Chapter 1
The heart of the company
Good morning and welcome to the heart of Vivai Capitanio by Leonardo and Simone Capitanio. We are right here in our botanical garden, the centre of this company, where it all begun and where our passion for the world of plants - especially of the Mediterranean garden - was born and is cultivated. We have decided to start this journey from right here, from inside our garden, to try out a new system that will allow us to reach every one of you and will allow you to appreciate our company and our production without having to take a plane, a car or a train. This difficult time, this 2020 affected by the Covid pandemic, pushed us to invent something different. We have learnt, because of our history, to be not only strong, but also resilient and this is how we came up with a new system.
Each one of you will receive a VR headset at home or at the company. It is a simple tool that will allow you to watch 360-degrees videos. I will explain how it works: just pull out this drawer, from one side, insert your phone in the middle, start the video on TH-cam (or directly from the links that we will send you by email or message) and click the button for the VR display at the bottom right. The image will be automatically placed on two portions of the screen. Once the video starts, reinsert the drawer with the phone into the VR headset and wear it. Simply adjust the lenses with these buttons at the top for a better view and you will be able to watch the videos that will give you the opportunity to virtually dive into our company and our production.
We thought we would do this to bring a new experience, to stimulate us a little bit and also have some fun, try something new. You know, we are young and we like to invent something different. So it is from here, from the botanical garden, that we will start this journey through all the production steps of our company. You will see all the fields where we produce the different product categories, you will see the climbing plants’ nursery, the plant tubs' nursery and the small plants' nursery.
Let's start with the first step: the birth of the plant from the greenhouse for rooting - the start of our production.
Chapter 2
The greenhouse for rooting
We are inside the most important greenhouse, the heart of this company, where all Vivai Capitanio plants were born - the nursery where we do all the cuttings. Simone will tell us something more.
In this greenhouse, every parameter - from humidity to temperature and light - is controlled and is ideal for rooting. The heat is suitable for the roots to come out in this biodegradable paper ball, which helps transpiration. On these little yellow shovels, placed along our corridor, there is a traceability number which tell us the whole history and what will happen to these batches of plants. Apart from fulfilling the traceability obligations set by European regulations, this system ensures and raise the level of quality.
Chapter 3
The cuttings
More than three and a half million plants are produced in our facilities every year - they all come to life at this very table. Most of the plants we make are produced from cuttings. Here, the skilful hands of our employees know exactly what to do with more than 500 different varieties grown here. This is all manual selection work of the material that comes from the mother plants grown in our nurseries and is brought here to be prepared for planting in our paper pots.
Chapter 4
The first transplantation
After rooting, the plants undergo a second cultivation phase when they are manually transplanted from the paper pot to the 7x7cm pot. This is an absolutely necessary phase in which we invest a great deal of energy. We believe that cultivating a young plant in the best way - allowing it to take root better and sprout thanks to initial pruning and trimming - allows us to obtain a product with better quality. We do not normally market the product at this stage, but it is completely necessary for the cultivation itself. Every plant that was born in these greenhouses receives all the necessary care. You can see here a well-rooted plant because it developed its roots in a fresh soil and is now ready to be cultivated in protected environments, or outdoors in other areas of our company.
Chapter 5
The second transplantation
When the plant in the 7cm pot is ready and well rooted, it is repotted in the 17 or 15cm diameter pot and is prepared to go to the growing fields. Most of these operations take place here at the company's headquarters, whilst cultivation takes place in other nurseries located at about three kilometre from here, where we have both greenhouses and outdoor fields.
