  • This popular event, called a Prutmarathon, takes place annually in the pretty village of Schermerhorn to the north of Amsterdam. The race is run over a course of about three quarters of a mile. This may sound easy but there is a canal to cross twice first followed by around twenty drainage ditches each of which has a thick layer of silt on the bottom. The competitors are soon totally covered in mud and are hardly distinguishable except by their race number. Five races are run of which three are for different age groups, that is youth, senior and veteran. Youths must complete the course once but seniors and veterans are required to complete three circuits to finish. A particular rule is that all competitors must wear clothing to cover their knees. This video is a compilation extracted from several races.
