I’ve been in a huge funk with art for a very long time. Now that school is out I really want to get back to it. I’ll be freshmen next year at MICA and I’ll be a painting major but I haven’t painted/ done any art for myself in a such a long time. Portraits also stress me out too, I’m into realism and I have a few ideas for paintings but my references aren’t giving me a clear picture. Also been getting discouraged with some of the drawings I’ve been doing. I have no idea what subjects I want to do- so I’ve been trying to tap into my emotions for inspo. I’ve also been getting bored really fast with my drawings/ideas and I give up. I really want to jump into painting without drawing first but that’s a bad idea lol
Astrid Sullivan Idk if this will work for you but it works for me but you should try to draw clouds and flowers and then get into drawings that take more time and that need you to be more focused but when drawing flowers try to not look at the reference for to long, i suggest looking at it for 10 sec and then getting back to the painting or sketch. Hope it helps somehow and stay safe and healthy 💕
I guess in a good sense MICA has a lot of foundation classes freshman year so you will constantly be drawing a creating art that it kinda forces you to get back into the swing of things! I graduated MICA last year but for a illustration major, though sophomore year I did want to switch to a painting major because I really enjoyed it. Im not sure if he still teaches there or not but if there is a painting class with Dominic Terlizzi take it!!! Oh my god he was one of my most favorite teachers and so funny, and I improved with oil paint so much in his class.
Honestly the best way to get a clear image of your art to establish something that you are interested in is just working non-stop. If something doesn't work out; start again, give it another twist, let it sit a bit or just leave it behind. For me the best ideas come to mind after a very productive day where I did nothing else but work on art. You're just thinking clearer. And what I would also recommend is having several projects at once. Not only paintings and drawings but other stuff like making a website to showcase your work, making a zine or a book, making prints or just working in mediums that aren't similar to painting and drawing (like collage and video art or something like that). Just always keep working.
When you go in for your freshman/foundation year, you will be building up your skill set and getting the basics of art in general. You really won’t have enough time to be thinking about what you want to do and stuff. It’s alright to not have a plan right now. Instead, focus on improvement and the transition to college life. It’s a big jump from high school! Good luck and I hope for the best for you!

flowers! you can hang flowers upside down while they dry and it will look amazing. gnomes, and small knick-nacks! like little things at a thrift or just around your house. you can hang records on your wall or print out pictures. tea pots, small jars, record player. fill your room with plants, real or fake. white and red and orange are some good base colors. just some ideas 🤍

Hey, i'm from Paris and it's confinement day 11 here. I was exactly in your mood 14 days ago when I understood this shit was inevitable. But I swear, you will get back on your feet and find new habits to work, read etc. Little tips to avoid a supermassive mental breakdown : if you have any window or balcony or garden, and if its sunny, spend maybe one hour in front of it, chillin' or workin'. Open regularly your windows to breath fresch air can also help a lot if its not freezing outside ! Also, try to do some exercice maybe once/twice a week ! I do some meditation to keep me sane, relax and focus on present. I also think its better to keep your sleeping habits if u dont want to spend one week really lost in time and loosing all my energy like me 😂 Also is u want to work, try to keep your matinal routine and get dressed like if u were going outside. Prepare a space outside of your bed (or make your position in your bed different than if u were going to sleep) to keep those spaces appart ! Try to eat normaly, drink lots of water or tea to avoid compulsive eating if ur bored, and eat well or "balanced" (idk the world in english but when your eating the right quantity and the right things etc). Most importantly, be kind and friendly to yourself. We're all in this huge shit together, we can manage it ! We will appreciate our liberty and our loved ones so much more when well be abble to go outside without danger ! Im sorry for my poorly written english, but I was so touched by your comment ! I've been itching for a tattoo and everytime I watch one of your vlogs I get a boost of courage to finally go get one. But I'm so indecisive, idk what my first one should be lol
God its my dream to be a tattoo artist. For my mini thesis I created a flash sheet and then produced temporary tattoos. Then senior year for my professional development class we had to find a working illustrator and my teacher told me about a past alumni who is currently working as a tattoo artist and she was also a illustration major. So I went and interviewed her and it really confirmed my feelings. In september I moved to san francisco for a full time job and was so excited to be around artist I love and get tattoos but in january the whole design team got let go. So now I have to make it to the end of my lease with unemplyment and my tax returns, so I have no money for tattoos. I do plan to propose to my parents when I move back to PA after my lease and I can start an apprenticeship.

tattoos are forever
God its my dream to be a tattoo artist. For my mini thesis I created a flash sheet and then produced temporary tattoos. Then senior year for my professional development class we had to find a working illustrator and my teacher told me about a past alumni who is currently working as a tattoo artist and she was also a illustration major. So I went and interviewed her and it really confirmed my feelings. In september I moved to san francisco for a full time job and was so excited to be around artist I love and get tattoos but in january the whole design team got let go. So now I have to make it to the end of my lease with unemplyment and my tax returns, so I have no money for tattoos. I do plan to propose to my parents when I move back to PA after my lease and I can start an apprenticeship.
