I'm partial to leather hatbands myself. I have a couple that I rotate between my various hats depending on what boots and belt I'm wearing. I know it wasn't a fashion maxim back then. But, I'm just really OCD about my leathers matching. Thanks for another video, Santee! Enjoyed this one while sitting on the beach. 👍
Ahhhh yes...the first project I undertook after I started wearing a proper cowboy hat. I made a leather 9mm ammo-belt hatband with my awl and used an old belt for the leather. Tent-grade twine for the stitching. Came out perfect!
Thank You so much for this video. This is a real DIY project for Old West decor. I am going to make a custom homemade head band for both of my wide brim hats to show my own unique style. Keep up the Great Work. Stay safe.
When I was younger my hat band was just a plain bandana rolled up and tied. Gave my hat a bit of decoration and gave me an emergency bandana if I ever needed it.
I've done that too. In severe heat I'll drape the bandanna around the back and sides, a la foreign legion. It looks silly, but I'm the one who is laughing on the inside, because the comfort is it's own reward.
good morning Santee :) for mine as i was a shepherd and worked in shearing sheds. ,i had different ear tags from heaps of different farms memories of my time in the Australian outback :)
I love your rattlesnake hat band. We don’t have rattlers here, but we do have crocodiles and I’ve seen many variations using croc skin over the years. Some classy, some outlandish. 😂
Certain TH-camrs can get away with short videos. Unfortunately, I could watch yours for hours!!! Keep up the great vids!!! I just wish they were longer!!!
First thing I do when I get a new hat, off goes the ribbon and on goes a new hat band, I like beaded bands lately, use to put “Calvary Cord” (different colors). I still have some with custom cords, there leather cords with “45 Colt” shells on the ends instead of the “acorns”. 🤙🏼❤️🤠
I agree with you the band of the hat should be what you make it to be playing or however you want it. I really like the detail that goes into some of the bands of the head looking back on some of the characters I mean they really did detail on their hat so that tells you about the person. Thanks for sharing this great video 🤠🌵
I made a band for one of my hats out of 1" wide Native American beadwork. I fastened it with leather strips in the back and finished it off with 1" long bone bead tassels.
It has also a function. I use a cowboy hat everyday for farm work and if your interior head liner becomes rags (mine was ripped off by my dog) the hat becomes a little bit loosen. Tightening the head strap makes it fit. Note that today people buy a new or repair the liner, but in old days, poor cowboys didn't had it so easy
Went horse hair on my felt Stetson, and leather on the straw. I REALLY like that rattlesnake band your friend made you! Might have to hunt one of those up for myself! BTW, Happy Birthday! (Good to see the Marshall let you out on good behavior! 😜)
I like the rattlesnake hat band. It lets people know you're coming, and not to be messed with. An added benefit is that you might even get the nickname "Rattlesnake". How cool is that?! 🤠
Very cool! We have a fellow out here named "Arizona Dude" who shows up at events with an Arizona state flag hatband. Inceidentally, his shirt is also the flag.
Thank you Santee for the great ideas, I have two hats that need new bands. I can't figure out how I wore out the bands and not the hats. Good luck with training that horse.
Thanks Santee for showing us how to spruce up our western hats. I have been getting into the leather workings and found the suggestions very simple but interesting. Just need to find a 4 foot rattlesnake... lol. 🐍
Arizona Ghostriders - Once again another great video, thanks. I have found a hat band can also add a bit of weight to a hat to help keep it in place. In high winds a chin strap or a tether is needed, but walking around with your hat tied down all the time makes you look insecure. "What you got under your hat there stranger, your life's savings?" "No, just my imaginary friend."
Love the hat band that you made. I read or saw somewhere that hat bands were also used to tighten the hat on your head. If the hat was to small, you would wet it and jam it on your head and let it dry. If to big, cinch the hat band until the hat fits. Unfortunately I can't remember where I saw that information.
Oh how much I loved to watch your show this Saturday evening. You made the funniest entrance which again I loved to watch (you look adorable). Best episode on hatbands .Can you do one on wrist bands ? ( or have you made one already ) Santee , thank you very much for your show. Next show I'd like to see you make another likeable entrance. Nicely done. I made a leather band stitched with beads. Currently it sits on a nice felt hat that came with a really cheap looking braided band with aluminum fittings.
Sweet tutorial, Santee. I like leather too. 1:43 ~ _"Not like that."_ Yeah, have to agree with you. Maybe I shouldn't mention that I *literally* a few short hours ago unboxed two leather half-masks, and two leather wrist gauntlets from two different companies. I cut some strips of black leather and burn my designs and brand into them with a soldering iron and then I poke holes on both ends. Next I will take some thin rope and dye it black and then burn and knot both ends of it. I run it through the holes I poke into the leather and use them to tighten the band around the hat and then I will knot them and let them hang slightly off the back of the hat like tassels. I have also done basic ribbons. I want to do something with rawhide.

I knew a guy who had barbed wire wrapped around his hat as a hat band.
Ouch if you ever hit your head on a beam
THATS SO HEAVY METAL IMMA DO IT
Guess he was a metal head? *badum tiss*

A bit ironic if he was a cowboy. Barbed wire put a lot of them out of work at the turn of the century
