Been using this exact monitor with my deck with a mechanical keyboard, mouse and headset all on the USBs on the dock station. It’s very nice to switch between browsing videos and gaming at hotels on desktop mode.
Easily. It's not going to adjust the refresh rate of the monitor; it'll still run at 144Hz. But a docked Steam Deck at 40Hz/40fps cap should work just fine. I personally haven't tested it, but I don't see it being an issue.
@@minoxiis3419 Yeh I was waiting on the vid to see how it can be done.. another poor vid the title is literally "This Portable Monitor Unleashed My Steam Deck" Poor from the presenter.
IT can do 120hz 1080p on xbox. On the Xbox go to settings -> Video fidelity and overscan -> change overrides to HDMI -> you can then change the refresh rate to 120hz. I did this and it worked. Played THPS 1+2 at 120fps
I think the issue might've been not enough power on the monitor when running the Series S. You were running the monitor on wall powet on the Deck but not on the Series S.
My 60hz one arrived today, just in time for visiting family at the holidays, got the steamdeck, dock, bluetooth mouse and keyboard and Season of Discovery Classic wow :)

i'm thinking of buying this monitor for my steam deck. but i have a question: my goal is to use the monitor alongside the dock for easy portability. so i'm wondering if i have the steam deck plugged into the power via the dock, and the screen plugged into the dock through hdmi, would i still need to power the screen via the power adapter or will it receive the power through the hdmi cable? alternatively, would using the usb c to a cable from the screen to the dock provide the power if the hdmi doesn't? i'm trying to think of utility here as i do need at least 2 of the usb slots on my dock available at all times (i take the deck to fighting game locals and need both usb slots to be available for wired controllers like mine)
Good question. Let's say you have the Steam Deck Docked and the AC adapter is plugged into the dock. If you only connect the HDMI cable to the dock, then there won't be a video signal or power going to the monitor. If you plug in only the USB C to A from the dock to the monitor, then you won't get a video feed. The only way I've seen it work is buy using both. You need to plug in both the HDMI and the USB C to A into the dock order for the monitor to work. You'll still have two USB ports available for use on the dock if you're using the Valve one. I haven't tested any other docks. If I know anything about fighting games, it's that they're usually locked at 60 fps, so you should be good with a 60hz monitor. That is, unless you want to go for 144hz for other games.
@@baldlyrudy thanks, this answered my question! i am using the official dock so that saves me trouble with any compatibility issues. the goal is to have the refresh rate at 60hz for fighting games as you said. 1ms response time is primarily what i'm looking for as it's a competitive setting and we need the least amount of latency on inputs, and no visual artefacts like ghost trails from character movement. of course i need a portable monitor to carry with me to the meetups so that people can play with a bigger image than the deck's screen. higher refresh rates are honestly just a big bonus as far as i'm concerned for indie games that i play. and i intend on using it as a second screen for my laptop when i'm not using the deck. thanks for replying so fast, your review covered just about everything i wondered about this product, it looks like exactly what i'm looking for at a decent price range, i just need to confirm if the RT is 1ms or not.
actually, i have a second question since i've seen reviews that say you can connect the screen to power and then connect it to your deck/switch. i'm wondering if it's possible to connect the deck's charger to the screen in one of the usb c ports (C to C), connect the screen to the dock through the other (C to A), and dock the deck regularly in that contraption. would that provide power to the screen and the deck as it would without the dock being in the middlev like the switch does? if it works this way, you only use one power adapter and power both the monitor and the device, plus you might not even need the hdmi cable in this case. but i guess that depends on what the dock can do in terms of transmitting signals and charge. note you don't have to try this out for me if you haven't, i don't wanna risk your devices nor mine in case that causes a short circuit or something lol
Why is the monitor plugged in to power (both USB-Cs in use, not talking about HDMI+USBC power) throughout the review in the B-roll? Sure, you talk about it running off the single USB-C, but one of the entire points of this is that is seamlessly powers off the device you're outputting from.
I built an expensive ass Velka 7 5.9 ltr SFFPC to keep in my backpack hand luggage for traveling but even that was a pain at the security gates to be stopped and explain every time. The steam deck is game changer, now I've switched back to a still small but sizable and easy to upgrade tower for home. And steam deck with portable monitor for traveling. So much easier.
My thoughts exactly. It's so much easier to bring the Steam Deck along, and having a portable monitor is a great option for playing games while traveling.

The case is nice but the stand is too flimsy if using outdoors (I like to unwind with switch evening outdoors after a long day at work/home office). As others have mentioned the hdr setting is garbage but standard color is decent enough for switch gaming. This monitor might be better for permanent desk/occasionally using it on the go. In conclusion this model sits at an odd middle ground for me, where I would want to spend more that meets my checklist, or to spend less for budget friendly lighter switch gaming. Might try out the cheaper 14” slim model or extra for a more robust portable game monitor such as better built in stand and better connections. For those who just need it for desk or light gaming or don’t care about hdr colors it’s a great monitor for the price. The thing for me is that it’s hard to go from the switch’s nice Oled screen to a larger non Oled monitor. Because then I would just feel like hooking up to my l2 c2 tv which would defeat the purpose. Hope this helps others deciding.
Thanks for your video! Could you maybe help making this thing work with my specific setup? I'm wondering about how you can use the Monitor with a Docking Station (I'm using the ivoler one with 3 USB, 1 USB-c and 1 HDMI port). Is it possible to use the docking station for connecting keyboard and mouse and connecting the monitor via USB-c port, while charging the steam deck with the monitor's charger? It was said in the video that the USB-c can also give power to the deck. Just wondering if I'd need to reconfigure my whole setup
Hey there! If I remember correctly, the cable and adapter that come with the monitor aren't strong enough to power both the monitor and provide a charge for the Steam Deck. If you want to use the Steam Deck using the iVoler dock and the monitor, then you'll have to use the adapter for the monitor. Now, you might be able to get enough juice from the dock itself. IIRC, you need 15w to power the monitor, so you should be fine with it being plugged right into one of the USB ports on the dock. I'd need to test that exact scenario myself to tell you for sure.
@@baldlyrudy thanks for your answer. I've done a lot of research on this problem and came to the conclusion, that I pretty surely won't be able to use the monitor as I intended. It was recommended to me to use a hub with power delivery, two USB c ports and two USB a ports instead of my docking station so I could connect the monitor and the steam deck to it while charging the whole setup. But today I saw that most of the usb c hubs don't support Video output. So my next idea is to keep using my docking station with my 1 usb c and 1 HDMI port, use the one usb c port for charging with the deck's charger and use an HDMI to Mini-HDMI to transmit video signal to the monitor. I think I'll have to charge the monitor separately as well, but this I think would be my best (and definitely most affordable) option. Do you think this is going to work out?
@baldlyrudy ohh ok because I'm trying to find a portable monitor for a little road trip that I can just hook the switch up it would just power on the monitor
Ah. Gotcha. Just tested it out. The monitor registers the Switch as a power source, but the Nintendo Switch doesn't register the monitor as a video output device.
Go to the game, properties, general, game resolution to force a specific resolution. I haven't had to do that myself, but I do know sometimes software likes to be weird. Might be a game that just doesn't default to the output resolution that's detected. At this point I just keep it on default.
Salut j'ai un moniteur portable Asus ZenScreen MB16ACV mais j'arrive pas à me connecter sur mon support Steam deck ☹️ car mon moniteur ne possède qu'une sortie de câble USB C . pouvez vous m'aider ?
Agreed, but this is a portable monitor. I'm not sure why you'd want to play on a PS5 with it; I consider the console a stationary one. The Series S is understandable. Even so, I want portability from it and not something stationary and permanent.
Yo. What I want is steamdeck + usb-pd charger + usb-c hub + 1 x usb-c portable monitor. I want all of this to run while connected to the single pd charger, connected to the hub -> suplying power to the steam deck and portable monitor (on usb-c). Recommendation for the hub? wondering if a hub for the macbook would work well for this?
I have a steam deck and the Viewsonic 17” all run through a JSaux hub and it’s powered by the steam deck charger. The hub then powers the deck and the screen. It works great. I even have a USB dongle and wireless keyboard and mouse I use.
I clicked to say this looked dumb but it actually looks kind of cool. I wonder where you’d use this though cause doesn’t pretty much anywhere you’d stay have a tv? Maybe for camping.
Im working at a small car lot and it’s slow most of the time so I kill time remote playing my Xbox but I want to have a bigger screen to cast my phone, this seems just right for me :)
Using the HDMI to Mini HDMI through a Steamdeck dock did not work for me (on my main TV HMDI on the dock works fine). I did not try connecting with usb-c, becuase I want the ethernet and USB ports of the dock so I can have keyboard/mouse etc connected while in desktop mode.
If you have the AC Adapter plugged into the monitor and the USB-C connected from the monitor to the Steam Deck, then you'll get a charge. But, it'll be a slow charge. I haven't tried it with the adapter that came with the Steam Deck, because I'm afraid to short circuit the monitor. 😅
@@zoom0451 The monitor comes with a 15w AC Adapter, so off the top of my head I'd say no. It'll be a slow drain if you use the AC Adapter that came with the monitor. I pretty much said screw it and tried plugging in the adapter that came with the Steam Deck into the monitor and then running a USB-C cable from the monitor to the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck gets enough power through that set up to make it have a steady charge and turns out to be a net positive on charging the battery. I'm currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn, 1920x1080, ~58fps while testing this. I don't have RDR2 on Steam.
@jackbundred I was thinking of buying it for my PS5 but what Baldyrudy said in the video about the screen not being recognized as a capable 120 hz monitor for consoles was a deal breaker for me. So... you're positive that if I buy this monitor and play around with the settings as you mentioned, I will be able to get that 120 hz for PS5?
As soon as he said “sponsor” I said nah. I don’t trust the review. Update: after I finished watching the review… I’m not sure. I feel like he’s being honest. I’m looking for a portable monitor for my switch. I have no space on my current desk setup for a new monitor, so I thought maybe a portable monitor. At least that way I can move it around & also use it for traveling. I prefer using dock mode with the pro controller & a monitor. I might just give this a try.
Yeah. I get where you're coming from with the "sponsored" bit. I travel a lot for work, so having something like this works for me, personally. It's pretty solid for the Switch, but I noticed something after posting the video that I should mention here. The resolution when the Switch is connected directly to the monitor seems to be 720p. When I plug in the Switch while docked, it looks like 1080p. That might be a deal breaker for some. Lugging around a Switch dock sucks when traveling, IMO.
@@baldlyrudy right on, thanks for letting me know. I’m still going to try it out. Especially for the price. Btw, whether I like it or not, your credibility has gone through the roof for me.
I'd never even bother to bring a monitor if I travel. The handhelds already come with a screen which is more than enough. Steam deck can't even play most modern games (aside from indies) above 40fps anyway so 144hz monitor for it is pretty much a waste of money
It very well could be a waste of money for you. I normally travel for weeks at a time for work. For me, it's versatility. I'd have a second monitor for work as well as a gaming monitor for my SD or Switch. Being able to have a better gaming experience on the go is awesome for me. I've been playing more indie and AA titles lately. The Steam Deck doesn't have any issues hitting 144 fps on any of those. I personally don't care to play big AAA on the SD.

@jeb4373 for sure that'll work. Also, you can see if you can get a USB-A to USB-C cable and connect it straight to the dock for powering the monitor.
I can’t seem to activate 144hz with my Steamdeck. On settings it says 60hz and I can’t change it, in-game it won’t go past 60hz.. any tips?
When you connect the switch did you have to power the monitor separately or did. The switch power on the monitor
The monitor was powered by the adapter that came with it.
How did you fix the resolution with steamdeck? Gui shows fullscreen while games only show center not fullscreen
Go to the game, properties, general, game resolution to force a specific resolution. I haven't had to do that myself, but I do know sometimes software likes to be weird. Might be a game that just doesn't default to the output resolution that's detected. At this point I just keep it on default.
@@baldlyrudy its with cs2
@cookiekesgameplace2508 then go to the properties and force the resolution. 👍
Thanks for the info 👍 great video

Salut j'ai un moniteur portable Asus ZenScreen MB16ACV mais j'arrive pas à me connecter sur mon support Steam deck ☹️ car mon moniteur ne possède qu'une sortie de câble USB C . pouvez vous m'aider ?
On Xbox seris SX go to settings. Set 8bir color space. And Xbox will see thar youre monitor 120hz capable.
i bought the nomad 16 ulra oled monitor from prims+ i can say that this thing is epic with the steam deck no need to upgade to the steam deck oled lol
How and can you get 30w for a Rog Ally on this monitor?
The fact that the monitor is not recognized as a capable 120 hz for PS5 and Xbox is a total deal breaker I think.
Agreed, but this is a portable monitor. I'm not sure why you'd want to play on a PS5 with it; I consider the console a stationary one. The Series S is understandable. Even so, I want portability from it and not something stationary and permanent.
changing display override to hdmi might help

What monitor stand are you using?
Hey! Sorry I missed this comment. Here's an affiliate link to the stand in the video: amzn.to/45D3Nti
Can i still use the dock for switch while using this?
Yes.
Does this work with samsung dex?
I clicked to say this looked dumb but it actually looks kind of cool. I wonder where you’d use this though cause doesn’t pretty much anywhere you’d stay have a tv? Maybe for camping.
Yeah dude. When they reached out I was like, ".....ok. Sure. I'll check it out." I was really impressed by the quality for the price.
@@baldlyrudy Do you think I could power it with a car outlet along with my Xbox?
Oh heck yeah. As long as you have something that has a large enough output that can support the AC adapter.
Im working at a small car lot and it’s slow most of the time so I kill time remote playing my Xbox but I want to have a bigger screen to cast my phone, this seems just right for me :)
Does the USB-C support display?
Yes. That's how I connected it with when I was testing the Nintendo Switch. 06:43
@@baldlyrudy Ah I see! I guess it works like a DP (Display Port), ain't it?
Using the HDMI to Mini HDMI through a Steamdeck dock did not work for me (on my main TV HMDI on the dock works fine). I did not try connecting with usb-c, becuase I want the ethernet and USB ports of the dock so I can have keyboard/mouse etc connected while in desktop mode.
Was it the official Steam Deck Dock or a third party dock?
@@baldlyrudy third partry, Ivoler, but i fixed it. Power issue, used power adapter instead of USB port on surge protector.
That's good! Glad it all got worked out.
Does it charge the deck when plugged in?
If you have the AC Adapter plugged into the monitor and the USB-C connected from the monitor to the Steam Deck, then you'll get a charge. But, it'll be a slow charge. I haven't tried it with the adapter that came with the Steam Deck, because I'm afraid to short circuit the monitor. 😅
@@baldlyrudy Do you know if it will still charge on something like RDR2 or at least maintain a consistent battery life
@@zoom0451 The monitor comes with a 15w AC Adapter, so off the top of my head I'd say no.
@@baldlyrudy Thank you 👍
You're welcome. Hope it goes well. 👍
I think you need hdmi 2.1 input for 120hz support on xbox/ps5
At 1080? I thought HDMI 2.1 was needed for 120Hz at 4K.
Nice! Thanks for that. I didn't see that at all.
Hey, may need to update the link it takes me to a 60hz screen..

@@Jay_Hova420 nice! Enjoy! It's helped me a lot when I travel for work.
Thanks dude. Much appreciated. Let me know how it goes.
@@baldlyrudy will do👍
It's probably not reaching 120frames because you're using the Xbox as a power source.. plug it in the wall ya may get different results

Dow sit have vrr?
