    Sooo traditionally/commonly, the layers to halo halo is in this order:
    all ingredients at the bottom
    add a bit of condensed milk or sugar
    add in the shaved ice
    pour in the evaporated milk (make sure the ice is well coated but not flooded)
    add the scoop of ube ice cream and slice of leche flan on top for the finale
    some of the ingredients we normally put thay you didn’t have are gulaman (grass jelly), pinipig (puffed rice crispies, sweetened corn kernels, and sweetened saba banana (boil the sliced saba in water and sugar until it becomes syrupy)

    The way we do it in the Philippines, put all the toppings on the bottom. Nata de coco, kaong jelly, munggo beans, white beans, tapioca, jack fruit. Then you put the shaved ice, EVAPORATED milk, ube jam and leche flan. Ice cream is optional but if you’re gonna put it get some ube flavored ice cream or vanilla. Topped it with toasted pinipig (rice krispies). You should try making home made leche flan. Its so easy to make.

    Literally, halo- halo means “mix- mix”, but it actually means “a mix or combination of.” So there’s halo-halo na gulay (mixed veggies) halo-halo na musika (a combo or blend of music) halo- halo na minatamis (a mix of sweets) which was shortened to “𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐨-𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐨”.

    The legit halo halo would be putting first all the ingredients at the bottom then you add Shaved ice, add few strips of jackfruit as it will over power the flavour if its too much, then add the rest of the toppings like leche flan, ice cream on top sprinkled with pinipig/ pop rice and lastly a good amount of evaporated milk not condensed milk as the rest of the ingredients were already sweet enough especially the ice cream.
    But great job benji 😊

    Since you’ve never made it before you should’ve googled it, then make it. Now you know for next time sometimes it’s better to follow a recipe the first time and then once you’ve got it down you can add your own spin on it. Good learning moment to not just jump right in. Think that’s why Judy was giving you a hard time, sounds like she was giving you a taste of what you do to her lol.

  • @ririgraceee
    @ririgraceee 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Hi Benji! You can try other variations, like mais con yelo or saba con yelo. I usually put 2 types in mais con yelo. I put corn kernels and cream of corn at the bottom, then condensed milk then ice and top it with frosted flakes. After that pour the evaporated milk and mix it all. The cream of corn adds so much flavor.
    For the saba con yelo, we just use a sweetened saba. Perfect for summer! 😊
    I suggest use a tall glass so you have more room for the ingredients and ice. ☺️

    Next time you make halo halo use a bowl. A lot easier to mix-mix. Lol. Some mix the evaporated milk and condensed milk together, just adjust for sweetness. If not straight evaporated milk. Now I want to make some too!

    You can add yema, which is made from condensed milk. Not a traditional way to cook yema, but the easiest way is to boil the can of condensed milk for a certain time. Some vendors in the PH add yema for sweetness. We use evaporated milk (A LOT lol)
    I prefer sweetened red beans (adzuki/azuki in Japanese); it adds characteristics to the flavor. Usually, they add a sweet plantain (saba-banana) to your halo-halo. For a little extra work, you can make your own leche flan, but we usually buy it in a store or restaurants. We also add gulaman; buy a sachet with buko pandan flavor to make it at home.
    Judy is right; there is no rule when it comes to halo-halo ingredients. It's your preference. You can try the other versions such as mais con yelo (just sweet corn with corn flakes), saging con yelo (sweet plantain only), crema de leche (sweet plantain, macapuno, and leche flan).
    Well, the only rule is you must mix everything before you eat the halo-halo. Thank you, Benji, for sharing/introducing to your kids some of Filipino cuisines. I am always amazed by your effort to do your own research and buy the ingredients for making Filipino food.

  • @tatty522
    @tatty522 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    kuya Benji, evaporated milk is the right milk for halo halo rather than condensed milk. To sweeten it, you can put a little of regular sugar. You can buy that evaporated milk in the filipino store that you go to.

  • @alyxia20
    @alyxia20 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    we do have ice shaver at home, its electric, tho its not common to have it every households unless u do halo-halo business. but sometimes some households have manual ice shaver.
    tip: use evaporator milk. for the sweetener, u can use the syrup of the canned fruits. less ice cream too to not overpower the flavors (as what judy said)
    theres actually nothing right or wrong in making halo-halo coz its subjective. we did have halo-halo business every summer and people would ask to not put this or that because thats how they like it. good job on ur first halo-halo! 🎉

    Preferably evap milk because the preserved sweets are already too sweet. Condensed milk is too rich, it overpowers the different flavors of the preserved sweets which BTW are not called “toppings” as Judy calls them, because they are traditionally placed at the bottom of the glass. Shaved ice goes on top of the sweets, followed by milk. The actual “toppings” are either leche flan or ube ice cream.

Serves its name “halo halo”. 😊 And no one said how each ingredient should be put, right? I think we were just used to seeing those ones being sold in the market or restaurants which ingredients are being put in a specific order for it to be appealing to their customers. Nevertheless, this looks so appetizing and delicious!!!! 😍🤤 And that’s perfect for a warm Seattle weather!

    "Halo Halo is supposed to be a happy drink" yet Judy seemed grouchy and mean to you in this video. It's not condensed milk. It should be evaporated milk but then she never made one. Mama did.

      I agree. I feel for Benji. You could tell she’s just a mean person. Always crying and for what! It’s getting to be so difficult to watch.

      It is best to use evaporated milk or fresh milk or half & half not condensed. But not so bad for the first time making halo-halo. Also the best option for ice cream for a topping should be either ube or vanilla. As for mais con yelo, best to topped it with frosted flakes too and a lot of milk 😉😊

      @@al2912aeAgree, poor Benji after all the effort he put in to hear Judy being such a critic is just too much.

      She wasn’t grouchy at all, benji should’ve looked up the recipe or how he likes to say “google it”. Why go in acting like a know it all if he’s never made it? and then saying he doesn’t know what he’s doing? Why is he posting the video in the first place? Oh that’s right because he’s a know it all and Judy was correcting him, it’s good for benji to be told he’s not doing something right for a change usually it’s nonstop ass kissing from Judy.
