK about GB, but here you also get a FULL SIZE 18" alloy wheel below the trunk floor as a reserve. What about the backseat cupholder/armrest? Heated AND cooled front seats. Heated passenger back seats.... Anyhow, if you don't like black, how about you go for the whiter leather interior instead? On a side note: this car with panoramic sunroof (that can open) makes it a lot nicer inside. I also don't know how much you drink, but my 2015 model has ample room for cups and small bottles. As for the steering, I've got economic, normal and sport mode as well as paddle shifters. Sure, that's on the automatic versions, but people buying the high end will go for auto anyway - just because it's easy. Even though this particular one may not have it, should at least mention the possibilities this car has. Side note: yes, I do drive stick shift, too.
I'm sure Ginny will take the hate & criticisms from people with zero experience of car reviewing, zero experience of television, broadcasting and Media into consideration- then just laugh. Some of us are engineers who work in the automotive industry. Some of us know 50 times more about cars than any journalist like her. So what she says doesn't mean it's absolutely true. To be perfectly frank, most of what she says is AN OPINION too. I'm afraid her technical knowledge of cars is not high enough to be able to talk about them completely objectively. People take automotive journalists and what they say too seriously. They're like sports journalists, just because talk a lot about it, doesn't mean they really understand it in depth or are good at it themselves, and in order to fully objectively talk about cars, you have to understand them in depth, not just drive them for a day or two and then come to a conclusion, usually just based on a few basic specifications, price, room inside and the amount of cup holders...

Stick a camera in front of them and say action and they'd shit themselves. I suggest if people don't like the presenters style or personality they should not keep watching the channel. i really like them but they don't sell very well here, I think its the styling. the Hyundai version, Genesis, does really well though. i see them everywhere
Agree with the steering. I own a Kia Koup Turbo and also have tried Hyundai Volester. Both of the steerings feel fake compared to my Subaru forester. It seems they are just Korean(GANGNAM) style?... It did take some time to get used to. Back to Optima (K5), considering the stand out interia (I peronally like it A LOT) & exterior, unbeatable warranty, and loads of features it comes with, I don't think it's expensive AT ALL.
i have the Kia Optima, mk1, top car, love it made me laugh about her last "complaint", about the tone when you turn it off, etc, listen love, YOU CAN TURN THAT OFF IF YOU WANT, why don't they actually look into things like this, rather than complain about it? go in the sub section on the in-dash menu's, can turn off all the "tones" off if you want, i like them tbh, its different!
People here seem to be offended by her complaining and being harsh about the interior etc. Listen her review is just to give you a idea about the car. The sales figures say it all her or my opinion will not contribute in either success or failure of tha car. ps- i don't have a problem with black interiors.

The two gripes I have with this car are 1. there is no standard tinted windows like on the i40 (its sister car) and 2. like the i40 the most powerful diesel is 140bhp and the car weighs around 1600kgs unladen. Whilst the Sportage gets a 2.0 181bhp diesel yet this car is supposed to be the flagship car in the kia range???
I40 isn't a sister car. Hyundai don't have a large saloon segment. They have a luxury but they skip a level. I40 is related to the forte. It's just the saloon/hatch version
Jamms Sinon The Hyundai I40 is the sister car to the Kia Optima, however the optima is slightly longer but the i40 is still 4.74m long and I have been in a kia and hyundai dealership when i was comparing the two cars and they both told me that. They also share many components and same engine and there is no hatch version of a i40 its saloon and estate (tourer). Pi VN I have 2012 Passat and I am thinking about trading in my car for 2017 Optima because I think Optima is miles better in terms of interior, and exterior wise and they also have improved sportness feeling (plenty sporty enough for me)

I think the interior is quite a nice place to be, however I have to say the Germans offer an even duller interior compared to this.
You can turn off the chime and there three settings for the steering wheel weight ....
you can turn that welcome/goodbye sound off!! I had same thing on my i40, you just turn it off in the menus!

Also no mention that the Optima actually has metal door handles on the INSIDE of the doors. Even my Audi uses plastic.

Speed limit control, Blind Spot System, adaptive cruise control at the higher tier (DUAL) air control mind you - IDK about GB, but here you also get a FULL SIZE 18" alloy wheel below the trunk floor as a reserve.
What about the backseat cupholder/armrest? Heated AND cooled front seats. Heated passenger back seats....
Anyhow, if you don't like black, how about you go for the whiter leather interior instead? On a side note: this car with panoramic sunroof (that can open) makes it a lot nicer inside.
I also don't know how much you drink, but my 2015 model has ample room for cups and small bottles. As for the steering, I've got economic, normal and sport mode as well as paddle shifters. Sure, that's on the automatic versions, but people buying the high end will go for auto anyway - just because it's easy. Even though this particular one may not have it, should at least mention the possibilities this car has.
Side note: yes, I do drive stick shift, too.

I'm sure Ginny will take the hate & criticisms from people with zero experience of car reviewing, zero experience of television, broadcasting and Media into consideration- then just laugh. Ginny Buckley is legit. Just because she reviews a vehicle one way doesn't mean it's going to please everyone. But it's honest, considered and unbiased. It's ok to disagree, it's not ok to just hate on people.
i don't know about her other reviews but she is totally wrong for this one. no need of a PHD to appreciate a car a tell it as it is. this is the new interior kia recently introduce how the fuck can it be dated??? BMWs have the basically the same interior look since 2006 and she calls this dated. being unnecessary harsh doesn't make you professional at all. she better read this comments and learn from them.
Some of us are engineers who work in the automotive industry. Some of us know 50 times more about cars than any journalist like her. So what she says doesn't mean it's absolutely true. To be perfectly frank, most of what she says is AN OPINION too. I'm afraid her technical knowledge of cars is not high enough to be able to talk about them completely objectively. People take automotive journalists and what they say too seriously. They're like sports journalists, just because talk a lot about it, doesn't mean they really understand it in depth or are good at it themselves, and in order to fully objectively talk about cars, you have to understand them in depth, not just drive them for a day or two and then come to a conclusion, usually just based on a few basic specifications, price, room inside and the amount of cup holders...
+derbigpr500 yes, it's always one persons opinion, and most, if not all motoring journos are not engineers- but then how many engineers could be decent tv presenters? Stick a camera in front of them and say action and they'd shit themselves. I suggest if people don't like the presenters style or personality they should not keep watching the channel. It's so easy to tear people down, but those that do should just calm down & move on, if they are unable to watch a 6-10 minute piece and form their own opinion without throwing a fit cos they don't like the comment on the quality of the dashboard!!
But car buyers do have experience in owning cars for years on end. Ginny reveiws are valid and so are the publics.

i really like them but they don't sell very well here, I think its the styling. the Hyundai version, Genesis, does really well though. i see them everywhere

Agree with the steering. I own a Kia Koup Turbo and also have tried Hyundai Volester. Both of the steerings feel fake compared to my Subaru forester. It seems they are just Korean(GANGNAM) style?... It did take some time to get used to.
Back to Optima (K5), considering the stand out interia (I peronally like it A LOT) & exterior, unbeatable warranty, and loads of features it comes with, I don't think it's expensive AT ALL.
We are hiring one of these in Canada in a few weeks!

made me laugh about her last "complaint", about the tone when you turn it off, etc, listen love, YOU CAN TURN THAT OFF IF YOU WANT, why don't they actually look into things like this, rather than complain about it?
go in the sub section on the in-dash menu's, can turn off all the "tones" off if you want, i like them tbh, its different!

This woman is too much of a snob to properly review a car like this.
The two gripes I have with this car are 1. there is no standard tinted windows like on the i40 (its sister car) and 2. like the i40 the most powerful diesel is 140bhp and the car weighs around 1600kgs unladen. Whilst the Sportage gets a 2.0 181bhp diesel yet this car is supposed to be the flagship car in the kia range???
I40 isn't a sister car. Hyundai don't have a large saloon segment. They have a luxury but they skip a level. I40 is related to the forte. It's just the saloon/hatch version
Jamms Sinon The Hyundai I40 is the sister car to the Kia Optima, however the optima is slightly longer but the i40 is still 4.74m long and I have been in a kia and hyundai dealership when i was comparing the two cars and they both told me that. They also share many components and same engine and there is no hatch version of a i40 its saloon and estate (tourer). The touchscreen and central stack is clearly inspired by BMW's old dashboard design. I mean just try to angle it more towards the driver and voila you have a BMW dash.

Pi VN I have 2012 Passat and I am thinking about trading in my car for 2017 Optima because I think Optima is miles better in terms of interior, and exterior wise and they also have improved sportness feeling (plenty sporty enough for me)
None of the Optima competitors looks better in or out. Speak your mind about design as your own opinion, but don't tell others what is better as you don't know.

Was that road. noise or a sensitive mic.? That noise is nerve wracking and I am watching this on an iPad, not a proper stereo.
