Thousand Oaks, CA is dealing with a horrible mass shooting perpetrated by an ex-Marine. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, breaks it down.
    Read more here: www.thedailybe...
"A Marine veteran armed with a handgun opened fire during a college night at a Southern California bar on Wednesday, killing 11 people and a veteran sheriff’s deputy before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.
The gunman, identified by authorities as 28-year-old Ian Long, allegedly shot his way into the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks north of Los Angeles, firing on about 200 people enjoying a country-music night for patrons 18 and older with a .45-caliber handgun outfitted with an extended magazine, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters Thursday morning.
Up to 15 other people suffered minor injuries including scrapes, cuts, and bruises as they fled the bullets, Dean said. At least one other person suffered a gunshot wound."

If he was then again it becomes easier for a shooter when he knows which person is armed. A few honest questions, if I may... This is a country of 325 million people. Do you honestly expect mass violence to never happen? This was in California, with some of the strictest gun laws in the country. What legislation could be passed where the massacre after that wouldn't be met with calls for additional legislation? Yes, I'm a gun owner. No, I'm not a "gun nut." I'm an extremely rare pro gun progressive, so I'm genuinely interested in your opinion.

@@aots66 California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. I'm sure they've saved quite a few lives. Did you notice those lives being saved? I doubt it, because how could you tell? So what is the real tangible measurable goal? Because if we're just talking about "feeling safe" we could lobby the media to stop reporting mass shootings and you'd only hear about the local ones. I'm sure that sounds crazy, right? Because they're a big deal and there have been over 300 mass shootings this year... but how afraid are you of home invasions? Did you know there have been over 250,000 home invasions where a household member was present and became the victim of some level of violence, up to and including death. If you were inundated every other day with stories about home invasion murders, you would probably feel the same way about them as you do about mass shootings. But that's all based on feelings that are easily manipulated. It may not be our jobs, but you are (probably) an intelligent progressive, and not a mindless sheep, or a republican, so it's up to us to figure out a tangible solution that we want and to push our representatives to get it passed. Told my 16 year old daughter of YET ANOTHER mass shooting in the US yesterday and she went off on an epic rant about the stupidity of Americans and Republicans in particular that I should have recorded and stuck on TH-cam. What surprised me most was that she came up with the same points that I've made on here numerous times in the past. So if a 16 year old non-American can see the issues and a 30-year old Republican voter can't, or simply refuses to, then there's a serious issue with education and brainwashing going on in the US. For instance, she called the US Constitution an "outdated piece of paper. Laws change and the world's changed." This is certainly one reason why the UK's unwritten constitution > the United States' written constitution.
The most telling comment was "That's it. I'm done with Americans. I have no sympathy for them." I suspect that the reason for inaction is that Republicans feel the same way. It's become normalised so, if they did care at all before, they certainly don't now. Mass shootings have become as American as apple pie.

We haven't had a mass shooting in the UK for well over a decade. Why, because we don't put gun rights over the lives of the public. Luckily, most of us go our whole lives without ever seeing a real gun. The last mass shooting we had led to massive enquiry and more research on gun violence. If we have a gun lobby most of us don't know who they are or what they do. The idea that someone can buy a gun so easily is insane. I don't even know where you'd buy a gun in the UK. Most people would have no idea. I can't believe so much power is given to the NRA, that you can't do research on reducing gun crime and you act like no research or evidence exists from other countries about the effectiveness of gun control. Nuts. Nuts nuts nuts. If you have a gun you're more likely to be killed with a gun, your own gun in fact.

The USA has 5% of the worlds population, yet in the last 30 years over 80% of the worlds mass and school shootings have occurred in the USA. I would argue that there is something about the USA that makes violence common, I think (I might be wrong) that so far this year something like 12,500 people have been killed in the USA, now your country went to war for the 3000 people who died in the Sept 11 attacks but you are unwilling to do a thing for the 200,000 or so people who have died since then from shootings, I'm not counting the suicides here by the way just violence. It is not just the possession of guns that causes this it is the attitudes of the people. If you look at Switzerland as the next highest 1st world country with high gun ownership (only Yemen has a higher gun per capita figure than the Swiss but below the USA) but Switzerland has not had a mass shooting since 2001 Generally no one in Switzerland would consider or even think about carrying out a mass shooting, it's not just the ownership of firearms, it's the culture, in the USA both gun crime and self defense by gun are common, even regarded as normal, in America it also seems that people sometimes idolize mass murderers and in some way wish to emulate them, but from the rest of the worlds perspective you are just strange.

As an Englishman, I find it astounding that after so many mass shootings that firearms are still legal in the states. In the UK we haven't had a mass shooting since 1996. In 2016 we had 26 homicide victims caused by firearms; the UK has just under 1/4 of the population of the USA, if you think about it that would be like having just over 100 gun homicides in one year for the USA. In 2016 the USA had over 38,000 gun related deaths. I'm not going to lie this definitely puts me off visiting your country.

People keep asking: "what can be done, nothing can be done, nothing could've prevented this" or even worse: "California has strict laws but look it still happened there" The fact is that this guy had mental health issues (Post traumatic stress disorder) but was STILL able to purchase this weapon LEGALLY. So can we admit that background checks are not tough enough...if you are gun owner, you should want tough background checks. If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about. It's that simple. A thorough background check would've prevented this guy from getting his handgun...dont hate, just my opinion.

We're very similar to Americans. I'm saying that if our gun laws were different, we'd be out of control in the same way that our American neighbours are. The difference is in our laws controlling gun acquisition. You're absolutely right regarding the source of the problem. But the sad reality is that greed trumps everything, and guns are a lucrative business. The situation in Canada, indeed all around the world, is getting worse when it comes to guns. Our hearts bleed for you, and for ourselves as well.

Don't start with the car argument. We ask for driver's license. We have legislation to discourage people from commiting crimes. It would be massively stupid to let people drive cars without making sure that they can drive. That's why we shouldn't let people use guns without knowing if the person can/should use it.

alfonso, depending on the state you do. but remember, firearms are a right, driving is a privilage. also, driver licenses are incredibly easy to get, and in states where you have firarm licencing to show that you know the basics of firrearm operations and the safety laws that apply to them, they are as easy as getting a driver licence.

I saw someone on twitter comment that some who were caught up in this mass shooting were also in Nevada when that mass shooting happened. In most countries that would be an amazing statistic, in the US it's just Wednesday.

That’s not far-fetched at all. Thousand Oaks is about 7 minutes from me and the Borderline is a country western bar. So for some of the same people to attend both is very realistic.

@@539-s3e I live in Canada and if a mass shooting happened in one city, it would be something talked about for years if some of those people who were there were then also present for another mass shooting.
Of course, I say I live in Canada so the chances of two mass shootings in such a short time period are nowhere near as high as in the US where you are brainwashed into believing everyone needs to own a gun and no it's not just "everyone has the right" blah blah, it's become so obsessional that it's portrayed as you're something less if you don't want or own a gun.
As an American you're there in the middle of it all and I'm just telling you as an outsider making an observation. It is NOT normal for the same people to be involved in two mass shootings, even if there isn't a huge geographical distance.

America's relationship with gun happen because you spend most of your time as a frontier country when firearms came around. Most countries were already well urbanized and culturally established that being armed in daily public life simply don't make sense, so it was never all that difficult to think in terms of not having guns around. The problem is that you still think in terms of firearms even when you cease being a frontier country ages ago.

Hence why we should have similar mental health sanctions like they have in the UK. Where if you are found to be a harm to yourself or others you are evaluated heavily by multiple psychiatrists then made to seek treatment. After releases from treatment you are monitored by a social worker 2-3 times a week. Watch Barcroft docs on Bedlam on youtube.

If a weapon has no legitimate purpose ban it. Guns are useless as defensive weapons. The attacker is ready, has the element of surprise, has planning and rehearsal. The attacker is a pro. The defender is an amateur.
Stop wishful thinking and heroic fantasies. Stats say a gun in your house increases odds of a family death. Only in the movies do they save lives.
