70 minutes of fascinating information.
I flew Hueys for 4.5 years way back in 1984-88.
Based in Townsville (35Sqn) for 3.5 years punctuated with 11 months in the MFO (Multi National Observers) … the Peace Keeping force between Egypt and & Israel.
Of all the aircraft I’ve flown (Jumbos, B767. A330, macchi jets, Hercs & more), the Huey has always been my favorite … even though she tried to kill me 6 times !!!
Thank God for the excellent flying training I received in the RAAF.
Thanks for your service James. I also flew (Army) 93-02 and I always remember one my course mates who flew the Huey saying "I Iove her, but she wants me dead" LOL
I'm not a pilot, but I figure that all rotary wing craft are only one glitch away from killing you - kind of like the difference between a car and a motorbike.
I remember going to an airshow at Oakey in the 80's, and seeing the Porters (173 GSS I think), the Nomads and the Kiowas. Wish we had a digital camera then!
@@mattm199 g'day mate, I'd love it if they could bring back an updated 21st century version of the"NOMAD",it was a great aircraft until structural issues stopped it flying.A new strengthened version would be awesome, I'm sad it's gone!✈️🤔
Amazing presentation and a blast from my past. I served in the Army from 1987 to 2002, my first posting was 161 Command and Liaison Squadron in Oakey from 1988 to I 1992 as a Crash Rescue Firefighter (RAE Firefighter). I remember with fondness the Kiowas, Blackhawks, Hueys (Iroquois), Chinooks, Porters and Nomads. I drove P4 Oshkosh Crash Rescue Fire Tenders and attended many PAN and Maydays in that vehicle. I even managed to have the privilege to fly a Porter on an OPSAT flight.
Thank you for presenting more Australian footage!
Fantastic presentation. Scott Downs is a fantastic speaker and presenter.
I really appreciate the mhr 90 explanation. I didn’t know that it was the wrong decision beyond the reliability factors but was fundamentally the wrong design for our needs.
Thank you again.
Exceptional presentation Scott. I'll make the trip out to visit the museum.
I’m about halfway through. This is a brilliant lecture. Kudos the channel and even more kudos to the museum!
BRILLIANT! It brings back memories in the mid 80s as a loadie!
What a shame the CC08 (Caribou) didn't get a mention. It was a fantastic aircraft that joined the dots between the Pilatus and the C130.
The radial engines also sounded great.
One thing not mentioned re the Chinook - how bloody incredibly noisy it was inside. Literally deafening.
Scott Downes - you are in the wrong trade - you did a stunning presentation.
Great history lesson Dags and very well presented, well done old mate!
Nice work Dags! You were a credit to the Corp and are now a brilliant asset and credit to the Museum. Fascinating presentation.
What a wonderful tour. My brother and I are Helicopter fans, (and also tank fans), and you have convinced us to tour. Unbelievably well presented!!
Wow, what a brilliant story teller Scott is, telling it with passion and excellent knowledge, it certainly had me captivated for the whole show 👏👌. Thanks for your service 🤗👍. Also the velvety voice behind the scenes 😌.
What a great video! I live only a stones throw away from the museum but I haven't been there in years. I think I'll make time for another visit. Thanks for the video.

🇦🇺 Thank you, a great video. I learned so much from the Museum Curator, obviously a very knowledgeable man.
Well done to all the team at the museum. Great presentation Scotty.
Excellent production! I’ve been to the museum and read the stories but to hear it all put together is fantastic. Well done
WOW.. So much information in one video. Presented in a way so easy to understand. Thankyou.
Great overview and educational.
Excellent video. Really enjoyed it.
Mate what a great presentation, I just realised it's been over 30 years since we caught up at 5Avn. After seeing this I'll have to make a greater effort to visit sooner than later... Bryan D
Thank you. To my grandfather. To my dad. And to you, for a great well presented vid. Cheers.
Awesome doco, really enjoyed it. Well done to everyone!
Thank you very much for this fascinating delve into the Australian history of military aviation. We are just down the road from Oakey, in Toowoomba & I can't believe we have never been out to have a look at their extensive collection of military machines, which we shall remedy in short order!
Excellent video!
I remember this place when it was just a couple of dusty old hangars. The Bristol Boxkite was without an engine, and the canvas was rotting, and torn where a possum had run along the wings. A local company, run by the widow of an Italian man who migrated to Australia after WWII, resurrected it (the Boxkite) to the standard you see today. That company still has a hangar full of planes at Toowoomba Airport. Worth checking out: The Zuccoli Collection. It's a working place, but has some amazing aircraft to see.
Nice to see that Airport Drive has been renamed to Bawden Boulevard, after Flying Instructor Major Barry Bawden (Ret'd) and his Wife, Helen Bawden OAM, who worked as volunteers at the Museum from those early days, until it reached the professional operation it has become today.
Great tour. Been though the museum myself. Now it means more now I know a lot more. Keep up the good work.
Well done Scotty and thank you for the video Australian Military History.
Brilliant presentation,
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great listen!!!
i live just up the road...will have to get back and investigate further..
Do a tour on RAAFAAHC next - you won't be disappointed, mate. Used to volunteer there. Great people. Truly miss it 🤘
Great video!! I should make time to get to the museum.
Most enjoyable.
Knows his stuff
Excellent... Thank you.
Scott, excellent presentation encompassing a vast amount of knowledge and history that you delivered perfectly. May I humbly suggest that you consider adding just a note on the implications of introducing metal skin, gas turbine engines, glass avionics and weapon systems on our logistic train in particular maintenance. Yours BWMillen
Hats off to Scot Downs for a great presentation!
Awesome
Ross's Vickers Vimy is still under cover at the Adelaide Airport.
My father served in the Australian Army and told me stories of when he flew in blackhawks and Chinooks his unit exercise was cancelled when the blackhawk tragedy happened at high Range Townsville
Point of correction for old mate 53:44 mark. The Huey replacement was down to four aircraft. The Westland Lynx, Super Puma, Blackhawk and another one. The Blackhawk was the winner of that aircraft selection/trial.
I wish he had of been true about that, because he infers that the ADF only looked at the Blackhawk which is a false narrative.
Talking about the original Blackhawks doing flood rescues the sad thing about the new M models is there's no winch that I've seen in photos unless they are on order.🤔
That first aircraft on the beach was not an Auster. Looked like a bird dog. Otherwise great. Thank you. I did my 6 years at Oakey. First in 162 sq. And then Base sq. 1969-1975. Best time of all.
What about GAF NOMAD, did he talk about those? Army had Nomad's at Oakey in the 1980's.
There was a Nomad at the museum but didn't cover it- there were a few other aircraft as well, but I think we were running a bit long on the presentation. Maybe next time.
Notice there was no mention of the Nomad, lot of rumours floating around the Army in the mid 90s about their sudden withdrawal. Unfit for service being the nicest I heard.
@Harldin The bloody tails fell off ,due to fractures heading up from the horizontal stabaliser.
1:10:08 At 24.00 the aircraft depicted is an L5 Stinson, not an Auster Still a great video.
What no mention of Nomad???
Great video - served in an AAAvn Sqn (1980's) - never appreciated the history.
Dude sure sounds like he likes war machines
A lot of this is actually RAAF history...
first
Second
This bloke is a FANTASTIC presenter ! His museum tours must be awesome 👍
@@edwardfletcher7790 can confirm. Very good
I flew with Scott in the Army, he is a legend and an absolute expert on all things Army aviation...and a great mate as well :)
