I'd like to see young truck drivers of today, double-declutching their way through 12 unsynchronised gears... Back in the day, it took me a while to get the hang of it...

No, This F89 doesn't. I see the driver double-declutching when changing gears. A sure sign of a constant-mesh gearbox. Believe me, I know. I've been driving trucks with constant-mesh gearboxes for dozens of years!

No, this Volvo F89 doesn't. I see the driver double-declutching when changing gears, a sure sign of a constant-mesh gearbox. Believe me, I've driven trucks with this type of gearbox for dozens of years. What's more, the Volvo series F88/89 was produced untill 1977 and I very much doubt that synchromesh boxes were available for trucks in those years. I got my first truck with synchromesh gearbox (DAF 95 with a ZF 16 gear-box) about ten years later...

I can tell you it is with synchromesh - it is a SR61 transmission - later on the F10-F12 had the SR62 transmission with minor changes, roller bearings in stead of ball bearings in the SR61

+wkruit1 I have dissasembled repaired and assembled a handfull of this type of transmissions. I know what it is build of. I have been driving the F86 - R51 and F88 - F89 the SR61 all the same generation of transmission. It shifts fine without the double declutching, BUT you can help the shift by doing so, especially in cold weather. If still in doubt then consult your local Volvo dealer or go to : www.oldaussievolvos.com/pdfs/Volvo%20gearboxes%20F86-9%20&%20N.pdf

That driver is not revving up to change down even though he's double clutching, he is lacking in skill. If that was a constant mesh box you would have heard it. Truck syncro boxes have a heavy change especially when cold but double clutching and good rev timing made them light to change. Can't beat a constant mesh box for a light change provided the driver has the skill and a ear for music. Everyone releases the throttle to change up but few rev up to change down except for motor bikes that have constant mesh boxes. The old Volvo's had syncro boxes.

Volvo has always had the best gearboxes. The driver changes gear slowly , no brute power , this is the way to great a gearbox. A sympatic driver !

Clearly, a synchronous transmission F89/88 and later the first F12 got the same. Double clutching mostly comes from the fact that we had learned this in driving school and were used to it. Synced or unsynced doesn't matter. Further, it helped very well in very cold conditions especially further up Northern Europe.
