We all know that scene from the pirate movie, where the Captain raises his spyglass to inspect an approaching ship. The first thing he sees are its colors: the big, fat flag, waving from the stern of the ship or the top of the mast. To the modern audience, flags seem like the best way to identify another ship.
    Things weren't so easy.

When I was in the service, I would always try to trade or take the flags and jacks from the various ships I would be on, but I only managed to get out with the Modern Royal Navy one and the US one because the RoK Navy made me give theirs back

Worked at sea most my adult life till a bad accident I worked in the fishing industry and started from a lowly deckhand till I got my marine motorman license and then first mate and eventually my skipper license. Even after all this time there is maritime law which hasn't changed since the age of piracy . I loved reading the laws and punishment which apparently still today hasn't been changed. No matter what part of the maritime tradition we choose the sea remains the sea and fickle when wanting to be. Even after all these years my heart is still there. I can see why so many left the pirates life just to return the sea calls us back.

Last time I checked, today's Poland hasn't changed it's jack from 17th century. It's still a hand holding a scimitar, but on white&red field, instead of just red, and also within a cavalier cross. You can also see the original flag at 8:18 top left, under "Pologne".

I'll say one thing for 'e me handsome, yer videos get better and better! Which is really nice to see. Generally speaking this video covering the basics of vexillology you have got most of it covered. Pity you didn't go more into the old English / British system of Naval Ensigns covering ships positions within the fleet - which came to cover the different colours of the main part of the flag - (e.g. the White Ensign was worn (Ensigns are Worn, flags are flown; minor differences I know but fairly important in the whole story) by ships of the Vanguard - i.e. the leading Fleet, which came to mean ships of the Royal Navy Only - an interesting story in it's own right). Perhaps that may come in a future episode? Also it should be noted that Pirate Flags / Ensigns where not only BLACK, red was another colour often used!

Love the Edward Davis flag and buccaneer banners in general are just cool, I wonder if James Burney's book has any others in it but I somehow doubt there is, I know it kinda mentions the Pacific Adventure flags but I don't think he even described them despite their designs being known

Even though Destroyermen is science fiction, they did used flags, the lemurians have a variety of decorative flags but viewed the American flag as a symbol of freedom and as a clan flag. The Grik flags are a basic pennant meant for signaling and relaying crude and simple information to another ship, later on they have a flag that is a warped version of the Japanese flag. The Holy Dominion flag still follows the Crimson colored flag like the Spanish Empire of old but with a crooked cross that is a perverted version of their Church and faith. The Empire of New Britain Isles had a Union Jack that is identical to the modern one but with 13 stars and same basic white, blue and red format. The New United States have their own flag design that is somewhat identical to the 1840s flag. The Republic of Real People have a unique German flag that is more stylized. The League of Tripoli has a strange looking flag that has features depending on if their ships are spanish, german, french, or italian. But every faction still uses flag signals if needed.

@@StonerWaifu I was referring to how the Spanish referred to themselves as "Christain." However if you compared the teachings of Christ with the actions of the Spanish they start to look more like Satanists.
Although we are in a time when judging people by their actions instead of their words is considered completely unfair.
