Remember that gerund phrases functions like a noun in a sentence. The gerund has the same functions as nouns do. nouns can be subject, direct object, indirect object, object of a preposition, subject complement, object complement and so on.
Eg. Arguing with the man standing closed to the tree is like climbing Mount Everest.
