    Thank you for this video!!! My bioactive enclosures don't have them, but my bioactive roach/cricket bins used to be full of them... Something that I've found also helps with controlling the adults are those yellow sticky traps that you hang. I leave them close to the bins and they helped a lot, but not 100%, it's more damage control as you said. Do you know if the mosquito bits affect other insects? I've heard about it but I'm afraid it'd wipe out the isopods, springtails, or even my precious roaches... lol!
    Also, what a beautiful Tokay! I'm also a Tokay owner and they're easily my favorite reptille.

      Thank you for watching, I’m glad the vid was helpful!! I tried the yellow traps as well but I didn’t have much success at all, I think I should have placed them closer to the enclosures. I’ve read that it’s harmless to isopods and springtails, and in my experience that seems to be the case as well!
      And yes, tokays are amazing :’) I live in Florida so I would catch and release all the time haha

    get rid of the cause of fungus gnats, which is moist shredded wood or pine bark. indoor plant keepers believe fungus gnats are unavoidable, but since switching to non pine bark media (coir or peat + perlite) i've had zero fungus gnats on indoor plants. maybe you can make a similar adjustment, that gets rid of the cause, rather than treating the problem. cheers

      I don't have either of those in my enclosures. I use BioDude terra Aranea su substrate and started pothos in some enclosures and now have them. So, idk where mine came from then.

      @@calliew311 : they're tiny little flies that are basically everywhere, in small numbers, and so tiny you dont see them normally. they readily get into the house. they love and breed in decaying organic matter that is very wet and that goes sour (acidic), which is why they're also called vinegar flies. they're a constant nuisance for indoor plants, when you have suitable media that retains moisture too much and goes sour. for your application (not my hobby) i would suggest using non-organic media where it gets really wet, and organic based media only where it's truly needed and hopefully in a way such that it can readily drain. for indoor plants it's been just a matter of changing from bark based media to coir, which both drains much better and also does not rot quickly, for those sour conditions to develop. sour rotting media has a putrid sulfide smell.
      hope this helps you a little to work it out.

      @@Chris-op7yt I get that, but I live in northern Nevada. And I only have 1 pothos plant that I have cut/split and placed in water to get roots to be able to plant in my spider enclosures. 1 live plant in my entire house, lol. Granted, it's the first time I've ever put live plants into my BioDude, and I do run a humidifier, but the avg humidity in my living room with the humidifier running 24/7 is between 45 and 51%. So, idk how any of my enclosures got so wet that these things hatched. I did buy 1 bag of substrate from Tarantula Cribs, and I used it for my isopods, and saw some of the larvae of the fungus gnats, I was afraid my isopods were too dry, so I know I over soaked them and had leaf litter, and the stuff you mentioned that causes them and feeds them. Well, I threw that substrate out, and started over with BioDude, and cut way back on the watering. I rarely water or spritz my T enclosures.
      Idk how they are still surviving. I have one of those Katchy devices with the light. And I don't have a shit ton of those flies, but enough that it bothers me. Like every other week my sticky thing in the device will have 40 dead flies. And every few days in 2 of my enclosures I'll see 2 to 5 flies. I just don't want them to get out of hand. But if I dry out those 2 enclosures, maybe the flies won't be able to breed and reproduce, or the larvae will die due to lack of moisture? If not, is it safe to use the method in this video, what's your opinion? Or would that kill my spiders? Or do you even know?

    • @Chris-op7yt
      @Chris-op7yt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@calliew311 : you could try sprinkling some garden lime over the growing medium/roots, which in small doses is good to plant and neutralizes the acidic conditions these fly love, and should be totally safe to spiders.
      i havent tried the method in this video and found it by randomly stumbling onto it, as fungus gnats are also indoor plants problem....or only breed spiders that eat fungus gnats ;)
      these nature lookalike immitation setups for all kinds of small pets may be more trouble than people bargain for. definitely not required by these types of pets.

    Do you reccommend doing this as soon as you make the substrate? I went bioactive last year and never had this problem until the past two months? I saw a video where a man just used boiling hot water in the peat moss

    • @ravishingreptiles
      @ravishingreptiles  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Boiling helps but the gnats will eventually be drawn to the soil. I always add mosquito bits as soon as I make the substrate! Works great as a preventative, you shouldn’t have issues for a few months
