If you get your throat moist enough and not drenched in mucus, you can sustain a low growl and even attempt to growl again the same pitch. At least that's what worked for me, most of the time.
There was another video from VOL 1. up on youtube, with a narrator telling us that Kyo isolated himself most of the time when the others were practicing due to his throat not feeling so well. I guess his throat was in pain the tour. It must suck that his career, passion, way to vent or whatever you want to call it is so detrimental to his health.
That could be contributing to it, but there are still plenty of "older" musicians doing well for themselves. Gackt is, 39? I think in Kyo's case, it's because he was never properly trained and probably never warms up his voice. I never understood how he could strain his voice so often but not crack as much as he should. He's a vocal machine
