Thank you very much for posting this. It was crystal clear in its presentation of the key characteristics of the 10 species of social wasps, aided by the excellent images. As a believer in the intrinsic value of all natural creatures (except perhaps ticks!) I am often struck how people overreact (in my opinion) when their cream tea or sticky drink attracts a curious common wasp or two. If they reflected on the essential role these animals play in pest control, it might give them pause for thought. It's my impression that wasp numbers have vastly decreased in my lifetime, indeed I rarely see them in my North Cornwall garden, whereas bumble bees and other solitary bees are still reasonably common. Regardless, I think they are striking and attractive insects.
