      I just dont get WHY people put VERY dirty dishes in a dishwasher. Use a RUBBER SPATULA to remove most of the food into the garbage! The screens etc in a d/w aren't meant to tackle corn and other foods. You have to teach your kids this too! Even the $20. Cascade Platinum Plus has a hard time removing dried on milk in a 16 oz glass!

    Super helpful video! My dishwasher was barely washing dishes and the top spinner wasn't working. Followed your directions...took about 45 mins start to finish and my washer is like new.

    My wife was seconds from buying a new dishwasher online to replace our 15 year old Kenmore that wasn’t washing the top rack. I said give me a few minutes to watch this video, and an hour later, after cleaning the screen as you demonstrated, it’s working and we saved many $$$. Thank you!

  • @jecalvo100

    You probably saved me the cost of a new dishwasher. When dishes weren't getting clean, the appliance repair guy said all we could do was run it with a vinegar rinse and not use as much dishwasher soap. Recently the water stopped spraying on the top rack. So I did a search on these kinds of problems and your video popped up. I didn't realize how simple it would be to clean everything up. There was all kinds of stuff down in the grinder causing it to stop working. The spray arms also had dried food and detergent residue clogging the holes. Thanks so much for the video--I am the hero on Father's Day.

    This worked like a charm! Only side note and it could be our model, but we needed to put all the cleaned parts back in before running it with the vinegar cycle. When we tried running it without the parts, the dishwasher leaked horribly from the bottom. Thinking I shifted something erroneously with the seals causing the leak, we pulled off the front panel to pop off and clean underneath the bottom seal, reassembled the door only to find out it was still leaking. As we were getting ready to order a new dishwasher, on a whim we put all the parts back in, ran the dishwasher and the leaks stopped! Now our dishwasher is even cleaner and working brand new! Thanks again for the detailed video! Model: KitchenAid KUDS35FXSS5

    Just had to thank you. We followed your directions and were lucky that our dishwasher looks exactly like this one. Our filter and grinder were pretty dirty and we cleaned them, but the real issue turned out to be a small hole in the plastic feed tube assembly. We did a temporary repair with duct tape and the dishwasher worked perfectly. We just need to order the part now.

    Absolutely perfect! Cleaned it this morning......superb! Many thanks from Georgia!
    Found multiple fragments of my disintegrating "pull out utensil basket" in the blade compartment....Had my unit for 7 years and wasn't interested in buying a new one which is where I thought I was headed. Money saved, and easy. More importantly, I'm not a "handyman" when it comes to repairs. With that, this one of the easier things I've completed relative to appliance repair. Cheers!

    • @dogwoodtales
      @dogwoodtales  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jody Logan I haven't gotten around to posting the video footage I took of it yet, but the bottom of my utensil tray was also disintegrating. I repaired it using galvanized, hardware cloth from the hardware store. I cut it about double the width, of the tray and folded it over so the ends met in the center. Doing that kept most of the sharp edges from sticking out the sides. Then I tied it in place underneath the tray using plastic zip ties.
      Clipped the tails off the zip ties and used a metal file to smooth over any sharp edges.

    At home with the 2 kids while the husband is at work. Watched your video and felt confident! but then the dishwasher leaked during the vinegar wash. Put everything back- with NO spare parts- and now the control panel is acting up. but it is running. Thanks for the video. the instructions were really clear. And YOU just saved me $200 up here in NJ- that is IF everything goes back to normal.

    Simply amazing! Dishwasher stopped working on Christmas day. I had visions of c-notes flying out of my hands to get it repaired. Instead, found this video, choked my way through the 7 years worth of gunk in the machine, and finished with a dishwasher cleaning as good as it did after it was first installed. The children only learned a few new words during the process :-)

    Thanks for the video, it was a great help. My 10 year old Kitchenaid dishwasher was cleaning very poorly, especially the top rack. Followed the steps you outlined, found almost an inch of lime and debris built up in places under the screen. The chopper mechanism was clogged with toothpicks, thread, garbage, you name it. Took a couple hours to get it apart, cleaned, and back together. Now it works like brand new, amazing!

    Just wanted to let you know I watched your video and went home and repaired my own dishwasher. Got out the Ryobi drill/screwdriver set and a flashlight, pair of hemostats and went to work. The top rack wasn't spinning/cleaning. Figured there was a clog somewhere. I was able to disassemble my Kenmore, clean it (found 2 toothpicks, pecans, piece of plastic, bone, and the food grater part was mesh and full of cat hair), reassemble it and viola! Working dishwasher. Thank you again for your comprehensive and not overly long video. It saved us 400.00 on a new dishwasher.

    Very professional and informative. My husband supervised and I did all the work. It was practice for military deployments and I have to figure out thus stuff alone. The kitchenaid dishwasher in the video is the EXACT same design as a Kenmore elite. We even removed the arm under the top basket and removed a lot of mineral/detergent buildup. We did not use the kids' toothbrushes. ;) Thanks for saving us $150 in service repairs or even $600 on a new machine.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The issue that I was having was very discouraging and I thought that we were going to shell out another $700+ dollars for a dishwasher. Ours is 10 years old and you know a repairman would have cost about $250 and I couldn't see putting out that kind of money for a 10 year old dishwasher. This was not a hard procedure to do if you have a little mechanical ability like me. In fact, it was a lot of fun and very rewarding because my unit is working like new and it didn't cost me a dime! Only problem I had was that I used Krud Kutter in place of the Simple Green spray and it made a lot of suds which foamed out of the bottom when I was testing the unit. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and saving me a lot of money. Thanks again!

    I had already resurrected my dishwasher by simply clearing all the gunk I could see and then, after reading the manual, removing and cleaning the screen, filter, and spinning arms. No tools, folks, so do not be afraid! Some food particles remaining on the top shelf, so came here. Your tip to run water through the spinning arms was brilliant! Found some holes that were not clear though they appeared to be; a twist tie worked better than a toothpick. Mapping the top with some bowls, but I think I am done. Not afraid to dissemble the tubing and the bottom as you demonstrated, however. Thank you for a video that was clear, with excellent info.

    I just followed these instructions on a 14 year old KitchenAid Superba, it had one more screw than on the video, but the instructions worked great. The big clog on mine was the mini disposal was completely blocked. Plus there was a small plastic cap which was probably contributing. I think the cleaning will make the dishwasher work much better.
    Thanks.

I wish I would have come across your video first and your suggestions would have saved me 3 hours of unnecessary work. I loved the way you disassembled the lower spray arm together with the hub. Thanks a ton for posting this video. You're a good teacher with your step by step directions and clear video quality. I did everything you did and I'm just waiting for some super glue to dry to test it out. Even if it doesn't solve the problem in the top rack of the dishwasher, I'm glad I was able to get it clean because it was nasty. What you were saying about the guy who commented that time is money was spot-on. I recently heard someone say that don't think of things in terms of cost but a value. Right now, my time is of less value then the cost of repairing or replacing the dishwasher. So thanks again for posting.

I found half a pistachio shell, a chickpea, and an oval metal clothing tag (??), no wonder it didn't work! I am just running the vinegar cycle and afterwards will re-assemble it which shouldn't take too long. Thank you again for your very helpful video, it was easy to follow! Dishwashers are no longer a mystery to me! It didn't take me very long, it has only been about 40 minutes and I'm just waiting for the dishwasher to finish so I can pop the other pieces back in. PS - love your sense of humour :)

    This may seem corny, but I must compliment you on the best tutorial I think I've ever seen on any subject. Zero sarcasm here. I actually was able to follow along and I am terrible with the stuff!

    Thanks. This worked perfectly. The top spinner was clogged completely with debris and the food grinder was filled with what looked like chia seeds. The dishwasher was installed when I bought the house, so maybe the previous owners ate flax or chia seeds. Saved myself $500-$600 for a new dishwasher.

    Perfect video. I did just as you and could not believe the amount of gunk all over. Took about an hour. Next time probably 1/2 an hour. You saved me a fortune and the dishwasher works just like new.

    Dude, I hope you are still reading your comments. You are the bomb! My top rack for wasn't cleaning, and after much research, I followed your instructions. Success! What sets you apart is your management of the bottom assembly. Everyone else holds the central tap and spins the sprayer arm to undo. Well, that plastic gets brittle over time, and I've had it break off before. It is best to take it off intact the way you do. So for those reading this, this one step is the most important take away. Keep up the great work, and I am grateful!

      +Dogwood Tales (Ray) thanks for the instructions. I followed a similar video however I was not able to get the last piece off but still managed to clean up my dishwasher very good. In the end the top rack is still not getting water so is it safe to assume the last piece must be removed for a successful clean up of the top rack?

      I took the opportunity to take all of the water conduits apart and clean them. Top sprayer arm had build up in it I found. Used CLR, shop vac, brushes and old fashioned hard work. Works like new. So yes, I would break it all down and clean inside and out.

      @dpfrz544 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe I didn't address your question properly. Yes, take off the cover for the chopper. I had debris and calcifications in there too. It may be stuck, use hot water and CLR to loosen it and pry carefully. But don't remove the chopper blade assembly unless you are really good at these things. You should be able to clean thoroughly with chopper blade in place.

      @dogwoodtales  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are referring to the part at 5:55 then yes it has to come off to clean out under it.
      It may also reveal if the chopper is in place. Some have reported their chopper as having fallen off.
      Like dpfrz544 said, don't remove the chopper. I never had to, thankfully, but I think it can get tricky.

    Great video for those who have that kind of filter/grinder system! The manufacturer does not elaborate on how to clean it! I had the same kind before and found myself servicing in this manner every six months. I had, at the time, four kids and a husband all who never scraped enough or rinsed dishes before. This video is great!

    This video worked perfectly. I followed along step-by-step starting with the first rinse test and not a drop of water was in the bowls but the final rinse test - bowls were over flowing with water! Fairly easy to do, saw some pretty gross stuff and it took some time but saved us from buying a new unit. Thanks for posting. Great job :)

    Thank you so much! It took my husband and me about an hour to take apart, clean and put back together the dishwasher. OMG, the sludge in the bottom was pretty disgusting, along with some glass, lots of plastic clip pieces from the top rack adjustable dividers that had broken off. Now it looks almost brand new. Great Video!!!

    We also have a KitchenAid and have had the same problem. We do have very hard water and I found there was a lot of scale and build-up on the parts, but i'm sure the air-soft bb's I found were not helpful either - yes I have children. I followed the video and now it works...better than paying for a service call. Thank you so much!!!

    Thank you very much! Our dishwasher is a Whirlpool very similar to the one you worked on so it made it all the more easier.
    7:46 - 8:07 I keep playing over and over again because it makes me laugh every time. Your comprehensive instructions, easy to understand video, and sense of humor made the repair very enjoyable that I've used zero four-letter words during the process - a feat worth noting. Thank you once again!

    I watched the video, recognized that it was for my dishwasher, followed the video and suggestions and my results were exactly what I hoped for. I don't know how it could be any better. My dishes are clean and I know now how to do it in the future. If I tried to do it myself without this advice/video it would probably have taken all day and the results would not have been nearly as good. Instead, the info about where the clips were, how to remove the parts and where the problem areas would probably show up and many other pieces of advice made it fully worth watching and following. Thanks for a great tutorial.

    Great video! Thanks for your help Dogwood Tales. A little tip of our own - use a shop vac to suck out the big stuff!
    Your instructions were great. We were worried we would need a new dishwasher after the top rack stopped cleaning, However, after cleaning it out as you did - PRESTO! Works like new.

    I searched for a repair video after figuring out how to remove the initial water channel for the top rack, expecting to find clogs or small orifices to clean but finding none. Though a different Kitchen Aid model, I found the machines similar enough to use your instructions with most parts being identical. I never would have started unscrewing the base parts had I not had you there for guidance - thanks! The toughest part was that my food chopper cover did not want to come out, and it looked totally integrated with the large base part underneath it. I almost gave up, but saw by your video that I really wasn't getting anywhere without insisting it come out. I finally was able to pry it loose, and sure enough, it had a bunch of gunk including a piece of plastic blocking the water flow through the screen. I am currently running the vinegar wash load through, then will have to reassemble. Thanks again!

    Thank you!!! You just saved me hundreds of dollars. I was ready to smash my machine and buy a new one.
    Your instructions were super easy to follow and I did it while my husband was sleeping (he works night shift). I found about ten plastic toothpicks in there and other nastiness.
    The machine runs like brand new now. You can hear the improved water flow!

    Thank you so much for this. Real world savings = $450 to 800.
    Had a repair guy come and run a couple simple tests and say "yep, you need a new wash pump motor. This one doesn't have the power anymore." Then saw your video, thought "what do I have to lose" and sure enough it was loaded with gunk down there. Followed the video, cleaned everything out, and ran a load that came out sparkling. One of the clearest how-to videos I've used. Just fantastic.
